Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
If npm install or npm run build ends with only Killed, the operating system or the VPS container usually sent the process a SIGKILL because it ran out of memory. It is normally not an npm-designed error. Confirm that diagnosis in the kernel or cgroup logs first, then free memory, add permitted swap, tune Node’s heap only when appropriate, reduce the build’s peak usage, or move the build to a larger machine.
What a bare “Killed” line means
The shell is reporting a signal, not an npm explanation
A shell prints Killed when the command’s process disappears after receiving SIGKILL (signal 9). SIGKILL cannot be caught or handled by Node.js, so npm has no opportunity to print a friendly stack trace. The shell therefore shows a one-word symptom rather than the reason the kernel chose to terminate the process.
Recommended Free Tools
On Linux, the most common reason during a dependency install or JavaScript build is the out-of-memory (OOM) path. When available memory is exhausted, the kernel’s OOM killer selects a process to terminate. Its decision is influenced by each process’s oom_score and oom_score_adj; a high score makes a process a more likely victim. The process that dies is not necessarily the one that consumed all memory: the kernel is trying to keep the system alive.
A VPS can impose a second, smaller ceiling
Virtual private servers often run workloads inside a Linux control group (cgroup). With cgroup v2, an OOM event inside a cgroup is contained by that group. Your VPS, a container, or a service unit can therefore hit its configured memory limit even when the physical host still has free RAM. In that case, the cgroup can kill Node or npm and the host-wide free -h output may look less alarming than expected.

The practical distinction is important: adding RAM to the host, or stopping an unrelated process outside the cgroup, cannot raise a provider-enforced limit. You must reduce the process’s peak, change the cgroup or VPS size, or build somewhere else.
Confirm the failure mechanism before changing settings
Do not begin by adding a random --max-old-space-size value. First establish whether the kernel, a cgroup, or V8 itself stopped the job. Reproduce the failure once while collecting the following information.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →1. Record the software and resource context
- Record the versions and platform:
node -v,npm -v, your Linux distribution and release, the VPS’s advertised RAM, and any container or service memory limit. - Check how Node and npm were installed and whether they are on a supported, maintained release. An obsolete runtime can create unrelated installation failures that look like memory trouble.
- Note what else is running at the same time: a database, web server, compiler, backup, log processor or another deployment. Peak usage is the sum of concurrent work, not just npm’s own process.
2. Watch RAM, swap and process growth
free -h
swapon --show
top
# or, if installed
htop
Run free -h before starting and during the install or build. In top or htop, watch the resident memory (RSS) of the Node process and the total used memory. A sudden climb followed by termination is consistent with an OOM event; a host with little free RAM but a healthy swap area may still survive a short spike, albeit more slowly.
From a diagnostic Node script, process.memoryUsage() reports RSS, heap totals, external memory and array-buffer usage. process.constrainedMemory() reports a memory limit when Node can detect one. RSS includes the JavaScript heap, native allocations, loaded libraries, npm overhead and the Node runtime, so it can be much larger than the V8 heap alone.
3. Read the kernel log immediately after the kill
dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'out of memory|killed process|oom'
journalctl -k -b
Look for an OOM record naming node, npm or the service that launched the build. A line describing a killed process, an exhausted allocation or an OOM invocation confirms that Linux made the decision. On systems where an unprivileged user cannot read dmesg, the same evidence is often available through journalctl -k -b with suitable privileges.
If the build runs under a systemd service, inspect that unit as well:

journalctl -u <unit>
Service-level memory limits can terminate a process even when an interactive shell on the same VPS appears healthy.

4. Inspect cgroup v2 counters when a limit is involved
In the relevant cgroup, read the memory.events file. The exact path depends on the provider and service layout, but the file contains counters such as oom and oom_kill. An increment in oom_kill after your reproduction is strong evidence that the cgroup, rather than npm’s own error handling, killed a member.
cat /sys/fs/cgroup/memory.events
On a delegated service or container, use that unit’s or container’s cgroup path instead of assuming the root path above. Save the counters before and after the test if they are already nonzero; the change is more informative than the absolute value.
5. Distinguish an OS kill from a V8 heap failure
| What you see | Likely mechanism | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|
Only Killed, followed by a shell prompt |
External SIGKILL, commonly the Linux or cgroup OOM killer | dmesg -T, journalctl -k -b, and cgroup memory.events |
FATAL ERROR: ... JavaScript heap out of memory with a Node stack or V8 trace |
V8 reached its configured old-generation heap limit | Node’s stderr output and the value supplied through --max-old-space-size |
| npm error text, exit code and a JavaScript stack without an OOM log | An npm, package, network, permission or script failure | npm’s full log and the package script that failed |
These mechanisms can occur in sequence. Raising V8’s heap limit may remove a V8 error but can make an OS kill more likely if the VPS has no spare memory. Conversely, a low heap cap can cause a V8 failure even when the operating system has RAM available.

