Plant Smart’s rebuild was less about adding a new framework than making a small project easier to keep alive. Its creator, Wilhelm Murdoch, replaced an aging SvelteKit toolchain with Hugo templates and vanilla JavaScript, first preserving the site’s pages and data output, then improving its interface and plant records. He says the simpler build now runs on push and is “boring to operate”—a deliberate design goal for a hobby project whose maintainer may lose focus.
What Plant Smart does—and why it needed a rebuild
Plant Smart is a free searchable database intended to help people check whether plants may be toxic to pets. Murdoch describes the original motivation as a familiar household question: whether a plant can be brought home without endangering a pet.
The original site used SvelteKit, TypeScript, TailwindCSS, Vite and Go Magefiles. Murdoch says that after years without maintenance, the old build no longer ran. The rebuild addressed that maintenance problem while retaining the project’s original aims: a fast static site, low operating cost and openly available data.
Why simplify the build instead of adding to it?
Murdoch replaced the frontend toolchain with Hugo, a hand-written stylesheet and vanilla JavaScript. Hugo templates read the plant database, generate individual plant pages and reproduce the site’s derived API files. This is the architecture choice in the author’s account—not a general benchmark showing that Hugo is better than other generators.

The change reduces the number of moving parts involved in building the site. That matters especially for a small project that may go untouched for long periods: a setup that is straightforward to rebuild is less likely to become unusable when its maintainer returns.
How the migration preserved the existing site
Murdoch says he treated compatibility as the first task, before redesigning the experience. His initial migration pass retained the old pages, filters, URLs, quirks and ordering. He also compared regenerated data files with their originals and says they were value-identical.

That sequence helps explain how a rebuild can change implementation without needlessly breaking familiar links or data consumers. Establishing parity first gave the later redesign room to add features without conflating those changes with the basic migration.
What changed for visitors
After the parity work, Murdoch redesigned the interface around Plant Smart’s pastel potted-plant mascot. The visual system uses cream backgrounds, warm ink, green and clay accents, rounded controls and the Fredoka typeface. The safe-plants list follows a specific rule described by Murdoch: an entry must appear on the ASPCA non-toxic list and be absent from his toxic-plant database. That is a dataset rule, not a guarantee that a plant is safe for every animal or in every circumstance. The article says regional localization of emergency information was on the roadmap; it does not establish that localization has since been added.
What changed in the plant data
The rebuild also gave Murdoch an opportunity to consolidate duplicate or similarly named entries and review symptom data. He changed a rule so that merging different spellings of symptoms would not silently promote a plant to a higher toxicity severity. That distinction matters: normalizing data can improve consistency, but should not itself change a safety classification.

Murdoch says he sourced taxonomy through GBIF and added toxicity principles and native-range information. These are descriptions of his dataset process, not results of an independent scientific validation study. Readers should treat the site as a reference tool rather than a substitute for veterinary advice or poison-control guidance.

How much lighter the pages became
Murdoch attributes the reduction in page weight to repeated inline SVG assets and template whitespace. He says he switched to a fingerprinted, cached JavaScript bundle, used SVG sprites and trimmed template whitespace. His reported before-and-after figures are below; they are the author’s 2026 measurements, not independently verified benchmarks.

The figures indicate substantial reported reductions across the listed pages. They do not, by themselves, establish load-time improvements across devices or network conditions.
Where the project runs now
Murdoch says he moved the repository to his homelab while keeping the plant data openly available through the API. He describes the service and API as free, and says the build and deployment process runs when he pushes changes. The account presents this as simpler to operate, but does not independently establish the site’s current availability or the API’s current contents.
The maintenance lesson behind the rebuild
The clearest lesson is that a hobby project’s architecture has to fit the reality of its upkeep. Preserving URLs and data output kept the migration from becoming a needless break; simplifying the build reduced the effort required to return to the project; and the later design and data improvements made the rebuild useful to visitors as well as its maintainer.
