If Excel itself starts normally but one workbook takes ages to open, the delay may come from that file’s formulas, formatting, objects, links, or queries—not Excel in general. If every workbook is slow, investigate add-ins, startup settings, updates, other processes, and your system before changing the file. Start by identifying which pattern fits.
Is Excel slow to start, or is one workbook slow to open?
Open Excel without opening the problem file, then open a small, unrelated workbook. Note whether the delay happens before the worksheet grid appears, or after the problem workbook begins loading.
- Excel and several workbooks are slow: investigate the startup environment, add-ins, updates, and other processes first.
- Only one workbook is slow: focus on its contents, calculations, links, and queries.
- The workbook opens but pauses during an update or recalculation: test the relevant refresh or calculation behavior rather than treating the delay as a general startup problem.
These comparisons narrow the investigation; none proves a cause on its own. Microsoft recommends Safe Mode troubleshooting for Excel hangs and startup or opening problems. Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps also note that Excel may seem unresponsive while another process is using it. If you can see another operation in progress, let it finish before trying more actions.

Could an add-in be making Excel slow to start?
On Windows, use Safe Mode as a comparison test. It bypasses certain startup locations and settings, including Excel add-ins and most COM add-ins. If Excel behaves better in Safe Mode, an add-in or startup customization may be involved; Safe Mode is not itself a lasting fix.

- Press
Windows key + R, enterExcel /safe, and press Enter. - Open the workbook or test Excel’s startup behavior. Compare it with a normal launch.
- If the issue improves, return to normal Excel and go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins in the Manage box, then select Go.
- Disable the listed COM add-ins and test again. Re-enable them one at a time, testing after each, to identify whether one causes the slowdown.
Because Safe Mode also bypasses other startup elements, improvement is a clue, not proof that a particular add-in is responsible. If disabling COM add-ins does not change the behavior, continue checking the workbook and other startup or environmental factors. See Microsoft’s full startup and hang troubleshooting guidance.
Is Excel refreshing links or recalculating during opening?
Check external workbook links
A workbook can refresh linked data when it opens, adding time to the loading process. In Excel, inspect Data > Queries and Connections > Workbook Links. Depending on the workbook, its links can prompt before refreshing, refresh automatically, or skip refresh on open. Microsoft explains these choices in its workbook links guidance.

Skipping refresh may make opening faster, but the displayed linked values can then be out of date. Choose that setting only if you understand the data’s freshness requirements and are responsible for checking or refreshing it when needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTest whether automatic calculation is contributing
For a workbook with complex formulas, temporarily test Manual calculation mode to see whether automatic recalculation is responsible for the pause. Change the setting in Formulas > Calculation Options > Manual, then compare opening or responsiveness. Treat this as a diagnostic, not a blanket recommendation: formulas may not recalculate automatically while the mode is Manual, so restore the intended calculation behavior and verify results after the test. Microsoft includes calculation mode among its steps for investigating Excel performance and hangs.

What workbook contents can make opening slow?
If one file is the outlier, inspect its structure before deleting content. Microsoft identifies the following as possible performance trouble spots, not guaranteed causes:
- Formulas that reference entire columns when they only need a limited range.
- Array formulas whose argument ranges contain uneven numbers of elements.
- Hundreds or thousands of hidden objects, or objects with zero height or width.
- Excessive cell styles, which can accumulate through frequent copying and pasting between workbooks.
- Excessive or invalid defined names.
- Large numbers of geometric shapes or complex shape objects.
These are checks to guide an investigation; do not assume that any one item explains a delay without testing. Microsoft’s Excel troubleshooting article recommends keeping Excel current when files contain many geometric shapes or extensive formatting.

Use formatting cleanup cautiously
Microsoft documents an Inquire feature called Clean Excess Cell Formatting, which can reduce excess formatting and file size. Its availability depends on the installed Microsoft 365 edition. Before using it, make a backup: Microsoft warns the command can increase file size in some cases and cannot be undone. Details are in Microsoft’s excess-formatting guidance.
Do Excel’s size limits mean my workbook is too large?
Excel’s product limits provide scale context, not a threshold at which a workbook becomes slow. Microsoft lists these specifications for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016:
Best Value
- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
| Specification | Microsoft’s stated limit |
|---|---|
| Rows per worksheet | 1,048,576 |
| Columns per worksheet | 16,384 |
| Unique cell formats | 65,490 |
| Number of open workbooks | Limited by available memory and system resources |
These are limits, not recommended targets or performance benchmarks. A workbook does not need to approach one of them to open slowly, and being below a limit does not rule out a performance problem. See Microsoft’s Excel specifications and limits.
Could an Excel update or known issue explain the delay?
Check your installed Excel version and the current Windows known-issues page before attempting a workaround. Microsoft says versions beginning at 2503 include fixes involving PivotTable refresh performance, freeze panes rendering, and geometric shape loading, and recommends the latest Current Channel version. An update may help with a matching issue, but it is not guaranteed to fix a slow workbook. Confirm that a listed issue applies to your version and circumstances.
Microsoft’s Current Channel release notes describe version changes. Its known issues in Excel for Windows page was last updated in September 2026; check the live page for current issues and workarounds before relying on an older entry.
Quick Recap
What should you try next?
- If Excel and multiple workbooks are slow, compare normal startup with Safe Mode and investigate add-ins, startup items, updates, other processes, and the system environment.
- If only one workbook is slow, observe whether the pause coincides with link or query refresh or formula calculation.
- For a refresh-related delay, review the workbook’s link settings and make an informed choice about freshness versus opening time.
- For a calculation-related delay, test Manual mode briefly and confirm calculation behavior afterward.
- If neither explains it, inspect the workbook for the specific formula, object, style, or defined-name issues Microsoft identifies. Back up the file before cleanup.
- Check Excel’s version and applicable known issues. If the problem remains, the evidence so far points to a need for more targeted workbook or environment diagnosis—not an automatic need to replace hardware or run a generic cleanup utility.
