If NYT Connections marks your four words wrong, the most likely explanation is not that the words have no relationship. Connections accepts only the puzzle setter’s intended group. The New York Times says every puzzle has exactly one solution and deliberately includes words that can fit more than one category. A defensible connection can therefore be a decoy. A second possibility is a genuine submission or platform problem. Check your grouping against the entire 16-word board first; if the result still appears to be a registration error, verify that you are using an official NYT platform and report it through the game’s Feedback menu.
What a “wrong” Connections answer actually means
Each daily Connections board contains 16 words. Your task is to divide them into four groups of four, with one shared connection per group. The game is not judging whether four selected words can be linked by any reasonable interpretation. It is checking whether those four words match the single solution chosen for that puzzle.
The NYT Help Center describes the design this way: “Each puzzle has exactly one solution and is meant to be tricky by having words that could fit into multiple categories.” That sentence explains most apparently unfair rejections. You may have found a real association, but not the association the board is built around.

There are two different situations to separate:

Do not treat a rejection as proof that the words are unrelated. Treat it as evidence that your proposed category does not match the puzzle’s intended partition—or, less commonly, that the submission did not register correctly.

Why a genuine connection can still be the wrong group
Connections is built around overlapping meanings
Setters choose words that can be interpreted in several ways: a word may describe a physical object, appear in a familiar phrase, name a title, or belong to a broad semantic class. Four such words can form a convincing pattern while one of them is needed in a different, more specific category. The game’s one-solution rule gives priority to that complete intended arrangement.
A useful test is whether your explanation is precise and uniform. If one word fits only through a pun, another through a phrase, and a third through a broad association, you may be combining unrelated senses. Even when all four links are technically defensible, the set can still be the red herring.
The whole board matters more than an isolated quartet
Connections is a partitioning problem. A proposed group is credible only if the other 12 words can still be divided into three complete groups of four. Selecting a tempting word can strand another category or leave an awkward trio. That leftover pattern is often the evidence that your first group was not intended.
The 2025 COLING paper “NYT-Connections: A Deceptively Simple Text Classification Task that Stumps System-1 Thinkers” documents this type of misdirection. In its example, “Normal,” “Standard,” and “Benchmark” invite a three-word “Status Quo” idea. However, “Normal” belongs with “Dry,” “Combination,” and “Oily” in the intended “Skin Types” group. The apparent status-quo connection is not nonsense; it is simply not the board’s selected solution.
Color signals difficulty, not correctness
The game uses colors to indicate relative difficulty: yellow is the easiest category and purple is the trickiest, according to the NYT Help Center. A yellow-looking idea is not automatically valid, and a purple category is not required to use obscure trivia. Color is a difficulty cue after a solution is established; it does not validate a submitted set.

A step-by-step method for correcting a rejected group
- Restate the category in one exact phrase. Write or say what all four words have in common. “Things associated with X” is often too broad. Prefer a specific relationship such as “skin types” or “words that precede a particular term.” If you cannot state one consistent rule, release the group.
- Check every word’s meaning and role. Look for a word that is doing different work from the others. A shared spelling pattern, a common phrase, and a topical association may look similar at a glance but represent different mechanisms.
- Inspect the unused 12 words. Try to form three complete groups without using any selected word. If you can identify a clean four-word category that requires one of your choices, your original set is probably the decoy.
- Mark ambiguous words as provisional. Words with multiple meanings, title references, abbreviations, or phrase potential should remain uncommitted until the rest of the board supports them. Do not lock an ambiguous word into the first category you notice.
- Search for a tighter alternative. When two categories compete for one word, prefer the interpretation that gives four equally strong members and leaves a coherent remainder. A broad association that works for three words is weaker than a specific category that works for four.
- Use the game’s mistake allowance carefully. If you have a remaining-mistakes indicator, avoid repeatedly submitting speculative groups. Each guess should test a complete hypothesis supported by the board, not merely confirm that four words can be connected somehow.
- Resubmit only after the partition works. Before tapping Submit, mentally assign all 16 words to four groups. You do not need to know every category’s wording, but you should be able to explain why your chosen four belong together and why the alternatives fit elsewhere.
This process follows the official one-solution rule and the documented decoy example. It is a reasoning method, not a guarantee that every difficult board can be solved without mistakes.
How to tell a red herring from a technical failure
The same “wrong” message can describe two very different events. Use the pattern of the problem rather than assuming your device is faulty.

