Some music and film fans still buy CDs, DVDs and vinyl because a physical copy gives them a different kind of access: it is theirs to play without depending on a subscription, a service’s catalogue or an algorithm. Others value privacy, focused listening, the chance to support musicians, or simply handling the disc or record. Those are reasons given by individual readers interviewed by The Guardian, not evidence that all streamers feel the same way or that physical media is replacing streaming.
Why do people choose physical media over streaming?
In a 2 October 2026 feature, The Guardian spoke with music and film fans who described several distinct reasons for returning to physical formats. Their accounts show how personal the choice can be: the appeal is not just nostalgia, and it does not require giving up streaming altogether. Read the Guardian feature.
They want dependable access to a particular title
Streaming offers convenient access to a large catalogue, but access depends on the service and the titles it carries. Interviewees described buying copies so a chosen film or album would not depend on a subscription or remain available in a streaming catalogue. A physical copy provides access to that particular edition, though it cannot promise that a disc or record will stay playable indefinitely.

Some interviewees preferred making their own choices instead of relying on recommendations. Ruth, a retired professor from Michigan, put it this way: “No algorithm is as creative as a well-stocked human brain alive to its actual surroundings.” This is her view, rather than a general finding about how people use recommendation systems.

They want to listen or watch with more intention
Ash, a 52-year-old university lecturer from Cornwall, said: “I spent more time making playlists than listening to music; I lost the ability to listen to a whole album and missed the physical connection with music.” For Ash, playing a record or CD was a way to return to album listening and the tactile experience of music.
Privacy, connection and artist support matter to some buyers
Some readers described feeling “less controlled” when using physical formats. Others said they wanted to support musicians. These are personal motivations reported in the interviews; they do not establish how much money a particular purchase sends to an artist, since that can depend on what is bought and where.

Finding older titles can be part of the appeal
Secondhand shops and flea markets were among the places interviewees used to look for older or hard-to-find music and films. Browsing for a specific title can be an alternative to waiting for it to appear in a streaming catalogue.
Does “if you can’t hold it, you don’t own it” mean streaming customers own nothing?
The phrase captures a feeling of uncertainty about continued access, not a legal conclusion. A stream usually provides access through a service under its terms; a purchased physical copy is an object the buyer can keep and play with compatible equipment. Those are different arrangements and experiences. The interviews do not analyze consumer law, so they cannot establish what rights a particular customer has in every country or under every service’s terms.

Physical media and streaming solve different problems
The choice need not be all-or-nothing. The Guardian accounts include people who stream some media while preferring physical formats for other uses. Consider what matters most for the titles you actually want to hear or watch:
| Priority | Physical copy | Streaming access |
|---|---|---|
| Access to a chosen title | Keeps access to the particular copy without relying on a subscription or catalogue listing; the item can still wear out or become unplayable. | Convenient when the title is in the service’s catalogue, but availability depends on the service. |
| Ease and breadth | Requires finding and keeping individual titles. | Can make a broad catalogue easy to browse, subject to availability. |
| Choice and recommendations | You select the item directly; some interviewees value the absence of algorithmic mediation. | Services may use algorithms to recommend content. |
| Internet reliability | Playback of a disc or record does not depend on an internet connection. | Access depends on the service and internet conditions. |
| Privacy | Some interviewees felt less controlled using physical formats. | The interviews do not compare services’ data practices. |
| Listening or viewing ritual | Handling and playing an item can make listening or viewing more deliberate. | Convenient access can suit casual or on-the-go use. |
| Equipment and space | Needs compatible playback equipment and room to store a collection. | Does not require storing discs or records at home. |
This is a qualitative comparison based on the interview accounts, not a test of sound quality, cost or environmental impact.

What to consider before starting a physical collection
- Choose by title and format: Check whether the music or film you want is available in the format you can play.
- Check your equipment: CDs and DVDs require compatible players; vinyl requires a turntable. A device that plays one format may not support another.
- Think about storage: Discs and records take physical space, especially as a collection grows.
- Decide whether new or secondhand suits you: Interviewees described finding older media in secondhand shops and flea markets. Condition and availability will vary from item to item.
- Match the format to your routine: Physical copies suit people who value access to particular titles or a focused listening and viewing ritual. Streaming may remain more convenient for browsing and broad access.
Do physical formats mean streaming is going away?
No conclusion about a market-wide shift follows from these accounts. The feature reports individual experiences, including collections of 5,300 CDs belonging to Ruth and more than 5,000 records and CDs collected by Ash from 1990 to 2009. Those are personal collection counts, not sales figures or evidence of how common the preference is. The interviews explain why some fans choose physical media; they do not measure whether those formats are gaining ground overall.
