There is no single official Pokémon card price. A marketplace may show a recent-sales average, the lowest current listing, the last completed sale, or a guide estimate. Those figures can all be accurate while differing because they describe different transactions, card conditions, currencies, regions, shipping charges and time periods.
To estimate what a card is worth, identify the exact printing, match raw condition or grading status, separate completed sales from active asking prices, and compare delivered totals from several recent, relevant transactions. Treat the result as a defensible range rather than a guaranteed number.
Why the same Pokémon card has different prices
Secondary-market prices are created by buyers and sellers, not set by The Pokémon Company. Pokémon Company International says it does not track resale values or maintain a list of pricing sources. Its guidance is explicit: “The secondary market value of an item is determined by the wants and needs of the Pokémon community, not by our company.”

That means two marketplaces can report different figures without either one being automatically wrong. One may summarize many sales, another may show a seller’s current asking price, and a third may record one unusually high or low transaction. Before comparing numbers, determine what each number represents.

Price labels answer different questions

TCGplayer defines these measures separately. Its Market Price averages recent sales for a particular product and condition; Lowest Listing uses the lowest combined price and shipping among live listings; and Last Sold Listing reports the price plus shipping from the latest completed transaction. Comparing those labels as though they were interchangeable creates a false disagreement.
Confirm that listings are the same product
A card name alone is not enough. Pokémon sets often contain reprints, alternate artwork, parallel foils, promotional versions, language variants and different collector numbers. A listing can look nearly identical while representing a different product with a different supply and demand profile.
Record the identifying details
- Set name and set symbol.
- Collector number, including any “/” total shown on the card.
- Exact printing or variant, such as a reverse-holo, holo, parallel, promo or alternate-art version.
- Language and, where relevant, regional release.
- Whether the card is raw (ungraded) or encapsulated by a grading company.
Search using all of those details. Do not substitute another printing simply because the character, attack or card name is the same.

Condition is a product attribute, not a minor note. Two raw copies of the same printing may have different values because of whitening on edges, scratches in the foil, dents, bends, surface marks, corner wear, stains or manufacturing defects.

Raw condition categories
TCGplayer’s condition system runs from Near Mint through Lightly Played, Moderately Played, Heavily Played and Damaged. The descriptions consider the number and extent of visible imperfections, wear and damage. TCGplayer does not sell cards under “Mint” or “Gem Mint” condition labels, so a seller using those terms elsewhere is not using an equivalent platform category.

When checking a raw card, compare photographs of the front, back, corners and reflective surface. A seller’s “excellent” or “clean” wording is not a standardized grade. If the card is graded, match the grading company and numerical grade as closely as possible; a slabbed high-grade copy should not be used as a direct benchmark for an ungraded copy.
Why a graded premium has no fixed percentage
No universal raw-to-graded multiplier is established. The difference depends on the card’s scarcity, demand, authentication confidence, grade distribution, grading fees and the buyer pool at that moment. A high grade can command a substantial premium for one card and a modest premium for another. Use sales of the same graded status and grade instead of applying a percentage to a raw price.

A US-dollar result, a euro listing and a UK-pound sale come from different markets. Converting the currency makes the amounts easier to display side by side, but it does not make demand, supply, taxes or seller costs identical.

For a cross-region comparison, note the marketplace, seller location and currency before interpreting the number. A European marketplace may have more local supply for a particular language or set, while a US marketplace may have a larger buyer pool for another. These are practical reasons prices can diverge, not a rule that one region is always cheaper.
- Write down the original currency and amount.
- Convert all figures using one current exchange rate and record the date of conversion.
- Add any import charges, local taxes or cross-border payment costs that the buyer would actually incur.
- Keep the regional result labeled; do not present a converted European listing as though it were a US transaction.
Shipping changes the real price
The amount printed beside a card is not always the amount a buyer pays. TCGplayer orders listings by combined item price and shipping. Its example shows that a card with a lower item price can rank below another listing after shipping is included.
Use delivered cost for comparisons:
Delivered cost = card price + shipping + mandatory taxes or fees that apply to the buyer.
Apply the same rule to every listing. Comparing a free-shipping sale with an item-only price from another site can make the second card appear cheaper when it is not. For international orders, include currency-conversion and delivery charges before drawing a conclusion.

