phpMyAdmin imports are slow because a browser upload passes through PHP and the web server before MySQL can parse and store the dump. Large imports can therefore hit upload limits, request timeouts, memory limits, network delays, disk waits, foreign-key checks, index updates, or an oversized SQL statement.
The quickest reliable fix is to identify the failure mode, then move the dump off the browser path: use phpMyAdmin’s server-side UploadDir when available, or import directly with the MySQL client when you have shell access. Adjust PHP limits only when they are the actual bottleneck, and treat file splitting or foreign-key changes as controlled workarounds rather than guaranteed performance boosts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat happens during a phpMyAdmin import
A browser-based import combines several separate operations:
- The browser uploads the dump to the web server.
- PHP accepts the request, stores or streams the file, and runs within its memory and execution limits.
- phpMyAdmin sends SQL statements to MySQL.
- MySQL parses each statement, checks permissions and constraints, writes rows to storage, updates indexes, and may wait for disk or network resources.
- The web server and PHP process must remain alive until the request finishes or reports an error.
A large file can be perfectly valid and still fail because one layer times out or rejects it. Conversely, increasing an upload limit will not make MySQL execute expensive statements faster. Separate transfer problems from database-work problems before changing settings.

Identify the failure before trying to speed it up
Record the exact message and when the import stops. The symptom usually points to the layer that needs attention.
| What you see | Most likely issue | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The file is rejected immediately as too large | upload_max_filesize or post_max_size |
Check both PHP limits; post_max_size must be larger than upload_max_filesize. |
| The request stops after a repeatable number of seconds | max_execution_time, a PHP-FPM limit, or a web-server/proxy timeout |
Compare the stop time with configured request limits and ask the host to raise them if you cannot edit them. |
| PHP reports exhausted memory | memory_limit |
Reduce the amount PHP must hold at once or use a server-side/direct client import; raise the limit only if the host permits it. |
| MySQL says the packet is too large | max_allowed_packet |
Find the individual statement or row that exceeds the packet limit; raising the total file-size limit will not fix it. |
| Foreign-key or constraint errors appear | Tables are being loaded in an order that violates relationships, or checks are enabled during a trusted bulk load | Verify dump order and consider temporary foreign-key-check changes only for a consistent dump. |
| The import is still progressing but is very slow | MySQL parsing, index maintenance, constraint checks, disk throughput, locks, or network latency | Move the workflow server-side or to the MySQL client, then inspect the expensive statements and server resources. |
The phpMyAdmin project’s FAQ identifies four PHP values as the first checks: max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, memory_limit, and post_max_size. Its wording is: “The first things to check (or ask your host provider to check) are the values of max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, memory_limit and post_max_size in the php.ini configuration file.”
Check PHP and web-request limits
upload_max_filesize
This is the maximum size PHP accepts for an uploaded file. If the dump is larger, phpMyAdmin can reject it before MySQL receives anything.
post_max_size
This limits the complete HTTP POST body, which includes the file and form data. It must be greater than upload_max_filesize; setting both to the same value can still cause a large upload to fail because the request contains more than the file alone.
memory_limit
PHP needs memory to process the request and phpMyAdmin needs memory to manage import data. A higher upload allowance does not automatically provide enough memory to handle it. If memory is the failure, a server-side or command-line import is usually safer than trying to make a browser request process the entire dump.

max_execution_time
This controls how long PHP code may execute. A dump can be below the size limit yet fail because parsing and sending its statements takes longer than the allowed request time. Web-server, reverse-proxy, and PHP-FPM request timeouts can terminate the connection independently, so a host may need to adjust more than php.ini.

