People may stop wearing an Apple Watch because charging becomes a chore, its everyday benefits no longer feel worth the effort, it is uncomfortable, or its connection to the iPhone feels unnecessary or distracting. These are plausible personal reasons, not a proven ranking: the available sources do not establish a current, representative survey of people who have abandoned Apple Watch.
1. Charging becomes another daily task
Regular charging can feel inconvenient, especially if you want to wear your watch overnight for sleep tracking. Apple says battery life depends on several factors, including the watch’s age and how it is used. Use, configuration, cellular network, and signal strength also affect results, so one person’s battery experience may not match another’s.
Apple’s published Series 12 battery test covered 24 hours under a specific routine: 300 time checks, 90 notifications, 15 minutes of app use, a 60-minute workout with music, and six hours of sleep tracking. Apple cautions that results vary; this is a manufacturer test, not a guarantee for every owner or model. Apple’s Series 12 battery test details.
Low Power Mode can extend battery life, but it changes what the watch does. Apple says it turns off or limits features such as Always On Display, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, and heart-rate notifications. Some notifications may be delayed, and some network connections may be limited. That leaves a practical tradeoff: accept fewer features to save power, or charge more often to keep them available. Two survey findings offer context, but neither measures current Apple Watch abandonment. In a 2015 451 Research/ChangeWave survey of 145 Apple Watch owners, fielded July 27–August 4, 37% said battery life was too short. In a 2026 Brox Insights panel of 200 U.S. digital twins based on long-form interviews, 14.5% selected charging as the main reason they might stop wearing a smartwatch or fitness tracker. That panel asked what respondents would most likely do if they stopped; it was not a survey of people who had actually quit.
2. The watch no longer feels useful enough
Once the novelty wears off, a wearer may find they do not use enough features to justify keeping a device on their wrist and charging it. Apple markets the watch for health, fitness, communications, and safety, including activity and workout tracking, calls and texts, and supported cellular use away from an iPhone. The useful question is not how many features the watch has, but which ones you rely on.

If your phone already handles the tasks you care about, the watch may feel redundant. If you regularly use activity, health, or safety features, the balance may be different. A 2026 Brox Insights panel found that 50% of its 200 hypothetical digital-twin respondents named novelty wearing off as the main possible reason to stop using a smartwatch or fitness tracker. This is predicted, category-wide sentiment—not an observed abandonment rate or an Apple Watch-specific result.
Research on wearable health-tracker abandonment has also discussed barriers to fitting devices into everyday routines. That is useful background, but it does not establish how often Apple Watch owners stop wearing their devices or why.

3. It is uncomfortable to keep on
Comfort depends on the wearer, the band and case, daily activities, and whether the watch is worn during sleep. A device that irritates the wrist or feels intrusive can lose out to wearing nothing at all. That experience is individual; the available figures do not show what share of Apple Watch owners quit because of discomfort.
In the 2026 Brox Insights hypothetical panel, 14.5% selected discomfort as a possible main reason to stop wearing a smartwatch or fitness tracker. Because respondents were asked to predict what might make them stop, this figure is not a measured share of former Apple Watch users.

4. The phone connection feels unnecessary or distracting
Calls, texts, app use, and supported cellular connectivity are central parts of Apple’s product pitch. For some wearers, having useful information on the wrist is convenient; for others, more alerts and an always-available connection may feel like an interruption or an unnecessary extension of the phone.

That is a dated finding about dislike among owners, not evidence that 31% stopped wearing the watch. The sources available do not establish notification overload as a leading cause of Apple Watch abandonment, so it is best understood as a personal preference rather than a general trend.

How to decide whether to keep wearing one
Before giving up on a wearable or switching to another, compare the actual experience you want—not just a feature list. Think about how often you are willing to charge, how the device feels during work, exercise, and sleep, how much control you want over notifications, and whether you use its activity, sleep, health, communication, or safety features. Going without a wearable may be the better fit if none of those functions earn their place in your routine.
The evidence here does not establish a best alternative model. Battery performance depends on the device and use, and comfort and notification preferences vary, so choose against your own needs rather than a universal ranking.