Why npm reaches the limit on a small VPS
Dependency installation is a peak-memory workload
During installation npm must parse manifests and lockfiles, resolve or validate dependency trees, unpack archives, run lifecycle scripts and sometimes compile native add-ons. Several stages overlap. Temporary extraction data, package metadata, compiler processes and caches can coexist with the Node process, producing a peak far above the final size of node_modules.
Using a lockfile improves repeatability but does not make a large dependency graph free. A project with many packages, native modules or post-install scripts can still exceed a 1 GB or 2 GB machine during its highest-pressure phase.
Build tools add their own workers and allocations
Bundlers, transpilers, type checkers, minifiers and test runners may create worker processes or hold large intermediate graphs. Their native components allocate memory outside V8’s managed old-generation heap. That is why a heap number that looks safe on paper can still leave the kernel with too little headroom.
Concurrent services consume the memory npm needs
A production VPS may already be running a database, reverse proxy, application workers, monitoring agents and a backup job. Starting an npm build during a traffic spike or database operation can push total usage over the limit. If all services share one cgroup, the group’s total matters; if they are separate, the group containing Node can still have its own ceiling.

Swap changes latency, not the amount of physical RAM
Swap gives the kernel a slower place to move inactive pages, allowing a short-lived allocation spike to survive. It can make an install dramatically slower and cannot compensate for a provider’s hard memory ceiling. A cgroup may limit swap as well as RAM, so a swap file on the host does not automatically help a constrained container.
Fixes, in the order that usually works
1. Free memory before tuning Node
- Stop unused services and worker processes for the duration of the install or build.
- Do not run a database migration, compiler, image-processing job and npm build simultaneously unless the VPS has measured headroom for all of them.
- Schedule builds away from traffic and backup peaks.
- Close duplicate shells or deployment jobs that may be installing the same project concurrently.
After each change, repeat free -h and the kernel-log check. npm’s own troubleshooting guidance recognizes that practical concurrency and resource-related races can produce failures; updating to a current stable Node and npm release is a sensible first check, but it cannot overcome a hard memory limit.
2. Add swap when the provider permits it
First verify whether swap already exists:
swapon --show
If the VPS permits a swap file and you have administrative access, a typical Linux sequence is:
sudo fallocate -l 2G /swapfile
sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
sudo mkswap /swapfile
sudo swapon /swapfile
swapon --show
Use a size appropriate to the host and provider policy; the example is not a guarantee that a 2 GB file is available or desirable on every plan. To make a permitted swap file persistent, add an entry for it to /etc/fstab according to your distribution’s conventions, then verify after a reboot. Monitor performance: heavy swapping can turn a build from minutes into an hour and can create sustained disk pressure.
Linux’s vm.swappiness setting influences how readily the kernel moves pages to swap, but changing it is not a substitute for evidence. If the cgroup or provider forbids swap, or its memory-plus-swap limit is already exhausted, this remedy will not prevent the kill.
3. Apply a Node heap cap only with measured headroom
Node exposes V8’s old-generation limit through --max-old-space-size=SIZE, where SIZE is in megabytes. For a very small host, you can test a cap through the environment:
export NODE_OPTIONS=--max-old-space-size=512
npm ci
# or
npm run build
The value must leave room for the operating system, npm itself, native modules, child processes and every other service. A cap that is too low simply changes the symptom to FATAL ERROR: ... JavaScript heap out of memory. A cap that is too high allows V8 to compete with the kernel and can make an OS-level SIGKILL more likely.

Node’s command-line documentation gives a 2 GiB machine as an example where 1536 MB may be considered, leaving roughly 512 MB for other uses and avoiding unnecessary swapping. Treat that as an illustration, not a universal setting: a VPS running a database or multiple application workers needs more reserve, while an isolated build cgroup may have a different limit.
Measure the peak RSS while testing several values. Keep the smallest cap that allows the workload to complete reliably, and remove the environment variable from unrelated production commands if it was only intended for a build.
4. Reduce dependency and build pressure
- Commit and maintain a lockfile so every build resolves the same dependency graph.
- Use
npm ciin automated or clean builds. It installs from the lockfile and avoids an extra dependency-resolution step caused by an out-of-date or absent installation tree. - For a production runtime that does not need tooling packages, install with
npm ci --omit=devor the equivalent supported npm option. Do this only after confirming that the application does not require a development dependency at runtime. - Run only the required build stages. Disable optional test, documentation or analysis jobs during a constrained deployment, and run them in CI instead.
- Check package lifecycle scripts and native compilation. A post-install script may be the actual peak rather than npm’s resolver; run it separately when you need to identify the offender.
These steps reduce or stabilize peak demand; they do not make a workload fit under a fixed limit if its minimum peak is still larger than that limit.
5. Build on a temporary larger machine and deploy the artifact
If the VPS is intended only to serve the application, move the memory-intensive install and build to a CI runner or temporary builder with sufficient RAM. Publish the compiled artifact and production dependencies, then transfer them to the small VPS. Keep the Node version, operating-system architecture and native-module ABI compatible with the runtime machine; a native module compiled for a different environment may fail after deployment.
This approach also makes deployments reproducible: the build environment can be recorded, logs retained and failures retried without disrupting the production host. It does not remove the need to size the runtime for its own traffic and application memory.
6. Resize the VPS or change the memory boundary
When kernel or cgroup logs show that the workload’s measured peak genuinely exceeds the available limit, a larger instance is the durable fix. If only a service unit is constrained, raise that unit’s allowed memory where your operating model permits. If the provider’s plan imposes the ceiling, select a higher-memory plan or use a separate builder. Do not rely on swap or a heap flag to defeat a limit enforced below your process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between a heap cap, swap, a builder and a larger VPS
| Remedy | Peak-memory effect | Speed and reliability | Best fit | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free headroom and avoid concurrency | Removes competing allocations without changing the build | Usually fastest and free | A host where other services are consuming the spike | May not help if npm alone exceeds the limit |
| Node heap cap | Restricts V8 old-generation growth | Low cost; can fail if set below the workload | A build with an oversized JavaScript heap and measured non-heap reserve | Native memory and child processes remain; an overly high cap can invite an OS kill |
| Swap | Absorbs short-lived inactive-page spikes | Inexpensive but potentially very slow | A provider that permits swap and a workload with brief peaks | Cannot bypass a cgroup/provider ceiling and may cause disk thrashing |
| Temporary or CI builder | Moves the peak away from production | Predictable and reproducible; incurs builder cost | A small runtime VPS whose builds need substantially more memory | Requires artifact handling and compatible runtime dependencies |
| Larger VPS or higher cgroup limit | Raises the actual ceiling | Most predictable; recurring cost | A workload whose minimum peak is consistently too high | Higher monthly spend and possible migration work |
Make the decision using six facts: the measured peak, whether swap is permitted, build speed under swap, how reproducible a CI build would be, the recurring cost of more memory, and whether the limit is host-wide or cgroup-specific.