How to change limits safely
- Check the active PHP configuration used by the phpMyAdmin virtual host, not merely a different command-line PHP installation.
- Note the current values and units before changing anything.
- Set
post_max_sizeaboveupload_max_filesize, and leave enough memory for PHP and the operating system. - Ask the hosting provider to apply the changes when shared hosting does not permit
php.ini, pool, or web-server edits. - Restart the relevant PHP service if the host requires it, then verify the values in phpMyAdmin’s displayed environment information.
- Retry with a small copy or a known-good portion before starting the full dump.
Do not raise every limit indefinitely. Larger limits increase the time and resources consumed by a failed request and can make a busy server less responsive. If a dump is routinely large, change the import path instead of relying on an exceptionally long browser request.
Choose an import path that matches your access
There is no official universal “seconds per gigabyte” figure for phpMyAdmin imports. Speed depends on statement size, indexes, storage, server load, network distance, and configuration. The practical difference between workflows is that each removes a different part of the browser and PHP request chain.
| Workflow | Practical maximum | PHP/web timeout exposure | Access required | Recovery after an error | When it is available |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Browser upload in the Import tab | Constrained by PHP upload and POST limits, memory, request timeouts, and the browser connection | Highest | Only phpMyAdmin access | Usually restart the request and determine where it stopped; resuming is not automatic | Most hosting plans provide it |
Server-side UploadDir |
Constrained mainly by server storage and MySQL/PHP processing limits rather than browser transfer size | Lower for the upload stage; the import request can still time out | Ability to copy a file to the configured directory, commonly SCP or FTP, plus phpMyAdmin access | The file remains on the server, so it can be selected and retried without uploading again | Only when the host configures and permits an upload directory |
| Direct MySQL client | Constrained by server storage, MySQL settings, and the client connection rather than an HTTP upload | Lowest browser/PHP exposure | Shell or equivalent command-line access and database credentials | Command output identifies the failing statement; you can correct the dump or resume with a planned procedure | Plans that provide SSH or another shell route to the database host |
Moving the file server-side removes the browser transfer, but it does not make expensive SQL disappear. Direct client import removes the HTTP request lifecycle as well, which is why it is generally the most robust option for very large dumps.
Use UploadDir for a server-side phpMyAdmin import
phpMyAdmin can be configured with an $cfg['UploadDir'] directory. Files placed there appear in the Import dialog so phpMyAdmin can read them from the server instead of receiving the entire dump through the browser.

- Ask the administrator for the exact directory configured as
$cfg['UploadDir']. Do not assume it is the web root or a directory you can browse publicly. - Transfer the dump to that directory with SCP, FTP, or the host’s file manager. The transfer must finish before you start the import.
- Check that the web-server/PHP user can read the file and that the server has enough free disk space for the dump and the resulting database.
- Open phpMyAdmin, select the target database, and open Import.
- Choose the server-side file offered from the configured upload directory rather than selecting a local browser file.
- Confirm the format and character set shown by phpMyAdmin, then start the import.
- Keep the original file until you have verified tables, row counts, and application queries.
This method is useful when a browser upload is the bottleneck or repeatedly disconnects. It still uses PHP to run the import, so an execution or web-server timeout can remain. If that happens, use the MySQL client or ask the host whether a longer-running server-side import is supported.
Import with the MySQL client when shell access exists
The phpMyAdmin FAQ recommends direct importing when you have command-line access: “If you have shell (command line) access, use MySQL to import the files directly.” This avoids browser upload and PHP request limits.
Interactive method
- Copy the dump to a location readable from the shell, preferably on the database server or a nearby host.
- Connect to MySQL with the account and database that should receive the data.
- At the MySQL prompt, run
source filename.sql;. - Watch the client output for the first error and record the statement or table named.
- After completion, verify that the expected tables and data exist before deleting the dump.
Non-interactive method
Many MySQL installations also accept shell redirection, for example mysql database_name < filename.sql. Use the connection options required by your host, and avoid putting passwords directly into shell history. The exact command-line options vary by authentication setup; the important distinction is that the SQL is sent through the MySQL client rather than an HTTP request.
A direct import can still fail because of SQL syntax, permissions, disk space, locks, packet size, or a corrupt dump. It is not a guarantee that every statement will execute quickly, but it makes failures easier to observe and removes the browser as a separate point of failure.

Use compression and splitting deliberately
Compressed dumps
phpMyAdmin’s import documentation supports compressed formats such as .sql.gz. Compression reduces the bytes transferred and stored during the upload stage, which can help when bandwidth is limited. The server still has to decompress and execute every SQL statement, so compression is not a guaranteed database-speed improvement. Confirm that the installed phpMyAdmin/PHP setup accepts the compression format you plan to use.

