Start by locating the failure: NYT Strands may be failing in the Games app, in your browser, during account sign-in, or only when you submit a letter selection. Try Strands in another NYT Games surface and open another NYT game in the same surface. Those comparisons narrow the problem, but they do not prove that there is an outage or identify a particular bug.
For app problems, update the app and your device, force-quit and reopen it, sign out and back in, and reinstall only if the earlier steps fail. For browser access, check cookies, clear cache, verify the account or linked social login, reset the password if necessary, and stop password-manager autofill from inserting old credentials. A word that appears in the grid is not automatically confirmed as a valid Strands answer; the official help material reviewed does not document the game’s answer-validation rules.
First, identify which part of Strands is failing
The fastest troubleshooting path depends on the visible symptom. Before changing settings, record whether Strands is stuck before the puzzle appears, asks you to sign in repeatedly, or opens normally but does not register a selection. Also note whether another NYT game works in the same app or browser.
| What you see | First comparison | What the result can suggest |
|---|---|---|
| Strands spins, stays blank, or will not open in the NYT Games app | Open another NYT game in the app, then try Strands in a browser if practical | If only Strands fails, the problem may be limited to that game or app session. If several games fail, investigate the app, account session, or connection more broadly. |
| The browser returns to a login screen or rejects credentials | Try the same account in a private window or another browser, and check whether cookies are enabled | This points first to account, cookie, cached-session, or autofill problems rather than answer selection. |
| The puzzle loads, but a selected word does not register | Try a slower selection, another input method, or the other platform | This is an input or answer-validation question. Official NYT help pages reviewed here do not establish a Strands-specific rejection bug or publish its acceptance rules. |
| Your progress is missing after changing devices | Check whether you were signed in on the device where you played | Signed-in progress can follow the account; unsigned-in progress is stored locally and may not transfer. |
NYT describes Strands as one of its Games offerings and says many games can be played on the web or in the NYT Games app. Availability on both surfaces makes a cross-platform comparison useful, but the comparison is a diagnostic check, not a guaranteed fix. See the NYT Games subscription and access information.

Use a low-risk scope check before changing anything
- Write down the symptom. For example, note “loading spinner after tapping Strands,” “login returns to the sign-in page,” or “letters highlight but the answer does not submit.” Include the device, operating system, app or browser, and approximate time.
- Try another NYT game in the same place. This separates a Strands-only symptom from a failure affecting the broader Games surface. A working second game does not prove Strands itself is down; it only narrows the scope.
- Try the other surface. If you normally use the app, open NYT Games in a browser. If you normally use a browser, try the app. Do not assume that a result on one platform identifies the cause on the other.
- Check the account state. If the puzzle is visible but progress is absent, verify the account email or sign-in method before starting a new session or clearing local data.
General NYT troubleshooting guidance does not establish a particular Strands outage. Avoid treating a temporary result, a social-media report, or a single failed attempt as proof of a service-wide incident.
If the NYT Games app will not load or respond
The NYT Help Center’s mobile guidance explicitly applies to NYT Games. Follow its sequence from least disruptive to most disruptive. The labels can differ slightly between iOS and Android, but the purpose of each step is the same.
1. Update the Games app and your operating system
Open your device’s app store, find the NYT Games app, and install any available update. Then check the device’s system-update screen and install a pending operating-system update when practical. An old app build or operating system can leave a session unable to start, and updating is reversible and low risk.
2. Force-quit and reopen the app
Close the app from the device’s app switcher rather than merely returning to the home screen. Wait a few seconds, launch the app again, and open Strands. This creates a fresh app process without deleting account data or saved statistics.
3. Sign out and sign in again
Use the account menu in the Games app to log out, close the app, reopen it, and sign in with the same NYT account. This refreshes the session that the app uses to request games and save progress. If you normally use Google, Facebook, or Apple sign-in, use that same linked method instead of creating a different account.
4. Consider clearing the app cache where your device provides that control
The Help Center notes that an outdated or conflicting app cache can interfere with login attempts and says clearing mobile app cache does not affect saved Games streaks or statistics. Device menus vary: Android commonly exposes a cache command under the app’s storage settings, while iOS generally relies on offloading or reinstalling rather than a separate cache button. Do not choose a data-wipe option unless you understand what it removes, and confirm that you know your sign-in details first.
5. Reinstall only after the earlier steps fail
Uninstall the NYT Games app, restart the device if convenient, and install the current version from the official app store. The NYT mobile troubleshooting page says reinstalling will not affect saved Games streaks or statistics. You will still need to sign in again, and any progress that existed only locally while you were unsigned in may not be recoverable.
These app steps are documented by the NYT Help Center’s mobile app troubleshooting guide. The NYT Games app information page also directs users with technical problems to mobile troubleshooting and says support is available from the app’s settings.
If Strands will not open in a browser or keeps asking you to log in
Browser login problems are separate from an answer-selection problem. Work through the checks below before judging whether the puzzle itself is unavailable.
Clear the browser cache and cookies
Use your browser’s privacy or history settings to remove cached files and cookies for NYTimes.com, then close and reopen the browser. Cached session information can conflict with a new login. Clearing cookies may sign you out of other sites, so save any passwords or session information you need before proceeding.
Allow cookies
NYT account access requires the browser to accept cookies. Check the browser’s cookie or site-data controls and allow cookies for NYTimes.com. If you use strict tracking protection, a content blocker, or a privacy extension, temporarily test in a clean window or another browser to determine whether that setting is blocking the login session.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Verify the email and sign-in method
Enter the email address associated with the NYT account and type the password rather than relying on a suggested value. If you may have used another email, try that address. If the account was created or linked through Google, Facebook, or Apple, select the corresponding social-login button instead of entering a separate password.
Reset the password when credentials fail
Use the password-reset link on the NYT sign-in page. Check the spam, junk, and promotions folders for the reset message. If no message arrives, confirm that you are checking the inbox for the exact email address associated with the account and try the reset process again after correcting it.
Test without password-manager autofill
A password manager or browser extension can insert an old email address or password, sometimes without making the error obvious. Disable the password-manager extension temporarily or delete the saved NYT entry, then type the credentials manually. Re-enable the extension after confirming that the account works.
The browser guidance applies to NYTimes.com, including the Games area. Follow the NYT Help Center’s browser login troubleshooting guide. These steps address access and authentication; they do not claim to fix every loading or gameplay issue.
When the puzzle loads but your answer will not register
The official pages reviewed do not publish a Strands-specific rulebook for accepted answers and do not document a known answer-entry defect. Treat the following as diagnostic checks, not confirmed causes or promises that a particular action will work.
Confirm the selection itself
Watch the letters as you drag, tap, or click. Make sure every intended letter is selected in the required order and that the selection ends inside the puzzle area rather than on surrounding controls. If the interface behaves inconsistently, try making one deliberately slow selection instead of several rapid gestures.
Change the input method
On a phone or tablet, try a different finger position or a stylus if one is already available; on a computer, try the mouse or trackpad instead of the method you normally use. The point is to determine whether the visible selection is changing correctly, not to assume that touch, mouse, or connectivity is the cause.
Try the other platform
Open the same puzzle in the browser if the app is failing, or in the app if the browser is failing. If the answer registers on one platform but not the other, record that exact difference for support. It narrows the issue to a surface or session, but it does not by itself identify a software bug.

