NYT Strands hints are deliberately partial. You earn one by finding three valid words that are not part of the day’s theme, then the game highlights the letters of an unfound theme word on the grid. The letters appear progressively, so you still have to recognize the word and trace its path. A hint directs you to the answer without simply printing it for you.
What a Strands hint actually does
Strands is a word-search path puzzle. Instead of displaying a list of answers, it gives you a theme clue and a grid of letters. Your task is to find words related to that theme and connect each word through adjacent cells.
The hint system follows the same design principle: it gives location and letter information while leaving a final solving step. When a hint is available, it highlights the cells belonging to one theme word you have not found. The highlighted letters appear progressively rather than being presented immediately as a typed answer. Once enough of the pattern is visible, you can identify the word and trace it yourself.

That is why pressing Hint does not always feel like receiving an answer. The interface is showing you where a word is and which letters it uses; your job is still to read the sequence, recognize its connection to the clue and draw the correct path.

How you earn a hint
Find three words outside the theme
You do not begin each puzzle with an unlimited hint button. First, submit three valid words that are not among the themed answers. These are commonly called bonus words. They must be accepted by the game as legitimate entries; random strings or words that do not meet the game’s criteria will not advance the counter.
Strands Today, an independent fan site unaffiliated with The New York Times, specifies that the three bonus words must contain at least four letters. A 2026 academic description of Strands independently summarizes the trigger as three valid non-solution words. Because the sources describe the mechanic at different levels of detail, the practical rule is to look for three accepted, non-theme words and watch the in-game progress indicator.
Activate the earned hint
After the third qualifying word, the hint control becomes available. Activating it selects a hidden theme word and begins revealing its letters on the board. The game does not ask you to type a complete answer into a separate box. The information is embedded in the same grid where you will solve the puzzle.
Stop when you recognize the word
The reveal is progressive. You can often identify the answer before every letter has been emphasized. At that point, stop the reveal and trace the word through the highlighted cells. This preserves part of the discovery process and avoids exposing more of the solution than you need.

Why the answer is not shown as text
A text answer would remove both major parts of Strands’ challenge: recognizing a thematic word and finding its route through the grid. The progressive highlight preserves those tasks. You must interpret the letters, determine how they fit the theme and select them in order.
The board can contain several plausible letter sequences, and the same theme may admit synonyms or related terms. Showing cells rather than a finished word gives you a constrained clue without deciding every interpretation for you. This is an inference from the documented progressive-highlighting behavior, not a quoted statement from a New York Times representative.
The exact visual timing or number of interactions can change with the game interface. Available descriptions establish that letters are highlighted progressively; they do not establish a universal number of taps or a fixed reveal animation for every version.
Theme words and the spangram are different
Hints target ordinary theme answers
The hint system is described as revealing a theme word that you have not yet found. It does not explain the theme clue in plain language, and it does not automatically select the day’s spangram.

The spangram connects the puzzle
The spangram is a separate element of the puzzle. The academic description of Strands characterizes it as a word or phrase that connects opposite sides of the letter matrix and reveals the day’s theme. Because it serves as the thematic bridge, finding it can make the remaining answers easier, but it is still a distinct entry.
If you are expecting a hint to expose the spangram, that expectation explains much of the confusion. A highlighted ordinary theme word may help you infer the category, while the spangram still has to be solved through the grid. The independent explainer’s account specifically says the hint reveals theme words, not the spangram.
How the highlighted path works on the grid
Eight-way adjacency
Letters may connect horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A path can turn as it travels, so a word does not have to be a straight line. The game’s board description treats all eight surrounding cells as possible neighbors.
No repeated cell within one word
You cannot use the same tile twice in a single answer. A route can wind around other letters, but each cell contributes at most once to that word.

Why location matters
Seeing the highlighted cells tells you more than seeing a list of letters. It shows the route you must trace and distinguishes the target from nearby decoy sequences. Read the highlighted cells in their connected order, then drag or select them as you normally would for a found word.

