A Playwright agent failure is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The cause may be a locator that no longer identifies the intended element, an actionability check that cannot pass, an expected page state that never arrives, a timeout or setup problem, or a genuine application defect. Start with the first error and the failing step’s evidence; do not begin by adding sleeps, widening every timeout, or accepting an agent’s patch.
Start by identifying what actually failed
Read the first error and its call log before changing the test. Playwright has separate timeout domains, and a test timeout is not the same as an assertion timeout. Classify the failure so the next check targets the operation that stalled or failed.
- Locator resolution or actionability timeout: the locator may be stale or ambiguous, or the element may not be ready to interact with.
- Assertion timeout: the asserted state did not become true within the assertion’s waiting period.
- Navigation or test timeout: the broader operation or test exceeded its limit.
- Fixture or setup failure: browser setup, hooks, or fixture work may have failed or consumed time before the test action.
- Browser launch or application assertion failure: inspect the launch error or the product behavior itself rather than treating it as a selector problem.
Playwright documents a default per-test timeout of 30,000 ms and a separate default assertion timeout of 5,000 ms; projects can change these settings. See Playwright’s timeout documentation and the assertion configuration reference. Setup, fixtures, hooks, and teardown also matter when assessing the time available to a test; fixture documentation explains how fixture timeouts can be configured separately.
Reproduce the failing state and inspect the evidence
Run the failing test on its own and use the debugging view that makes the problem clearest. UI Mode helps inspect test steps and related artifacts; the Inspector is useful for stepping through API calls and exploring locators. Review the failing step’s history, error, logs, network activity, and DOM snapshot. For intermittent failures, capture and inspect a trace, screenshot, and page state around the suspect step.

The Playwright test-debugging walkthrough also covers attaching to a paused run, checking console errors and requests, and taking a screenshot. Use those artifacts to answer a concrete question: did the expected response arrive, did the relevant element exist, and what state was the page in when the test failed?
Check whether the locator identifies the right element
A locator can fail because it is ambiguous, stale after a UI change, or aimed at the wrong part of the page. Prefer a locator that expresses the user-facing intent, such as a role and accessible name, or use a deliberate test ID when that better fits the application. CSS and XPath remain options, but selectors tied to DOM structure and long selector chains can break when the markup changes. The locator guide describes the available strategies.

Confirm that the locator resolves to exactly one intended element. A click is not just a command to send a mouse event: Playwright checks that the locator is unique and the element is visible, stable, able to receive events, and enabled. If those actionability checks do not pass before the relevant timeout, the action fails. See the auto-waiting and actionability guide. These checks cannot make an incorrect locator correct or repair broken application behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWait for a condition, not an arbitrary number of seconds
Use locator actions and web-first assertions that wait for readiness or retry the condition being tested. A fixed sleep only delays the test; it does not establish that the page reached the state the test needs. Playwright’s Page API says, “Tests that wait for time are inherently flaky,” and documents waitForTimeout() as a debugging-only API, not a production synchronization strategy: Page API reference.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.

- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
If an expected condition never arrives, inspect the UI, network activity, application response, and assertion. Increasing a sleep or timeout without finding out which state is missing can conceal a product bug or leave the test waiting for the wrong thing.
Adjust only the timeout that matches the evidence
After identifying the operation that timed out, decide whether it is legitimately slow or whether the test is waiting for the wrong condition. If a specific operation or setup phase needs more time, tune that limit deliberately; avoid raising all timeout values as a first response. The documented 30,000 ms test and 5,000 ms assertion defaults are configuration baselines, not guarantees that an operation should finish within either interval.

Treat a retry pass as evidence of flakiness
Retries are disabled by default. When retries are enabled, a test that fails first and passes on a subsequent attempt is classified as flaky in Playwright’s report. That result exposes inconsistency; it does not identify or fix the cause. Compare the attempts’ traces, setup, browser state, and test data. Because a worker and browser process can be replaced after a test failure, also check assumptions about shared state and setup. See Playwright’s retry documentation.

Playwright’s Test Agents have distinct planner, generator, and healer roles. The healer can replay a failure, inspect the UI, suggest a patch, and rerun the test; its process has guardrails and may conclude that the application function is broken. A suggested locator, wait, or data change still needs human review. The agent’s explanation and rerun are not proof that the patch preserves the test’s purpose.

- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.

Check the proposed change against the intended user outcome. If the behavior itself is broken, keep the failing test and fix the application rather than weakening the assertion or accepting a patch that hides the defect. A test skipped because the healer believes the feature is broken is not evidence that the feature works. See Playwright’s Test Agents documentation.
Check version and browser alignment when behavior differs by environment
If a test behaves differently between a local machine and CI, record the Playwright version, browser project, operating system, dependencies, and installed browser binaries before concluding that a version mismatch caused the failure. Playwright recommends updating the framework and installing the corresponding browser binaries; its browser documentation covers browser installation and version alignment. The Test Agents documentation says agent definitions should be regenerated after Playwright is updated so they use current tools and instructions.
Quick Recap
Choose the next debugging path by the symptom
| What you need to establish | Useful next step | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Where the test diverged and what artifacts were recorded | Inspect the run in UI Mode | Step history and related test artifacts can help locate the failing state. |
| How API calls and locators behave step by step | Use the Inspector | It supports stepping through calls and exploring locators. |
| Whether a retry pass masks an inconsistent first run | Compare first-run and retry traces, setup, browser state, and data | A fail-then-pass outcome is classified as flaky and still needs diagnosis. |
| Whether a locator communicates intent or depends on implementation details | Compare role/name or deliberate test-ID locators with CSS or XPath | Choose for clarity and resilience to the UI or DOM changes relevant to the test. |
| Whether a timeout is too short or synchronization is wrong | Inspect the specific timed-out operation and expected condition | Evidence can distinguish legitimate duration from a missing state or guessed wait. |
| Whether the test or product is at fault | Verify intended behavior independently before changing the assertion | A broken application should be fixed, not hidden by an agent-generated patch. |
