PC prices can fall when a manufacturer, distributor, or retailer has more units of a particular configuration than it expects to sell at the planned price. The resulting discount may be genuine, but it usually applies to that model, specification, seller, or sales period—not to the PC market as a whole.

Market shipments and retail inventory are different things. A shipment decline measures fewer computers entering sales channels; it does not count every unsold laptop or desktop in stores and warehouses. In 2026, the latest industry data points to a more complicated pattern: higher memory and storage costs, constrained component allocation, and a shift toward expensive configurations have pushed average prices higher even as shipment volumes weaken.

What determines a PC’s price?

A computer’s price reflects several moving parts at once. The most important are component costs, available supply, buyer demand, the mix of configurations being sold, and the seller’s inventory position.

Component costs

Processors, graphics chips, DRAM memory, NAND storage, displays, batteries, chassis materials, operating-system licenses, shipping, and warranty service all contribute to the cost of a finished PC. When a constrained component becomes more expensive, vendors can raise prices, reduce the number of units they build, or change the specification to use a different part.

Memory and storage are especially important because they are present in almost every laptop and desktop. A shortage can therefore affect entry-level and premium systems at the same time. The impact is not limited to the price tag: manufacturers may offer less memory or storage, delay a configuration, or reserve scarce parts for higher-margin products.

Supply and demand

If buyers want more computers than manufacturers and retailers can supply, prices generally face upward pressure. If supply exceeds demand for a particular model, sellers have an incentive to discount it. Demand can also fall after a buying cycle ends, when a newer processor generation arrives, or when higher prices cause shoppers to postpone purchases.

Product mix and average selling price

Industry average selling price (ASP) is not the same as the price of a typical listing. ASP can rise simply because a larger share of shipped computers are expensive business laptops, gaming systems, or AI-capable models. A market can therefore sell fewer units while its ASP increases.

Inventory and commercial timing

Every participant in the channel makes an inventory decision. A manufacturer may build ahead of an expected component-price increase; a distributor may stock a model for a seasonal promotion; and a retailer may order deeply for a back-to-school or holiday period. If the expected sales do not arrive, the owner of those units may use a discount, bundle, rebate, or advertising campaign to convert stock into cash.

How unsold inventory produces discounts

Model-level excess, not a market-wide collapse

Unsold inventory is usually specific to a model, configuration, color, region, or seller. A retailer with too many 16 GB/512 GB laptops may discount those units while a nearly identical 32 GB/1 TB version remains at full price. A vendor may also cut the price of an older generation after launching a successor, even when component costs are still rising.

Carrying costs create pressure to sell

Inventory ties up cash and occupies warehouse or shelf space. Older electronics also lose appeal as specifications change. A seller facing storage expense, a product refresh, or a return deadline may prefer a smaller margin today to the risk of a larger write-down later.

Promotions can hide the size of the cut

A lower checkout price may come from a temporary coupon, a mail-in rebate, free memory or storage, a bundle, or a financing offer rather than a permanent list-price change. The promotion can offset an earlier increase without showing that every cost in the supply chain has fallen.

Why one retailer’s stock does not predict another’s

Retailers buy at different times and in different quantities. One may have secured inventory before a component-price increase, while another replenished at the higher cost. Their prices can diverge even when they sell the same model. Local demand, returns, and regional distribution also matter.

Why PC shipments can fall while prices rise

Shipment volume and price measure different dimensions of the market. Higher costs can push prices up, which can reduce the number of buyers able or willing to purchase. At the same time, vendors may prioritize premium configurations that generate more revenue per unit. The result is fewer units shipped but a higher ASP.

What Gartner reported for Q3 2026

Gartner’s preliminary Q3 2026 worldwide estimate counted 55.4 million PC shipments, down 22.4% year over year. Gartner said the decline was driven by higher prices, vendor-led reprioritization of scarce components, and a shift toward higher-priced configurations—not by excess inventory. Its shipment statistics represent products sold into channels; they do not directly count the unsold units held by each retailer or warehouse.

IDC’s 2026 outlook

In an outlook published June 2, 2026, IDC forecast an 11.3% decline in worldwide PC shipments for 2026 and 17% growth in PC average selling prices. Those are forecasts, not final full-year measurements or a statement about the price of a specific laptop in a specific store.

Jean Philippe Bouchard, IDC’s vice president of devices and consumers, said: “We’re not seeing any relief to the memory shortage situation before the end of 2027, which means prices will continue to rise and PC manufacturers will struggle to maintain full product portfolios for the foreseeable future.” That is an attributed analyst view; component availability and prices can change.

Why the first quarter looked stronger

Gartner recorded 62.8 million worldwide PC shipments in Q1 2026, up 4% year over year. Rishi Padhi, Gartner’s research principal, called that growth “artificially inflated.” Vendors and channel distributors built inventory before expected Q2 price increases, and the comparison quarter in 2025 had been boosted by shipments brought forward ahead of expected U.S. tariffs. The increase therefore does not represent a clean measure of ordinary consumer demand.

