A phone controller that will not connect usually has one of a few causes: it is not charged or in the right pairing mode, the old Bluetooth record is stale, the phone and controller are incompatible, or another wireless device is interfering. A controller that connects but has wrong buttons is often a separate problem: the operating system may recognize it while the game does not support it correctly, or the mapping is being changed at the phone, game, or controller-app level.
Work through the checks below in order. Start with power, distance, compatibility, and a clean pairing. Then test the controller outside the affected game, correct assignments at the appropriate settings layer, update software, and only then consider a reset or replacement.
First determine what “not working” means
Do not treat every controller symptom as a Bluetooth failure. Identify the first point at which the setup breaks:
- The controller does not appear in Bluetooth: power, pairing mode, distance, compatibility, or interference is more likely than a game setting.
- It appears but will not finish pairing: a saved pairing record, connection mode, firmware issue, or incompatible phone/controller combination may be responsible.
- The phone says it is connected, but no game responds: the game or app may not support controllers, or it may support only certain input features.
- Some buttons work and others are wrong: the game, phone, or controller software may be using a different layout or remapping.
- It works in one game but not another: the controller and phone are probably capable of communicating; the second game’s support or settings need checking.
- It disconnects or lags: charge level, range, wireless congestion, firmware, or a damaged controller is more likely.
Write down the phone model and operating-system version, exact controller model, connection method, affected game or app, and whether another supported game recognizes the controller. Those details prevent you from applying a fix for the wrong layer.

Fix a phone controller that will not connect
1. Charge the controller and shorten the distance
Charge the controller before changing settings. Keep it close to the phone, with the controller’s status light visible if it has one. A controller can still illuminate or briefly appear in a device list while lacking enough power to complete pairing or maintain input.
ASUS recommends charging for at least 30 minutes in its ROG-phone troubleshooting procedure. That is manufacturer-specific guidance, not a universal requirement for every controller. Follow the charging time and indicator behavior in your controller’s manual. Remove accessories that may obstruct a USB port or prevent the controller from sitting correctly on a charging dock.
Test again at close range with the controller fully awake. If it connects only when held next to the phone, range or interference is part of the problem.

Controllers commonly have separate modes for Bluetooth, a USB connection, a console, Windows, or a particular mobile platform. Use the exact button combination in the controller manual to enter its phone-compatible pairing mode; simply turning it on may reconnect it to a previously remembered device instead.
Check the controller maker’s supported phone operating systems and minimum versions. Android supports compatible Bluetooth and wired controllers, while Apple supports Bluetooth pairing and, for supported controllers, a direct USB connection through a cable that carries both data and charging. Platform support does not guarantee that every button, vibration feature, audio jack, light, or other advanced function works on every phone or in every app.
Google’s Android instructions are available at Android Help. Apple’s pairing and compatibility guidance is at Apple Support. Check the exact controller model rather than relying on a product family name or a retailer’s generic “mobile compatible” label.
3. Forget the old Bluetooth record and pair again
A stale saved record can preserve an old address, mode, or authentication state. Remove it before trying to pair repeatedly.

- Find the controller in saved or previously connected devices.
- Choose the option to remove it. On iPhone, Apple labels this Forget This Device.
- Turn the controller off, then put it into its documented Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Return to the phone’s available-device list and select the controller’s exact name.
- Accept a pairing request or code if the phone displays one.
- Wait for the connection status to settle before launching a game.
If the controller immediately reconnects to another console, computer, tablet, or phone, disable Bluetooth on that nearby device or remove the controller from its saved list temporarily. ASUS describes deleting the saved pairing and pairing again; its procedure is at ASUS ROG Support.
4. Test the controller outside the affected game
A Bluetooth “Connected” label proves only that the phone has established a device connection. It does not prove that a game accepts controller input. Some games support only certain controllers, only selected buttons, or only a controller mode they explicitly list.

