An NFL blackout usually means the service you opened does not have the rights to show that matchup in your current market. It does not necessarily mean the game is unavailable everywhere. Identify the exact game, find its local or national broadcaster for your ZIP code, and use the service that carries that broadcast. NFL Sunday Ticket is for out-of-market regular-season Sunday afternoon games on CBS and FOX; NFL+ is not a live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon video solution.
What an NFL streaming blackout actually means
“Blackout” is a rights and availability message, not a single technical failure. A game can be visible in a schedule but blocked on one app because that app does not own the broadcast rights for your location, the game belongs to a different package, or your service has detected a different viewing area than expected.
NFL Support says live availability is subject to broadcast rights and blackout restrictions. Rights are assigned by game category and market, so the same matchup can be available on one service, unavailable on another, and different again when you travel.

For a Sunday afternoon game carried by your local CBS or FOX station, the local broadcast generally takes precedence over an out-of-market package. A Sunday Ticket subscription is designed to show Sunday afternoon games that are outside your local broadcast area; it does not replace the local station’s feed.

National games follow a separate route
Nationally distributed games are not treated as ordinary local Sunday-afternoon inventory. Sunday night, Monday night, and other nationally scheduled broadcasts must be watched through the network or platform holding that game’s rights. A Sunday Ticket subscription does not include national broadcasts.
Your current market matters
Services use your current viewing area to determine which local games you can receive. YouTube TV says availability can change when you travel and requires location permissions. A location error can therefore make a legitimate subscription look like a blackout.
Identify the game before changing subscriptions
The fastest fix is to classify the exact matchup. Do not start by buying another package or repeatedly restarting the app.

- Write down the matchup, date, kickoff time, and competition. Note whether it is preseason, a regular-season Sunday afternoon game, a nationally scheduled game, or a postseason game.
- Determine whether it is local for your current ZIP code. Use the NFL Ways to Watch lookup and the local game listings in YouTube’s NFL guide. If you are traveling, use the ZIP code for the place where you are watching now.
- Find the broadcaster shown for that location. The listing should identify CBS, FOX, NBC, a national network, or a digital platform. That broadcaster—not the league schedule alone—determines the correct stream.
- Compare the broadcaster with your subscription. Check whether your plan includes the channel or platform and whether the game category is included. A plan can be active and still exclude this particular matchup.
- Check your account, location, and device. A wrong account, disabled location permission, travel-area mismatch, or unsupported device can produce a message that resembles a rights blackout.

These are U.S. viewing routes. NFL Support describes NFL+ as U.S.-only and directs viewers outside the United States to DAZN. Rights, channel lineups, and platform availability can change by season and game date, so verify the current listing before kickoff.

How to fix a blackout for a local game
When the listing says CBS, FOX, or NBC
If the game is local, use the listed local network rather than expecting Sunday Ticket to carry it. You may be able to watch through a pay-TV service that includes the station, the network’s authorized streaming service, or an antenna if the station broadcasts over the air at your address.
- Open the NFL Ways to Watch lookup or the YouTube local-game guide.
- Enter the ZIP code for the place where you will watch the game.
- Confirm the station and the exact matchup, not just the network logo.
- Open the authorized service listed for that network and sign in with the subscription that includes it.
- If you use an antenna, check that the local station reaches your address and that your television can receive and scan the channel. An antenna cannot provide a game carried by a station you cannot receive.
An indoor HDTV antenna can be a practical option for a local over-the-air game, but the official viewing guide does not establish reception at any particular home. Check station coverage and reception conditions before purchasing one.
How to watch an out-of-market Sunday afternoon game
For a regular-season Sunday afternoon game on CBS or FOX that is not carried locally, the official route described is NFL Sunday Ticket through YouTube TV or as a YouTube Primetime Channel. This is the category for which Sunday Ticket is intended.
What Sunday Ticket includes
- Regular-season Sunday afternoon games on CBS and FOX that are outside your local broadcast area.
- Games available according to the market and rights assignment shown in the current listing.
What Sunday Ticket does not include
- Your local Sunday afternoon games.
- National broadcasts.
- Preseason games.
- Postseason games.
- Certain select games and digital-exclusive games identified in the package terms.
If the matchup falls into one of the excluded categories, an active Sunday Ticket subscription will not remove the blackout. Return to the game’s listing and follow the broadcaster shown there.