The NYT Help Center does not publish a universal browser, network, cache-clearing, reinstall, or account-reset procedure for rejected Connections answers. Those steps might be appropriate in a particular case, but there is no official basis for promising that one of them fixes every submission problem. Avoid changing several variables at once; otherwise you will not know whether the issue was logical or technical.
Use an official NYT platform before reporting a problem
The Help Center lists Connections in the NYT Games app, on the Connections website, at nytimes.com/theathletic, and in the News app. The daily game is free to play. Creating or using a NYT account is recommended so progress can be retained across devices, but ordinary daily play does not require a subscription.
If you switch between devices, sign in with the same account and confirm that the puzzle date and board match. A board opened in a different product or session can make a correct recollection appear inconsistent with the current state. The daily game is released at midnight in your timezone, according to the Help Center, so a date boundary can also explain why two devices are showing different daily boards.

How to report a suspected Connections submission problem
Once you have checked the board logic and confirmed that you are using an official NYT product, use the documented feedback path:
- Open Connections in the NYT Games app or on the Connections website.
- Select the question-mark icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select Feedback.
- Submit the form with a clear description of what you selected and what the game displayed.
Include the puzzle date, the platform (Games app, website, or News app), your device or browser, the exact four words, and whether the board lost selections or otherwise behaved abnormally. Do not include account passwords or other sensitive information. A precise report helps support staff distinguish an intended rejection from a registration defect.
The official instructions identify this feedback route but do not promise a particular response time or a specific technical remedy. If the same behavior continues, preserve screenshots or a short screen recording when possible and add those details to the report rather than repeatedly submitting guesses.
Optional Connections features and what they require
Most players need only the daily board. The Help Center also describes two optional features with separate access requirements.

These features are not required to solve the current free daily puzzle. If a Bot analysis or archive board looks different from your current game, first verify that you are viewing the same puzzle date and are signed into the intended account.

What the published study does—and does not—show
The 2025 COLING paper assembled a corpus of 358 archived daily Connections puzzles. That number describes the paper’s dataset, not the number of puzzles currently available in the NYT archive and not a count of all puzzles ever published.
In an experiment using 100 puzzles selected around median difficulty and three human evaluators, the paper reports mean scores of 39.33% for “One Try,” 56.0% for “No Hints,” and 60.67% for “Full Hints.” These percentages belong to that study’s participants, puzzle sample, and scoring setup. They are not estimates of the average NYT player’s performance, nor do they measure how often the NYT app rejects technically correct answers.
The NYT Help Center provides rules and feature descriptions but no general statistic for rejected submissions, app errors, or player success rates. Any claim that a certain percentage of answers is wrongly marked, or that a particular device causes the problem, would go beyond the available evidence.

Stopping after finding four related words
Finding a relationship is only half the task. Before submitting, reserve each selected word mentally and solve the remaining board. A category that cannot coexist with three other complete groups is not the intended answer, even when its wording sounds elegant.

Phrase-based links are especially tempting because they feel exact. Check whether one of the words also has a stronger role in a concrete category, title set, spelling pattern, or other repeated structure. The phrase is evidence, not proof, until the complete partition works.

Assuming the easiest-looking color must be right
Yellow and purple describe relative difficulty, not a permission system. A visually obvious yellow candidate can be a deliberate trap, while a less familiar purple category can be the intended group.
Changing technical settings before checking the board
Clearing data, reinstalling an app, or switching browsers cannot make a decoy category become the official solution. Use technical troubleshooting only when you have signs of a registration or display problem, and report the issue through the NYT’s Feedback menu when the official guidance does not resolve it.
Assuming every alternative should be accepted
Connections is not an open-ended association game. The one-solution rule means that multiple defensible interpretations can exist while only one four-group arrangement earns acceptance. The goal is to discover the setter’s partition, not to prove that your alternative is linguistically possible.

- If the four words are rejected but the board remains stable: treat the result as a category or decoy problem and re-solve the full board.
- If your set leaves an awkward trio or steals a word from a cleaner group: undo it and test the competing category.
- If the game loses selections, freezes, or rejects a clearly intended set on an official platform: document the puzzle and use question mark → Feedback.
- If you are unsure which platform or date you are viewing: sign in, confirm the product, and check the timezone-based daily release before comparing results.
The practical fix is therefore two-stage: solve for the unique intended grouping, then escalate only behavior that looks like a genuine submission or platform defect. That distinction prevents a plausible red herring from being mistaken for a broken game.
