null is more than an empty or special value: in C#, it means a reference points to no object. That distinction matters because trying to use the missing object can fail at runtime. Understanding what null represents—and how it differs from an empty string, zero, or an explicit optional result—makes it easier to design and handle absence safely.
What is a null reference?
A reference is how a program refers to an object. In C#, a null reference points to no object. The null literal is the default value for reference-type variables; ordinary value types, such as numeric types, cannot hold null unless declared as nullable. See Microsoft’s C# reference for the null keyword.
Null is therefore not an object with blank contents. It is distinct from an empty string (""), the number zero, or an empty collection: those are values or objects that exist. A null reference has no referent to inspect or use.

What happens when you dereference null?
Dereferencing means using a reference to access an object—for example, reading a property or calling an instance method. If a C# reference is null, an operation such as name.Length cannot read a length from an object because there is no object there. The runtime throws a NullReferenceException. Microsoft describes this failure in its guide to null safety in C#.
Java has a comparable runtime failure, NullPointerException. Oracle’s documentation lists causes including calling an instance method or accessing a field through a null reference: Java SE 26 NullPointerException API.
The exception often appears far from where the null originated. A variable may be declared to hold an object, but at runtime it can still be null—for example, because a method returned no object or data was absent. The operation that dereferences it is where the failure becomes visible.

Why “no value” can mean different things
Absence can describe distinct states, and the type or API should make clear which one is intended:
- No referenced object: a reference is null, so there is no object to use.
- An optional value: a value such as a score may or may not have been supplied. In C#, a nullable value type such as
int?can represent either an integer or no integer. - No method result: a method may have no result to return. An API can represent this explicitly rather than relying on a null reference.
These states are related, but they are not interchangeable. An empty string is still a string; zero is still a number. If absence is valid—for example, an optional database field or a setting that has not been supplied—make its meaning part of the data model or API contract. If an object is required, null instead signals that an expectation has been violated.
How C# makes null handling clearer
C# offers language features that help express and handle possible absence. They can reduce accidental dereferences, but they do not change the runtime behavior of a null reference.

Check before using a reference
A branch makes the absent case explicit:
if (name is not null)
{
Console.WriteLine(name.Length);
}
The member access runs only when name refers to an object.

Use conditional access for a member
The null-conditional operator ?. accesses a member only if the reference is non-null:
int? length = name?.Length;
If name is null, the expression produces a nullable result with no value rather than attempting to read Length.
Choose a fallback when absence is acceptable
The null-coalescing operator ?? supplies a fallback for a null reference:
string displayName = name ?? "unknown";
This is appropriate when the fallback is meaningful for the application; it should not conceal a missing object that the program actually requires.
Use nullable reference annotations to communicate intent
C# nullable-reference annotations let code express whether a reference is expected to be present and enable compiler analysis and warnings for some risky patterns. They are a compile-time feature: they do not create different runtime reference types or prevent every null from occurring. A dereference of null can still fail at runtime.

How Java Optional represents an absent result
Java’s Optional<T> is a container that either holds a non-null value or is empty. Oracle says it is primarily intended for method return types when there is a clear need to represent “no result” and using null could lead to errors. The Java SE 17 Optional API documents operations including isPresent, ifPresent, orElse, and orElseThrow.
For example, Optional.ofNullable(value) produces an empty Optional if value is null. By contrast, Optional.of(value) requires a non-null value. The container makes the possible absence visible to callers, but the Optional variable itself should not be null. Optional does not make every null impossible; it gives an API a more explicit way to represent a result that may be absent.
Choosing a representation for absence
Start by asking whether the thing is allowed to be absent and what absence means. If a required object is missing, identify where it should have been created or supplied and report that violated expectation clearly. If absence is a normal outcome, represent it in the relevant type or API contract and handle it deliberately at the call site.
Recommended Free Tools
In C#, that can mean a nullable value type, nullable-reference annotations, a null check, conditional access, or a fallback where one is genuinely appropriate. In Java, an API that may have no result can use an Optional return value. In either language, these mechanisms help make intent visible; they do not eliminate the need to reason about null and missing data.