Key figures and what they do—and do not—show

Period and source Reported or forecast figure What it indicates Important qualification
Q3 2026, Gartner 55.4 million shipments; down 22.4% year over year Channel shipment volume fell sharply Preliminary worldwide estimate; shipments into channels, not a count of retail stock; Gartner attributed the decline to prices and component allocation rather than excess inventory
Q1 2026, Gartner 62.8 million shipments; up 4% year over year More units entered channels than in Q1 2025 Inflated by pre-price-increase inventory building and a tariff-front-loaded comparison quarter
Full year 2026, IDC outlook published June 2, 2026 11.3% projected shipment decline; 17% projected ASP growth IDC expected volume and price to move in opposite directions Forecasts, not final measured results or a retailer price index
Full year 2025, Gartner account published in 2026 More than 270 million shipments; up 9.1% from 2024 The market rebounded from 2024 Gartner linked the rebound to Windows 11 upgrades, other demand factors, and inventory purchased ahead of expected memory-price increases

Shipments, channel inventory, and retail inventory are not interchangeable

Shipments are computers moving into a sales channel, such as a distributor or retailer. They are useful for measuring the flow of products through the market.

Channel inventory is stock held by distributors and retailers after manufacturers have shipped it. It can include units waiting for allocation, promotion, or sale.

Retail inventory is the stock a particular seller has available in stores or fulfillment centers. Only the seller has a complete, current view of that quantity.

A shipment increase can reflect deliberate stock building rather than strong end-user demand. A shipment decline can result from higher prices, production limits, or vendors reserving components for selected models. Neither direction proves that retailers have too much stock.

How memory and storage shortages change what you can buy

When DRAM or NAND costs surge, a manufacturer has several choices:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Raise the price while keeping the advertised memory and storage.
  • Ship fewer units of lower-priced configurations.
  • Redirect scarce components to premium or business models.
  • Offer a different memory or storage capacity than originally planned.
  • Delay or discontinue a configuration whose margin no longer works.

IDC has described memory shortages as affecting price, volume, availability, and product configuration. That means two computers with the same processor name may not be economically equivalent if one has less memory, a smaller SSD, or a slower storage option.

How to judge whether a PC discount is meaningful

Use the following process before treating a sale as evidence that unsold inventory has made PCs broadly cheaper.

  1. Identify the exact model number. Do not rely only on a family name. Manufacturers often sell several configurations under nearly identical names.
  2. Record the complete specification. Note the processor model, graphics processor, memory capacity and type, storage capacity and type, display size and resolution, operating system, wireless standard, ports, battery rating, and upgrade options.
  3. Calculate the final checkout price. Include required shipping, taxes, recycling fees, mandatory accessories, and any rebate that you may not actually receive.
  4. Check whether the price is temporary. Look for an end date, limited quantity, coupon requirement, membership condition, or financing obligation.
  5. Compare like with like. A cheaper computer with half the memory or storage is not a direct price comparison. Match the warranty length, return terms, display, and core components.
  6. Assess the seller’s return policy. A clearance unit can be reasonable if returns are straightforward; a nonreturnable item carries more risk if the specification or condition is unclear.
  7. Consider upgradeability. Replaceable memory or storage can make a lower-priced base configuration more useful, while soldered components make the original specification more important.

When waiting may or may not help

Waiting for a specific model to be discounted

Waiting can make sense when you have identified an older generation, a seasonal sale period, or a configuration that appears widely available. The possible benefit is a model-specific promotion, not a guaranteed market-wide decline.

Buying before a known requirement

If you need a working computer for school, employment, travel, or a fixed project date, delaying for an uncertain price change can cost more than a modest discount. Choose the specification that meets the requirement and compare the final prices available now.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Waiting for component relief

Analyst forecasts about memory supply describe market risk over time, not a guaranteed date when every PC becomes cheaper. A shortage can ease for one component while another cost rises, and manufacturers can change configurations before retail prices move.

Common situations and the correct interpretation

What you observe Most defensible interpretation What you should verify
A laptop is 20% off for a weekend A temporary promotion or an effort to move that seller’s stock Exact model, prior price, final checkout total, and return period
Several low-end models disappear while premium models remain Component allocation or margin priorities may be favoring higher-priced configurations Whether memory, storage, or graphics options changed
Industry shipments fall but advertised prices rise Higher input costs and weaker unit demand can coexist Whether the figures are shipments, ASP, forecasts, or local retail prices
A retailer has many clearance units That retailer may be reducing model-specific or aging inventory Condition, warranty, configuration, and whether replacement parts remain available
A quarter shows unusually strong shipments Stock may have been built ahead of an expected price increase or tariff Whether the increase reflects end-user purchases or channel loading

What buyers should take from the 2026 evidence

  • A store-level discount can be caused by excess stock in one model line without proving that the entire PC market is getting cheaper.
  • Lower shipment volumes do not, by themselves, prove that retailers are overstocked.
  • Higher memory and storage costs can raise prices, reduce availability, and change configurations at the same time.
  • Shipment totals and ASP figures are market context, not evidence that a particular listing is fairly priced.
  • The safest comparison is between complete configurations at the final checkout price, including warranty and return terms.

The available worldwide figures do not provide a country-level retail price tracker, live store inventory counts, or a decision for a particular model. Gartner’s latest cited Q3 estimate is preliminary, and IDC’s full-year numbers are forecasts published June 2, 2026. For a purchase decision, current local listings and the exact specification matter more than a single market headline.
