Oil prices eased as traders weighed the prospect of additional fuel supply against continuing conflict and shipping risks. Reports of recovering Middle East crude exports and a Russian diesel supply announcement added downward pressure, but neither proves that all the announced barrels or fuel had reached buyers. The market was balancing expectations, not responding to a confirmed end to supply risks.
What prices were doing
On October 12, 2026, Brent traded below $103 a barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) near $90 in early trading, according to Gulf News. Those were intraday levels, not closing prices.
The market had also seen a separate decline on October 6. At 10:30 a.m. EDT that day, Brent was down $1.84, or 1.8%, to $98.48 a barrel, while WTI had fallen $1.42, or 1.6%, to $88.01, Reuters reported. These timestamped quotes are not settlement prices or a measure of the full week’s trend.

Why expectations of more supply weighed on prices
Middle East crude exports were recovering
Reuters reported on October 6 that increased Middle East exports helped ease concerns about oil supply. Vitol’s CEO estimated that about 12 million barrels per day of crude and 2 million barrels per day of refined products had left the Middle East on tankers during the preceding seven to 10 days. That was an estimate for that period, not a standing export rate.
Saudi shipments through the Strait of Hormuz reached 2.9 million barrels per day in September, up from around 1 million in August, according to preliminary Kpler data reported by The National. Gulf News later cited a JPMorgan Chase estimate that Persian Gulf exports were 17.5 million barrels per day on October 12, or 98% of pre-war levels. These are distinct estimates with different timeframes and sources, rather than proof that every route or export stream had fully normalized.

Russia’s diesel announcement added another supply expectation
On October 9, U.S. President Donald Trump said Russia had agreed to supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel immediately to the American and global market, followed by 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons “immediately thereafter.” He also said another 3 million tons could arrive “within a short period of time,” conditional on the state of Russian diesel refineries, Reuters reported.
Those quantities describe Trump’s announcement, not independently confirmed deliveries. Reporting available by October 12 did not establish cargo schedules, delivered tonnage, or a measurable effect on crude prices. The distinction matters: diesel availability can affect the broader energy balance, but diesel is not crude and announced volumes are not the same as fuel arriving in the market. The plan also drew bipartisan criticism, according to the Associated Press.

Emergency stocks were part of the supply picture
Reuters reported on October 6 that G7 members had agreed to release emergency crude and diesel stocks, another factor easing supply concerns. At that point, the group had not detailed the product-by-product volumes or named the participating countries.
Separately, The National reported on October 2 that EU governments were discussing a French proposal for IEA members to release 50 million barrels of diesel and 50 million barrels of crude. These were proposed releases under discussion, not stocks confirmed as delivered to consumers.

Why geopolitical and shipping risks still mattered
Higher or recovering export flows did not remove the risk of renewed disruption. Reuters reported attacks on Saudi airports, while Dow Jones described elevated shipping risk in the Strait of Hormuz despite improving flows. The possibility of further attacks and interruptions kept uncertainty in the market.
Routes also matter. The National reported that Saudi Arabia partially reopened the East-West pipeline to Yanbu after September attacks and shifted more crude through Hormuz. Alternative infrastructure can provide another way to move oil, but it does not make the region’s shipping routes interchangeable or eliminate exposure to attack.

Shipping costs, insurance, and transport constraints were additional concerns. Dow Jones reported on October 7 that these costs, alongside constrained Persian Gulf and Russian diesel flows, remained relevant even as prices fell. That report described market conditions on that date, not a current forecast. In this setting, news of stronger flows can pull prices down while the cost and risk of getting supplies to buyers limit how far prices ease.
How to read the competing signals
- Crude benchmark versus refined product: Brent and WTI track crude oil. Russian diesel news concerns a refined product with separate supply and transport conditions.
- Announcement versus arrival: A stated supply plan can change expectations before cargoes are confirmed. The October 9 announcement did not establish that Russian diesel had arrived by October 12.
- Flow versus route security: Higher export estimates show more oil moving during specified periods; they do not establish that shipping risks have ended.
- Agreement or proposal versus release: G7 stock-release plans and the French proposal had different levels of detail and status. Neither should be treated as a confirmed volume already delivered to market.
- Intraday quote versus closing price: The cited October 6 and October 12 price figures are intraday observations, not settlement prices.
John Evans, an analyst at oil broker PVM, told Reuters on October 6 that “the assumption of more crude getting through has dampened price fervour … for now.” The qualification is important: prices reflected expectations that flows could improve, alongside risks that remained unresolved.