Open the phone’s controller settings, if available, or try another game known to support controllers. You can also test the controller with the platform’s documented input screen. If buttons respond in another supported game, stop treating the phone or controller as universally defective and inspect the original game’s support list, control settings, and input mode.
ASUS specifically recommends confirming that the app supports the controller. PlayStation likewise limits its controller guidance to compatible games and applications; its mobile-device information is at PlayStation Support.
5. Temporarily remove wireless variables
Turn off or disconnect other Bluetooth accessories while testing, especially headphones, keyboards, watches, and controllers that may be trying to claim the same device. Move away from crowded wireless equipment, USB 3 hubs, routers, and other sources of radio interference where practical. Keep the controller and phone close together and retest.
Apple lists updating, forgetting and re-pairing, and reducing connected Bluetooth devices among its troubleshooting steps. ASUS also advises checking range and nearby interference. The Apple procedure is at Apple Support, and the ASUS procedure is at ASUS ROG Support.
6. Update the phone, game, controller, and firmware
Install available operating-system and game updates. If the controller has a companion utility or firmware updater supplied by its manufacturer, check for an update using the manufacturer’s instructions. Compatibility can change with a phone OS, game release, controller firmware, or hardware revision.
After updating, forget the controller and pair it again if the manufacturer or platform instructions call for that step. A controller may remain connected through an old session while still exposing outdated behavior to an app.
7. Restart and reset only after the basic checks
Restart the phone and power-cycle the controller. If the connection still fails, use the controller maker’s documented reset method. Reset procedures differ by model and may clear profiles, saved devices, or custom assignments, so record any settings you need before starting.
ASUS recommends reset and restart in its ROG troubleshooting path. PlayStation directs users to reset the controller when a DualSense Edge connection remains problematic. A reset cannot make an unsupported game accept a controller, and it cannot add features that the phone or controller does not implement.
Use a wired connection as a diagnostic, not a guarantee
A wired test can separate Bluetooth pairing or interference from a broader compatibility problem. It is useful only when the specific phone and controller support wired input.

- Use a cable capable of data and charging. A charging-only cable cannot carry controller input.
- Connect the controller while it is in the mode specified by its manual.
- Test in a known compatible game or controller screen before judging the result.
Android documents compatible wired and Bluetooth controllers at Android Help. Apple documents direct USB pairing for supported controllers at Apple Support. PlayStation’s controller guidance is at PlayStation Support. A wired connection may bypass Bluetooth problems, but it will not automatically correct a game’s mapping or make an unsupported controller compatible.

Fix buttons that are mapped incorrectly
Understand the three mapping layers
“Wrong buttons” can originate in three different places:
- Phone-level mapping: the operating system changes button or stick assignments for supported controllers.
- Game-level mapping: the game assigns actions to inputs, may use a different layout, or may not support remapping.
- Controller-level profiles: the controller or its manufacturer app stores a custom profile or platform mode.
Change one layer at a time. If you alter the phone, game, and controller profile together, you will not know which setting caused the result. Return the controller to its default profile where possible, then test the game’s native layout before adding custom changes.
Android: inspect the controller settings
Google documents system customization for compatible Android controllers, including swapping two button assignments or swapping the left and right joysticks. For a Bluetooth controller, the documented route is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connected devices.
- Select the connected controller.
- Open Game Controller settings.
- Inspect or change the available button and joystick assignments.
- Save the change, then retest in the affected game.
Labels and available options can vary by Android version, phone maker, controller, and connection type. If the controller does not appear in this area, return to pairing and compatibility checks rather than assuming a remapping menu exists. Google’s instructions are at Android Help.
iPhone: use supported Game Controller customization
On supported setups running iOS 16 or later, Apple documents the following path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Game Controller.
- Select the controller name.
- Open Default Controls.
- Review the available assignments and test them in the game.
The menu may not appear for every controller or every feature. Apple states that support for specific buttons and features, including a controller’s audio jack or lights, varies by controller and the app being used. Apple’s current pairing and customization guidance is at Apple Support.
Check the game’s own control menu
Many games ignore system-level remaps, apply their own layout, or expose customization only after a controller is connected. Look for Settings, Controls, Input, Gamepad, or Controller inside the game. Check whether the game offers separate layouts for Xbox-style, PlayStation-style, Nintendo-style, or generic controllers, and whether it displays button prompts that differ from the physical labels.
If the game has no controller option and another supported game works, the limitation is probably at the game level. Contact the game developer only after recording the phone OS, controller model, connection mode, and the exact inputs that fail.