Do not equate grid membership with answer validity
A word that can be traced through letters in the grid is not automatically established as one of that puzzle’s answers. The material available here does not document Strands’ validation rules, accepted-word list, or how it handles every possible selection. Before reporting a rejected word as a valid answer, check the puzzle’s intended theme and whether the selection is actually one of the answers you are trying to submit.

Compare another game and record the exact behavior
If other NYT games accept input normally, note that Strands alone is affected. If several games fail to respond, describe the broader pattern. Include whether letters highlight, whether a confirmation animation appears, whether the screen freezes, and whether a retry changes anything. This detail is more useful to support than a general statement that “the answer did not work.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why progress can disappear after switching devices
NYT says that signing in saves game progress to your account and allows access across devices. If you play while signed out, progress is stored locally on that device and may be lost if the app is reinstalled, local data is cleared, or you move to another device.
- On the original device, open the account menu and confirm which NYT email or social-login method is active.
- Sign in with that same account on the second device or in the browser.
- Reopen Strands and check the puzzle history or current progress before beginning a new attempt.
- If the original device was unsigned in and its local data has already been removed, do not assume the progress can be restored through the account; the NYT guidance only promises cross-device access for progress associated with a signed-in account.
Cross-device behavior and access details are described on the NYT Games subscription and access page.
Use the result of your tests to choose the next step
| Test result | Next action |
|---|---|
| Strands fails only in the app; browser works | Complete the app update, force-quit, sign-out/sign-in, cache, and reinstall sequence. Report through app settings if the failure remains. |
| Strands fails only in one browser | Clear that browser’s cache and cookies, allow cookies, disable autofill or extensions, and retest in another browser. |
| Several NYT games fail in both surfaces | Document the time, account state, device, and symptoms, then contact NYT support. The comparison suggests a broader access or service issue but does not prove an outage. |
| Only one attempted word is rejected | Check the letter path and intended answer, then try a slower or different input method. Report the exact puzzle behavior if the issue persists. |
| Progress exists on one device but not another | Confirm that both devices use the same signed-in NYT account. Unsigned-in local progress may not transfer. |
How to report an unresolved problem
Use the in-app Report a Bug or Send App Feedback route for an NYT Games app problem, or use NYT support from the app’s settings. For a browser issue, retain the browser name and version, device and operating system, whether cookies are enabled, and the account sign-in method.
Send a reproducible description rather than only saying that Strands is broken. Include:
- Whether the failure occurs in the app, browser, or both.
- Whether another NYT game works in the same place.
- The exact screen where loading stops or the login loop begins.
- For an answer issue, the input method, the letters selected, and what appeared afterward.
- Whether you were signed in and whether the problem followed you to another device.
- The approximate date and time, without including your password or other sensitive account information.
There is no documented physical product, router purchase, or repair utility established as a fix for this Strands problem. The supported path is software, account, input, and support troubleshooting.
Quick Recap
Keep future sessions easier to recover
- Stay signed in when you want progress available across devices, and remember which email or social-login method is linked to the account.
- Keep the NYT Games app and device operating system current.
- Allow cookies for NYTimes.com if you play in a browser.
- Review password-manager entries after changing a password so old autofill data does not recreate a login failure.
- When an answer behaves unexpectedly, capture the exact sequence before reinstalling or clearing local data.
