PETG is my first choice when I want a rigid, practical part without the higher temperature demands and printer setup that some engineering filaments can require. That is a preference for a particular kind of job—not proof that PETG is the best filament, or that it suits every printer, grade, or use.

Why PETG earns the first pick

For general-purpose rigid parts, PETG can be a useful middle ground: it is one option when you need a solid printed form but do not have a specific reason to choose a more temperature-resistant material or a flexible one. Its appeal is not a universal strength or ease-of-printing advantage. The right choice depends on the part’s load, heat, exposure, and the capabilities of your printer.

That distinction matters because “PETG” does not describe one fixed performance profile. Polymaker reports an XY tensile strength of 47.96 MPa and heat-deflection temperature (HDT) of 69 °C for its Polymaker PETG, while its PolyLite PETG is listed at 50.8 MPa and 78 °C. Both HDT figures are reported at 0.45 MPa. Those are named product values, not a single benchmark for all PETG filaments. Polymaker’s technical overview is the place to check the specific grade’s data.

When another filament is a better fit

Choose for heat, not the material label

Prusa Research’s material guide gives PETG an HDT range of 70–90 °C, compared with 90–110 °C for ASA, 95–110 °C for ABS, and 100–115 °C for PC. These are guide-level ranges, not guaranteed values for every brand or a promise that a finished part will remain reliable at the top of the range. Prusa’s material guide is useful for a broad comparison; use the filament manufacturer’s specification for the grade you plan to print.

HDT is a test property, not a universal maximum operating temperature. A real part’s performance also depends on its geometry, print quality, load, and exposure conditions. If heat is critical, compare product-specific data under matching test conditions and consider how the printed part will actually be used.

Choose a flexible material for flexible parts

TPU is a flexible filament family. PETG and the engineering materials in this comparison are generally considered when a more rigid form is wanted, but product properties vary. Confirm that the particular grade is suitable for the part rather than relying on the family name alone.

Account for setup and handling

Material choice affects more than the finished part. In its guide, Prusa recommends an enclosure for ASA, ABS, PC, and nylon, while PETG is listed without that recommendation. It also recommends a drybox for PA (nylon) and identifies a hardened nozzle requirement for composite materials. These are Prusa’s recommendations, not universal rules for every machine or filament; follow the guidance for your own printer and product. Prusa’s material guide lists broad material-specific guidance.

What outdoor use does—and does not—tell you

A filament name alone cannot establish how long a printed part will last outdoors. A 2026 preprint reports UV-aging tests on selected printed samples exposed in a controlled environmental cell for 7,744 consecutive hours, or 322 days. That is a description of the study’s exposure period, not a service-life estimate for a PETG part in the field. The result is bounded by the samples and test method; it cannot predict the life of an arbitrary part in a different climate, orientation, or use. The study’s abstract provides the reported scope.

A practical way to choose

  1. Start with the part. Decide whether it needs to be rigid or flexible, what loads it will see, and whether heat or outdoor exposure is a concern.
  2. Compare the actual grades. Check the chosen filament’s datasheet for relevant properties such as HDT and mechanical values. Do not treat a family-wide number as a guarantee.
  3. Check printer requirements. Confirm the manufacturer’s recommended enclosure, nozzle, bed, and storage conditions for both your printer and the specific filament.
  4. Consider conditioning. Printed-part measurements can depend on processing. For example, Polymaker marks its listed nylon samples as annealed; comparing those values casually with unannealed products can mislead.
  5. Validate the use case. When the consequences of failure matter, test a representative printed part under the real load and environment rather than relying on a filament label or a datasheet value alone.