Step-by-step: using a hint without wasting it
- Read the theme clue again. Before spending the hint, identify the kind of relationship the answers may have: objects, actions, names, categories or phrases. The clue is the game’s primary guide.
- Search for bonus words. Try ordinary words that fit the board but not the theme. Submit only words you can trace through adjacent cells. Continue until three are accepted.
- Confirm that the hint is unlocked. The game should make the hint control available after the qualifying words. If it is still inactive, one of your submissions may have been rejected or counted as a themed answer.
- Activate the hint. The board will emphasize cells belonging to an unfound theme word. Watch the reveal rather than immediately guessing from the clue alone.
- Read the highlighted sequence. Follow the cells in their connected order. Look for a recognizable word and check whether it belongs to the theme.
- Trace the answer. Select the highlighted path as you would any other answer. A hint points to the target, but the game still expects you to enter it.
- Use the remaining information strategically. Once one answer is identified, use its meaning to narrow the theme and search for the spangram or other entries without immediately requesting another reveal.
What using a hint does to your statistics
Strands Today reports that using a hint changes the puzzle’s “solved without hints” statistic. The same account says a hint does not end your daily streak or change the puzzle count. This is a description from an independent explainer, not a directly verified official policy statement, so treat the wording of the current interface as authoritative if it changes.
In practical terms, using a hint is a trade-off rather than a failure state. You can preserve progress toward the daily puzzle and keep your streak, but the game may no longer classify that solve as completed without hints. If a personal goal is to maintain a clean no-hint record, keep searching for bonus words and theme connections before activating the control.
A spoiler-light solving strategy
Start with the clue, not the hint meter
Because the theme is the only printed word-level guidance, reread it whenever you stall. Brainstorm several interpretations instead of committing to the first obvious category. A broad clue may refer to a shared phrase, a type of object or a word that commonly follows another word.

Use bonus words as a deliberate search
Bonus words are not merely a tax before help arrives. Looking for them forces you to inspect unused regions of the grid and learn which letters form natural paths. Try common nouns, verbs and adjectives of at least four letters, especially in corners and along edges you have not examined.
Look for the spangram independently
Since the hint is not designed to reveal the spangram, search for a long thematic concept that could connect opposite sides of the board. Finding that bridge often clarifies what the other answers have in common. Do not assume the longest-looking path is automatically the spangram; it must fit the theme and the game’s path rules.
Use the hint at the right uncertainty level
If you know the category but cannot locate one word, a hint is efficient because it supplies the route. If you do not understand the clue at all, the highlight may be harder to interpret. In that situation, first inspect your found words and the board for a possible spangram or shared phrase, then use the hint when a cell-level nudge will be useful.

- “I found three words, but no answer was printed.” That is expected. The reward is a progressive cell highlight, not a text list of the solution.
- “The hint gave me a word that is not in the theme.” Check whether you are reading the highlighted cells in connected order. The system is intended to identify an unfound theme word; a misread diagonal or turn can create a false sequence.
- “The hint did not show the spangram.” The spangram is separate from the ordinary theme-word hint. Search for the spanning thematic entry yourself.
- “My streak disappeared after using help.” The independent explanation of the current mechanic says a hint changes the no-hint statistic but does not break the daily streak or alter the puzzle count. Verify the live game display if your account shows different behavior.
- “The game will not count my bonus word.” Make sure the path uses adjacent cells, does not reuse a tile, and forms a valid word. A word that is already a theme answer may not count as a bonus word.
- “I cannot tell where the word starts.” Follow the highlighted cells one by one and look for the route that makes a continuous eight-way path. The hint identifies the cells, but you still need to determine the readable order.
What is documented—and what is not
Descriptions from Strands Today and Strands.Game agree on the core interaction: three valid non-theme words unlock assistance, and the assistance highlights a hidden theme word. The 2026 paper “Man, These New York Times Games Are Hard! A Computational Perspective” provides independent corroboration of the three-word trigger, highlighted letters, eight-way adjacency and the spangram’s role.
No published statistic establishes how often players use hints, how much hints improve solving success or how many seconds a hint saves. Those figures should not be inferred from the mechanic. Likewise, no fixed tap count or universal animation schedule is established by the available descriptions.
