No current foldable phone should be treated as completely dustproof. The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold carries an IP68 rating but Google’s own safety guide says it is “not dust proof.” Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 is rated IP48 and specifies resistance to particles larger than 1 mm, while Motorola’s razr fold guidance lists laboratory-tested ratings yet still warns that dust can shorten hinge life or damage the display. Ratings describe defined test conditions; they are not a promise that every particle is excluded for the life of a moving phone.
What “dust resistant” means on a foldable phone
An IP (Ingress Protection) code is a test classification, not a lifetime warranty. It describes how a particular device performed against specified solids and liquids when tested under defined conditions. A foldable adds moving parts, a hinge cavity and a flexible inner display, so the practical question is narrower than “What is the IP rating?” Ask instead:
- What exact solid-particle protection does the first IP digit claim?
- Does the manufacturer name a particle size, test condition or limitation?
- Does the care guidance warn about dust entering the hinge or damaging the inner screen?
- Does the manufacturer say resistance can decline after wear, repair, disassembly or damage?
Those qualifications matter because a phone can meet a rating when it leaves the factory and still be unsuitable for a dusty worksite, beach, trail or workshop. A rating also does not establish how the hinge behaves after thousands of opening cycles, a drop, a screen replacement or exposure to abrasive grit. No official source cited here provides a population-wide failure rate or an independent head-to-head dust-ingress test.
How the major current foldables describe dust protection
| Phone | Published rating or qualifier | Manufacturer’s dust warning | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold | IP68, described in Google’s 2025 announcement and safety material | Google says the phone is not dustproof or waterproof; the rating applies when it leaves the factory and resistance may diminish through wear, repair, disassembly or damage. | Factory-condition IP68 compliance, not a guarantee that dust cannot enter or cause damage later. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 | IP48; Samsung specifies resistance to solid particles larger than 1 mm. | The specification is a particle-size statement, not a claim that fine dust is excluded. | Protection against the stated test condition only; the sheet does not establish fine-dust or lifetime hinge performance. |
| Motorola razr fold | IP46, IP48 and IP49 tests under controlled laboratory conditions, according to current support guidance. | Motorola advises avoiding dust because it may reduce hinge life or damage the display and says the device is not dustproof. | Controlled-test results with explicit operational caution; no dustproof guarantee. |
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold: IP68 with an explicit disclaimer
Google advertises the Pixel 10 Pro Fold as water and dust resistant to IP68 in its product announcement: Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold announcement. Its official safety and regulatory guide is more precise: “Your device is designed to comply with dust and water protection rating IP68 under IEC standard 60529 when it leaves the factory, but it is not dust proof or water proof.” Read literally, that statement sets three boundaries:

- It is a design-compliance claim. The phone is designed to meet IP68 under the named IEC standard.
- The timing is explicit. Google ties the rating to the condition of the device when it leaves the factory.
- The label is not a guarantee. Google warns that ordinary wear, repair, disassembly or damage can reduce resistance.
The full warning appears in Google’s Pixel safety guide. A user who has had the phone opened for service, dropped it, bent a component or accumulated normal hinge wear should not assume the original rating still describes its current condition.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7: IP48 and a particle-size limit
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 specification sheet lists IP48 and says the device resists solid particles larger than 1 mm. That is narrower than the everyday phrase “dustproof.” It identifies a particle-size threshold used in the stated protection specification; it does not say that microscopic dust, powder or fine grit is blocked, nor does it promise that particles cannot reach the hinge or inner display over time.
The complete wording is in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 specification sheet. Keep the qualifier attached whenever you describe the rating: “resists solid particles larger than 1 mm” is materially different from “sealed against all dust.”
Motorola razr fold: laboratory ratings plus a direct dust warning
Motorola’s hardware guidance lists IP46, IP48 and IP49 testing under controlled laboratory conditions. The same guidance advises users to avoid dust because it may reduce hinge life or damage the display, and it says the phone is not dustproof. See Motorola’s hardware guidance and its UK support guidance.

The multiple IP figures should not be read as a single promise that every kind of dust is excluded. They are test results under controlled conditions, while the care instruction addresses uncontrolled use. A construction site, pocket containing sand, or a dusty repair bench can expose a hinge to particles and forces that a laboratory test does not model.
Why an IP rating cannot make a folding hinge dustproof
Foldables have a moving, exposed mechanism
A conventional slab phone has no hinge that repeatedly opens and closes. A foldable must accommodate movement while protecting two halves of the chassis and, in some designs, a flexible inner display. Even when seals and brushes are present, the hinge area remains the part manufacturers tell users to treat cautiously. Motorola specifically links dust exposure to reduced hinge life or display damage; that warning is about mechanical and screen consequences, not merely cosmetic dirt.
“Dust” covers particles with very different behavior
Fine household dust, beach sand, metal filings and workshop grit do not behave alike. Samsung’s “larger than 1 mm” qualifier illustrates why particle size matters. A larger particle may be stopped by a barrier that does not block fine powder. Conversely, a coarse grain can become an abrasive lodged in a moving joint. Without a model-specific test result for the particle and environment you care about, an IP code cannot predict that scenario.
Protection changes as the phone ages
Google explicitly warns that resistance can diminish through ordinary wear, repair, disassembly or damage. A repaired or dropped phone is therefore not equivalent to a new unit, even if the model number and original rating are unchanged. Adhesives, gaskets, covers and hinge components can also experience wear from repeated use. The official guidance does not quantify a service-life percentage, so do not invent one.

