Pictures may not transfer because the phone is locked, hasn’t granted the computer permission, is set to charge rather than transfer files, or doesn’t have the full-resolution originals stored locally. A cable or port that cannot carry data can also prevent a connection. The right fix depends on whether you’re moving photos from an iPhone or Android device, to a Mac, Windows PC, or Chromebook, and whether you’re using USB or cloud sync.
Start with the connection and permission checks
Before changing settings or buying a cable, unlock the phone and check for a prompt asking you to allow the connection or trust the computer. On Android, also check whether the USB connection is set to file transfer. If the computer still does not detect the phone, try a different port and a cable known to support data transfer: Google notes that “Not all USB cables can transfer files.” Google’s Android transfer guidance recommends testing another cable or device when troubleshooting connection problems.
Transfer photos from an iPhone or iPad
To a Mac
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Mac with USB. If the Mac asks to allow the accessory, allow it.
- Unlock the device with its passcode if prompted. If asked whether to trust the computer, tap Trust.
- Open the Photos app and select the device in the sidebar. If the Import screen does not appear, choose the device there.
- Wait until the import finishes before disconnecting the device.
To import directly to a folder instead, Apple also documents using Image Capture. See Apple’s photo-transfer instructions.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo a Windows PC
- Install the Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the PC and unlock it if prompted.
- If the phone displays a prompt, tap Trust or Allow.
- Use the Microsoft Photos app to import the pictures; Apple’s transfer instructions direct Windows users to Microsoft’s instructions for that app.
If iCloud Photos is enabled, the full-resolution originals may not be stored on the phone. Download those originals to the iPhone or iPad before importing to the PC. For photos you take in the future, Apple documents Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible; new captures will use JPEG and H.264, which may suit Windows workflows better.

Transfer photos from Android over USB
- Unlock the Android phone and connect it to the computer with USB.
- On the phone, tap the notification labeled “Charging this device via USB”.
- Under “Use USB for,” select “File Transfer.”
- On Windows, use the file-transfer window that opens. On a Chromebook, use the Files app.
- When finished on Windows, eject the phone before unplugging it.
Android can default to charging, which does not make photos available for transfer. If the phone is not detected after selecting File Transfer, check whether Windows automatically detects new hardware, restart the computer, update and restart the phone, and test another cable or device. Menu behavior can vary by Android version; Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 14 and later. Follow Google’s Android USB instructions for the relevant workflow.
Use cloud access instead of a direct cable transfer
Cloud sync or backup can let you access photos on a computer without importing them directly over USB, provided the service is set up and the account has enough storage. The workflow differs by platform:

- Apple devices: With iCloud Photos enabled, photos can be available across Apple devices, at iCloud.com, and on a PC; photos also sync to a Mac. The collection uses iCloud storage, so check that you have enough space. See Apple’s transfer guidance.
- Google Photos: Backed-up items can be accessed from devices signed in to the same Google Account. Google Account storage is shared across Photos, Drive, and Gmail, and Google documents supported file types and size limits. See Google Photos’ backup guidance.
Choose direct USB import for a one-time copy when the phone and computer recognize each other and the needed originals are on the phone. Cloud access is an alternative when you want photos available across signed-in devices, but it depends on account setup and available storage. Check how deletion and synchronization work in your setup before treating a synced library as an independent backup.
When a cable may be the problem
A cable can charge a phone yet fail to transfer files. If the phone is unlocked, permissions are handled, and Android is set to File Transfer—or the iPhone import workflow is followed—test another port and a known data-capable cable. Confirm that the cable supports data and fits your device. Replacing a cable will not resolve a missing Trust or Allow prompt, Android’s charging-only mode, or originals that exist only in the cloud.