Timing, averages and outliers
A completed sale is one observation at one point in time. A guide’s market figure may average many transactions over a recent window and therefore move more smoothly. Those methods naturally produce different results.
Scarce cards are especially vulnerable to thin evidence. If only a few relevant transactions exist, one buyer’s urgency, a bundle deal, an unusually clean copy or an inaccurate condition description can widen the apparent range. Do not treat the highest or lowest single sale as a normal value without corroboration.
When a guide and a sold listing disagree, check:
- The date of each transaction or update.
- How many relevant sales underpin the summary, if the platform discloses that information.
- Whether accepted Best Offer prices are included. eBay UK says its card guide uses recent eBay sales data, including accepted Best Offer prices.
- Whether the products, conditions, grades, currencies and shipping terms actually match.
A repeatable way to compare marketplace prices
- Identify the exact card. Capture the set, collector number, printing or variant and language. Save a clear scan or photograph so you do not accidentally compare a similar-looking release.
- Choose the product state. Mark the card as raw or graded. For a graded card, record the grading company and numerical grade.
- Match raw condition. Use the platform’s condition categories and inspect disclosed defects. Compare Near Mint with Near Mint, not Near Mint with a vague “good” description.
- Collect completed sales. Record several recent sold transactions for the exact product and condition. A completed sale is evidence of what someone paid, not merely what a seller requested.
- Collect current listings separately. Note item price, shipping, seller location and currency. Keep asking prices in a different column from sold prices.
- Normalize the total. Add shipping and applicable mandatory charges, then convert currencies consistently if the marketplaces use different currencies.
- Remove obvious mismatches. Exclude a different language, printing, grade, bundled lot, damaged copy or transaction with unusual terms.
- Report a range and date. State the low and high of the relevant cluster, the central tendency you used, and the date checked. A range communicates uncertainty more honestly than a precise number.

Answering two common marketplace questions
“Why is my card cheaper on Cardmarket than on TCGplayer?”
First check whether the numbers are even the same type of figure. Cardmarket may be showing a live listing while TCGplayer shows a recent-sales average, or the reverse. Then verify language, printing, raw condition, currency, seller location and shipping. A converted euro item price can still have a different delivered total from a US listing. If several recent completed sales on both marketplaces remain different after those adjustments, the remaining gap may reflect each market’s local supply and buyer demand.
“Should I trust eBay sold prices or a price guide?”
Use both, but understand their roles. A sold listing is a real transaction and may reveal current demand, while a guide can reduce the influence of one unusually high or low result by aggregating sales. Check whether the sold item matches your card and condition, whether the sale included an accepted Best Offer, and how recent the guide’s data is. Several comparable sold results plus a clearly defined guide figure provide stronger evidence than either one alone.

What eBay UK activity figures do—and do not—show
eBay Inc. reported that “Pokémon” was searched more than six million times on eBay UK in July 2026 and that UK users searched for “Pokémon” more than 105 times per minute on average in 2025. These are platform search-activity figures, not card prices, transaction counts or measurements of the entire Pokémon market.
eBay UK also announced a card guide rolling out from September 1, 2026. Its stated use of recent eBay sales, including accepted Best Offer prices, makes the guide’s scope specifically tied to eBay UK data. Availability and labels can change, so record the date and region whenever you use it.
Common mistakes that produce misleading valuations
- Using the card name only: a reprint or alternate variant can have a different market.
- Mixing raw and graded copies: authentication and grade are part of the product.
- Trusting “Mint” as a universal category: platforms define condition differently, and TCGplayer does not use Mint or Gem Mint labels.
- Reading an asking price as a sale: an unsold listing proves only what the seller wants.
- Ignoring shipping: the cheapest item price may not be the cheapest delivered order.
- Converting currency without preserving context: exchange rates do not erase regional demand differences.
- Anchoring on one dramatic sale: an outlier can dominate a thin sample.
- Reporting false precision: a price checked on one date is not a permanent guarantee.
Protecting condition while you wait to sell
Condition standards account for handling wear and damage, so keep cards in clean standard card sleeves and a rigid protective holder when moving or storing them. Protection helps prevent additional wear; the available evidence does not establish that buying sleeves increases a card’s resale price or guarantees a higher grade.

How to state a defensible value
A useful valuation sentence identifies the evidence and its limits: “As checked on [date], comparable raw Near Mint copies of this exact printing showed delivered completed sales between [low] and [high] in [currency], while current listings ranged from [low] to [high].” In a published or personal record, replace the bracketed fields with the actual card-specific observations. Include the marketplace region and say whether the figures include shipping.
This format prevents a guide estimate, an asking price and a single sale from being presented as one universal truth. It also makes the estimate auditable when prices move.