Laboratory ratings are not failure statistics
The published material establishes ratings and cautions, not a percentage of phones that fail after dust exposure. Anecdotal posts, isolated videos or informal teardowns cannot be converted into a representative failure rate. If you need a phone for a dusty job, treat the manufacturer’s avoidance advice as the relevant operating instruction rather than assuming a rating predicts field survival.
How to reduce dust risk in everyday use
- Keep the phone closed when you are not using it. Closing the device limits the time the hinge and inner display are exposed. This is a handling precaution, not a new protection rating.
- Avoid deliberately dusty environments. Do not place a foldable on sand, powder, soil, workshop benches or loose construction debris. Motorola’s guidance specifically recommends avoiding dust.
- Keep pockets and bags clean. Sand and grit carried with keys, tools or clothing can be more abrasive than ordinary household dust.
- Inspect before opening. If visible grit is on the exterior or near the hinge, move to a clean area before unfolding. Opening through a lodged particle can carry it into a moving joint or across the inner display.
- Use only the cleaning method in the model’s manual. Do not inject compressed air, liquids, solvents or sharp tools into a hinge unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that method. An improvised cleaning attempt can push particles deeper or damage seals.
- Record repairs and impacts. After a drop, hinge deformation or repair, assume the original factory resistance may no longer apply until the manufacturer or an authorized service provider evaluates it.
What to do if dust gets into the hinge or display area
Stop forcing the hinge
If opening or closing feels gritty, catches, makes a new sound or requires extra force, stop cycling the phone. Repeated movement can grind a particle against a hinge surface or flexible display.
Do not probe the gap
Paper, pins, brushes with rigid bristles and household sprays can scratch surfaces, tear protective layers or drive contamination inward. The official sources do not establish a universal user-cleaning procedure for every foldable, so the safest general action is to avoid invasive cleaning.
Use the exact support channel for the model
Check the phone’s current manufacturer care page and describe the symptom, exposure and any prior drop or repair. If the inner screen shows a line, black spot, bubbling, touch failure or new crease after contamination, stop using the hinge and arrange service rather than treating it as ordinary surface dust.

Back up data before service
A repair may require opening or replacing components, and Google warns that disassembly can reduce resistance. Back up important data, remove authentication barriers as instructed by the service provider, and ask what water and dust protection—if any—will remain after the repair.
Do cases or covers make a foldable dustproof?
No evidence in the cited manufacturer material establishes that a case seals a foldable hinge against dust. A case can help with drops, scratches or everyday handling if it is designed for the exact model, but its presence does not upgrade the phone’s IP rating. Covers also have openings around the hinge, buttons, microphones and charging port; trapped grit between a case and the phone can create its own abrasion.
If you buy a case, verify exact model compatibility and look for protection claims that the case maker actually documents. Do not describe a case as dust-sealing unless the manufacturer provides a test standard and conditions that support that claim.

Start with the environment, not the largest IP number. A commuter who occasionally encounters household dust has a different risk profile from a builder, landscaper, machinist or beach photographer. Use this checklist:
- Read the complete support and safety guidance, not only the product-page badge.
- Write down the exact solid-particle qualifier, such as Samsung’s “larger than 1 mm” wording.
- Look for explicit statements about dust, hinge life and inner-display damage.
- Check whether the manufacturer limits the rating to factory condition or warns about wear, repair, disassembly and impact.
- Confirm the service process and expected protection after a hinge or screen repair.
- Plan a storage and cleaning routine that keeps grit away from the hinge.
On the evidence available here, none of the three models can honestly be called dustproof. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has an IP68 factory-condition claim accompanied by Google’s “not dust proof” warning. The Galaxy Z Fold7’s IP48 specification includes a particle-size qualifier rather than a fine-dust guarantee. The razr fold lists controlled-laboratory tests but tells users to avoid dust because of possible hinge and display damage. Those distinctions are more useful than ranking the phones by a single digit.
Bottom line for buyers and owners
An IP rating is helpful when you read its exact scope, but it does not erase the vulnerabilities created by a moving hinge, a flexible inner screen, aging seals or later damage. Treat every current foldable as dust resistant only within the manufacturer’s stated test conditions. Keep it away from deliberate dust exposure, stop using a gritty hinge, and rely on the model’s support guidance after a drop, repair or contamination event.