Why NFL+ may still show a blackout
NFL+ has a narrower live-video role than many viewers expect. NFL Support says NFL+ provides live local and primetime regular-season and postseason video on a phone or tablet. It does not provide live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games.
That means a local Sunday game can be available in the NFL app on a supported mobile device while the same game is unavailable on a television, or an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game can remain blocked even though you pay for NFL+. NFL+ also provides live audio on supported devices, but audio is not a substitute for the live video feed.
Check the device before troubleshooting the account
- Use a supported phone or tablet for the live local or primetime video covered by NFL+.
- Do not assume that casting or a connected-TV app has the same rights as the mobile experience.
- For out-of-market Sunday-afternoon video, use the service assigned to that category rather than NFL+.
Fix account and location problems on YouTube services
A rights restriction and a setup problem can look identical. YouTube’s setup guidance specifically notes that a missing game or a “Get NFL Sunday Ticket” prompt can mean you are signed into the wrong account.
Verify the signed-in account
- Sign out of the YouTube or YouTube TV app on the device showing the message.
- Sign back in with the Google account that purchased or was invited to the relevant subscription.
- Open the subscription or membership section and confirm that the package is active on that account.
- Return to the game listing and test the stream again.
Do not buy the package a second time until you have checked the account. A purchase attached to another Google account will not automatically appear in the account currently open on your television or browser.

Allow location access
- Enable location permission for YouTube TV in your device or browser settings.
- In YouTube TV, use the official Home area and Current playback area process when prompted.
- Accept the location shown only if it matches where you are watching now.
- Reload the game listing after the location is confirmed.
YouTube TV uses the current viewing area for local-channel rights. A disabled permission, stale location, or travel to another market can change the games displayed. If the service asks you to update your area, follow its on-screen verification rather than trying to force a different market.
Understand travel behavior
Travel can legitimately change the local games available to you. A subscription that showed one station at home may show a different local station—or a different local matchup—at your destination. Check the destination ZIP code and the destination-market listing before kickoff.

Preseason and postseason games need separate checks
Do not infer coverage from regular-season Sunday Ticket or NFL+ rules. Sunday Ticket excludes preseason and postseason games. NFL+ can carry live local and primetime postseason video on a phone or tablet, subject to its device and rights limits. A postseason matchup may instead be assigned to a national network or another authorized platform.
For any game outside the ordinary Sunday-afternoon schedule, start with the official listing for that date. The category, not the team, determines the package.

When technical troubleshooting will not help
Restarting a router, reinstalling an app, or clearing a browser cache cannot grant rights that your plan does not include. Technical steps are worthwhile only after the game, market, package, and device all match.
- Rights mismatch: Choose the broadcaster listed for the game.
- Local-game exclusion: Use the local station or its authorized service instead of Sunday Ticket.
- National-game exclusion: Follow the national network or platform assigned to the matchup.
- Device restriction: Move to the supported phone or tablet for NFL+ mobile video, or use the TV service carrying the broadcast.
- Location mismatch: Correct permissions and the current viewing area.
- Account mismatch: Sign in with the account that owns the subscription.
If all of those checks are correct and the stream is still blocked, contact the service that displays the message. The official guidance does not provide one universal technical remedy for every blackout notice, because the underlying rights and account conditions differ.
A practical decision checklist
- Local Sunday afternoon? Watch the CBS or FOX station assigned to your ZIP code; Sunday Ticket will not replace it.
- Out-of-market Sunday afternoon, regular season? Check NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV or as a YouTube Primetime Channel.
- National game? Use the network or platform listed for that matchup; Sunday Ticket is not the route.
- Local or primetime video on a phone or tablet? Check whether NFL+ covers the game and use a supported mobile device.
- Need only the call? NFL+ audio may work on supported devices, but it will not unlock live video.
- Traveling? Recheck the destination ZIP code and location permissions.
- Still blocked after every match? Confirm the account and contact the relevant service’s support.
Official rules and packages are volatile. Recheck the NFL Ways to Watch lookup, the current YouTube or YouTube TV game listing, and the applicable service terms for the season and game date.