Clear conflicting controller profiles
A controller app or onboard profile can override the phone’s expected layout. Disable macros, custom profiles, turbo modes, and platform-specific modes while diagnosing. If the controller has profile buttons or indicator colors, consult its manual and select the standard mobile profile.
Do not assume a manufacturer app is available on both Android and iPhone, or that a profile created on one platform transfers to the other. App features and mapping controls can be operating-system-specific.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use compatibility evidence before blaming the hardware
Compatibility has several separate parts. A controller can satisfy one and fail another:
| Compatibility question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Phone OS | Exact Android or iOS version and the controller maker’s supported versions | A supported controller may require a newer system or may not support an older one. |
| Connection method | Bluetooth mode, USB data mode, required adapter, and cable capability | A controller can support Bluetooth but not wired input, or charge by USB without carrying data. |
| App or game | The specific game, remote-play app, or emulator’s controller list and settings | System recognition does not make every app accept every input. |
| Input features | Buttons, sticks, vibration, audio, lights, touch surfaces, triggers, and remapping | Basic input may work while advanced features are unavailable. |
| Layout and prompts | Physical button labels, in-game prompts, and selected control scheme | A layout mismatch can look like a faulty button even when the input is being received. |
For example, PlayStation’s DualSense Edge support page lists mobile-device requirements and limitations rather than promising full console functionality. It says adaptive triggers are not compatible with Android-based mobile devices and haptic feedback is not compatible with mobile devices. The same page lists iOS 16.4 as the minimum for DualSense Edge support. Treat those statements as model-specific evidence, not a rule for every controller, and verify the current requirements at PlayStation Support.

| Bluetooth fails but wired mode works | Wireless pairing or interference | Use wired mode if the phone, controller, and cable support data; update the controller and retry Bluetooth later. |
When replacement hardware is justified
Consider another controller only after you have checked the exact model, charge, pairing mode, saved Bluetooth record, phone OS, firmware, game support, mapping layers, and wired fallback. Replacement is reasonable when the current controller is physically faulty, its supported OS does not include your phone, the game does not support its input mode, or a required feature is unavailable on mobile.
Use these criteria when evaluating a replacement described as a Bluetooth game controller for phone:
- Minimum Android or iOS version supported by the exact model.
- Whether Bluetooth, wired data, or both are supported on your phone.
- Compatibility with the particular game or remote-play app you intend to use.
- Availability of system-level or app-level remapping.
- Whether the button layout matches the prompts shown by your games.
- Which vibration, trigger, audio, light, touch, or other advanced features function on mobile.
- How the controller enters mobile pairing mode and how profiles are reset.
Do not buy a cable or adapter on the assumption that it will fix a mapping defect. The phone, controller, port, adapter, and cable must all support the same data path, and the game must still accept the resulting input.
A complete troubleshooting order
Use this sequence when you need a single decision path:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Record the phone model, OS version, controller model, connection type, affected app, and exact symptom.
- Charge the controller and test at close range.
- Confirm the controller’s mobile pairing mode and supported phone OS.
- Forget the saved Bluetooth device and pair it again.
- Disconnect other nearby Bluetooth devices and reduce interference.
- Test in the phone’s controller settings or another known compatible game.
- If input works elsewhere, inspect the affected game’s support and control settings.
- Check Android Game Controller settings or iPhone’s Game Controller > Default Controls where supported.
- Remove custom controller profiles and return to the standard mobile mode.
- Update the phone, game, controller firmware, and companion app where applicable.
- Restart the phone and controller, then use the maker’s documented reset procedure if needed.
- Try a compatible data-capable wired connection to isolate Bluetooth from broader support issues.
- Replace the controller only when compatibility, hardware failure, or a missing required feature has been established.
This order prevents a common mistake: replacing a controller when the real problem is an unsupported game, stale pairing, wrong mode, or a remap applied at the wrong layer.