Split dumps
Splitting a dump into smaller files can work around a host that refuses to raise upload or request limits. Import the pieces in their original order unless the dump was deliberately divided at safe statement boundaries.
- Keep table definitions before the data that depends on them.
- Do not split in the middle of a quoted string, multi-row statement, or transaction unless the splitting tool understands SQL syntax.
- Keep a numbered manifest so missing or duplicated pieces are obvious.
- Expect additional setup and verification; splitting is a fallback, not a measured performance multiplier.
Handle foreign-key checks without corrupting the load
Foreign-key checks can add work and can reject rows when referenced tables have not yet been loaded. phpMyAdmin’s $cfg['DefaultForeignKeyChecks'] setting can default checks to enabled, disabled, or the server default.
For a trusted, internally consistent dump whose table order makes temporary checks unnecessary, disabling checks during the load may reduce constraint work and avoid ordering failures. This is not appropriate for an unknown or partially damaged dump: disabling checks can allow orphaned rows and leave an invalid database.
- Use the setting only for a controlled import and document its value.
- Restore normal checking after the import.
- Run application-level and database-level validation afterward, especially for parent-child relationships.
- If the dump contains its own
SET FOREIGN_KEY_CHECKSstatements, review them rather than assuming phpMyAdmin’s default alone controls the session.
Diagnose max_allowed_packet errors
A packet is not the whole dump. MySQL defines it as a single SQL statement, a row sent to the client, or a binary-log event. If one packet exceeds max_allowed_packet, MySQL raises ER_NET_PACKET_TOO_LARGE and closes the connection.
That means a modest total file can fail because it contains one enormous multi-row INSERT, a very large text or binary value, or another oversized statement. Increasing upload_max_filesize or splitting the file at arbitrary byte positions will not correct that statement-level problem.

- Identify the table or statement reported immediately before the connection closes.
- Inspect the dump for unusually large multi-row inserts or large BLOB/TEXT values.
- Regenerate the dump with smaller insert batches when the export tool supports that option, or rewrite the affected statement at valid SQL boundaries.
- Ask the database administrator whether the server and client packet limits can be raised consistently.
- Retry the affected portion and validate the resulting rows.
Reduce database work in the dump itself
Once transfer and request limits are ruled out, the remaining time is database work. MySQL must parse statements, write pages, maintain indexes, enforce constraints, and wait for available resources. Practical checks include:
- Import into the intended database and storage engine rather than a slower or incompatible target.
- Check available disk space before starting; a nearly full volume can make writes and temporary operations fail or crawl.
- Avoid running other heavy jobs against the same database during the import when you control the schedule.
- Review whether the dump recreates indexes or triggers at a point that causes unnecessary repeated work; use the export tool’s documented options rather than manually deleting SQL you do not understand.
- Preserve transactions and character-set statements supplied by the export unless you have tested an alternative.
- Use the first failing statement as the unit of diagnosis instead of repeatedly restarting an entire multi-gigabyte file.
These actions improve diagnosis and may reduce work, but the official phpMyAdmin material does not establish a universal percentage speedup for any one setting. Treat claims of a fixed improvement per gigabyte as unverified unless they include the server, schema, dump format, and test conditions.

A practical decision sequence
- Classify the symptom. Immediate size rejection, fixed-time termination, packet error, constraint error, or gradual progress require different fixes.
- Check PHP values. Verify
max_execution_time,upload_max_filesize,memory_limit, andpost_max_size; make sure the POST limit exceeds the file limit. - Stop using the browser for the transfer. Put the dump in
UploadDirwhen the host provides it. - Prefer the MySQL client for very large imports. Use shell access and
source filename.sql;when available. - Use compression or safe splitting only when necessary. Keep statement boundaries and import order intact.
- Change foreign-key behavior only knowingly. Use it for a trusted, consistent dump, then restore checks and validate relationships.
- Investigate packet and SQL errors separately. A single oversized statement is different from an oversized file.
- Verify the result. Check table presence, representative row counts, indexes, foreign keys, triggers, character sets, and application reads before treating the import as complete.
When hosting access is the real limitation
Some shared plans expose only browser-based phpMyAdmin. Others provide a configured upload directory, SCP/FTP access, or SSH and a MySQL client. If you routinely handle large dumps, managed MySQL hosting or MySQL hosting with SSH access can be more practical because it gives you a server-side transfer and direct import path. Availability, geographic location, credentials, limits, and terms differ by provider, so confirm those details before moving a production database.
If the host will not raise PHP limits and provides no server-side or shell workflow, splitting the dump into valid pieces may be the only available workaround. For recurring migrations, changing to a plan with server-side import access is usually a more maintainable solution than repeatedly tuning a browser request.
