Check that the hint page and your NYT Strands board show the same date and game number. Daily hint pages can refer to a different board than the one you have open, and “today” alone may not identify the same puzzle. If both identifiers match but the hints still differ, the reason is unverified; don’t assume it is an app bug or an NYT content error.
How to find the right Strands puzzle
- Read the date on your board. Compare it with the date printed on the hint page, not just the page’s publication date or a label such as “today.”
- Compare the game number. Match the number shown for your board to the number on the hint page. Daily pages and archives commonly use both date and number to identify a puzzle. Strands Today explains the use of dates and puzzle numbers; Xfire’s archive is an example of a dated puzzle archive.
- Open a page for that exact board. If either identifier differs, use a hint page or archive entry that matches both. Be aware that an external page may reveal spoilers, including answers.
Why different pages may seem to disagree
The hint page is for another date or game number
This is the first thing to rule out. A page’s “today” may be attached to a date or puzzle number that does not match the board you are viewing. Secondary sites describe when new daily puzzles appear differently: for example, TechRadar’s October 10, 2026 page identifies that day’s board as game #951 and says a new puzzle appears at midnight in the reader’s time zone. That is TechRadar’s description, not verified official NYT guidance. The NYT Strands game page could not be accessed for confirmation here, so treat claims about the official reset schedule cautiously and rely on the date and number displayed for your board.
“Hint” means something different in the game and on a guide site
An in-game hint and an external hint page may not reveal the same kind of help. Strands Today describes the in-game hint as highlighting letters that form an unfound theme word. External guides may instead provide a theme clue, staged clues, or answers. Compare like with like, and avoid opening an answer section if you want to preserve the puzzle’s challenge. What if the date and game number both match?
If both identifiers agree and the content still does not, the available sources do not establish why. Confirm that the external page is for the same board and that you are comparing the same kind of help. Beyond that, the cause remains unverified; there is not enough evidence here to attribute the mismatch to caching, an app problem, or an NYT error.

How much confidence to place in reset-time claims
Some secondary pages discuss local-midnight or time-zone behavior, and individual community posts also speculate about time zones. Those claims are not official confirmation of Strands’ reset rules. A Reddit thread, for example, contains readers’ comments about people seeing a recent thread and overlooking time zones; those remarks are anecdotes, not authoritative guidance. The practical check is still the date and game number shown for the board and the hint page.
