“Four times smaller” can mean fewer pixels or fewer bytes—and those are different problems. If an image’s width and height are both halved, it contains one quarter as many pixels. If only its file size in bytes is four times smaller, that alone says nothing about its dimensions or visual quality. Without the tool names, settings, and files, the cause of a particular difference cannot be identified.
First, find out what “smaller” means
Compare the downloaded files, not just their previews. Record each image’s width and height in pixels, then check its file size in bytes. Pixel dimensions describe how many pixels the image contains; bytes describe how much data its encoded file uses. A smaller download does not necessarily have lower resolution.
- Fewer pixels: One or both dimensions are lower.
- Fewer bytes: The encoded file takes less storage, which can happen even when dimensions are unchanged.
The arithmetic behind a fourfold pixel-count difference is straightforward: if both width and height are halved, the pixel count is (width ÷ 2) × (height ÷ 2), or one quarter of the original. That explanation applies only when both dimensions are half as large; it does not establish that this happened in any particular comparison.

Different output dimensions
Image-generation tools and APIs can offer output-size controls, and supported sizes may depend on the model. OpenAI’s image-generation guide lists image dimensions alongside other output controls. Its Images API reference describes model-specific size behavior. Those documents establish that settings can matter; they do not identify the settings used by the tools in an unspecified comparison.

Different formats and encoding
The same pixel dimensions can take different numbers of bytes when saved in different formats or with different encoding settings. MDN describes JPEG as lossy, PNG as lossless, and WebP as supporting both lossy and lossless encoding. Google’s WebP documentation reports that, in its stated comparisons, lossy WebP files are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent quality, while lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNGs. These are format comparisons reported by Google, not guarantees for every image or encoder.
OpenAI’s image-generation guide also lists quality, format, compression, and background among output controls. A change in file bytes therefore does not by itself prove a change in resolution or visual quality.

Resizing or exporting after generation
A tool may return an image that is subsequently resized or exported by another step in the workflow. Check for edits, downloads, conversions, or export settings after generation before attributing a size difference to the generator itself.

- Record dimensions. For each downloaded file, note width × height in pixels and its aspect ratio. Do not estimate from an on-screen preview.
- Record file size. Check the actual size in bytes separately from the pixel dimensions.
- Note format and quality settings. Record whether each file is JPEG, PNG, WebP, or another format, along with any compression or quality option.
- Record the generation setup. Note the exact model, tool or endpoint, requested size or automatic-size setting, and any post-generation resize or export step. Model support and size constraints can differ, as the OpenAI API reference documents.
- Compare like with like. Use the same input and equivalent settings where possible. If the tools apply different defaults, confirm that in their settings or output files before treating it as the explanation.
What the “4x” difference does—and does not—tell you
- If both dimensions are half as large, the output has one quarter the pixels.
- If the file is one quarter the size in bytes, that does not tell you whether its dimensions changed.
- A byte-size ratio alone cannot establish that two images have the same visual quality or that one tool caused a resolution loss.
For OpenAI’s GPT Image models listed in its API reference, the documented arbitrary-dimension rules include dimensions divisible by 16 and an aspect ratio between 1:3 and 3:1, subject to current model pixel and edge limits. The reference calls resolutions above 2560×1440 experimental and lists 3840×2160 as the maximum supported resolution. These details apply to the models and reference version documented there, not to image tools in general; consult the current API reference for up-to-date constraints.