Practical guidance for 1 GB and 2 GB VPS plans
On a 1 GB VPS
Assume that only a fraction of nominal RAM is available to npm. The kernel, SSH session, web server, monitoring agent and any database need memory before Node starts. Stop nonessential services, confirm whether the provider allows swap, and watch RSS rather than relying on the advertised total. A 512 MB heap cap can be a useful experiment, but it is not a promise that a modern dependency graph will build successfully; npm overhead, native modules and child processes still need room.
If the build still reaches the limit after concurrency is removed and permitted swap is active, build elsewhere or resize instead of repeatedly lowering the heap. A lower cap cannot reduce the memory required by native tools or by a dependency graph that must be held in memory.
On a 2 GB VPS
Two gigabytes gives more room but does not guarantee success. A database, application workers and a compiler can consume most of it before npm starts. Node’s documentation uses 1536 MB as an example old-generation setting on a 2 GiB machine, specifically to leave memory for other uses and avoid swapping; on a shared VPS, choose a smaller value if your measurements show that other services need the reserve.
For recurring builds, compare the time and reliability of local swap with the cost of a temporary builder. If the production process is stable but deployment-time builds are not, moving only the build is usually less disruptive than permanently enlarging the runtime.
Prevent the next deployment from failing silently
Capture a small resource record for every build
- Node and npm versions, Linux distribution, architecture and the commit or lockfile revision.
- VPS RAM, cgroup memory limit and swap status from
free -handswapon --show. - Peak Node RSS and the output of
process.memoryUsage()when you can instrument the build. - Kernel OOM lines from
journalctl -k -band the before/after values in cgroupmemory.events. - Which services were running concurrently and which npm script was active when memory peaked.
Make the build deterministic
Use a committed lockfile and npm ci in CI or clean deployment environments. Keep build and runtime stages separate where practical, and omit development dependencies only in the final runtime stage. A deterministic artifact lets you compare memory peaks between commits instead of debugging a changing dependency tree.
Alert on the cause, not just the exit code
An alert that says “deployment failed” is less useful than one that includes Node RSS, available memory, swap activity, kernel OOM messages and the cgroup’s oom_kill counter. These signals distinguish an application regression from a provider limit and tell you whether a heap cap, scheduling change or more memory is the appropriate next action.
A concise recovery checklist
- Reproduce the command once and save its complete output.
- Record
node -v,npm -v, VPS RAM, cgroup limits and swap status. - Watch
free -h,swapon --showand process RSS during the command. - Check
dmesg -T,journalctl -k -b, the service journal and cgroupmemory.events. - If logs confirm an OS or cgroup kill, free headroom and remove concurrent jobs.
- Add permitted swap for short spikes, then verify that the kernel sees it.
- Test a measured
NODE_OPTIONS=--max-old-space-size=...value while reserving memory for non-V8 allocations. - Use a lockfile with
npm ci, omit development dependencies only where safe, and move the build to CI or a temporary larger machine if necessary. - Resize the VPS or raise the applicable cgroup limit when the workload’s genuine peak remains above the ceiling.
The key diagnostic fact is simple: a plain Killed line usually means the operating system or a memory cgroup forcibly ended the process. Kernel and cgroup evidence tells you which boundary was crossed; only then can you choose between reclaiming headroom, adding permitted swap, constraining V8, changing the build, or providing more memory.
