A new PS5 disc can ask you to update the console because the game requires a minimum system-software version newer than the one installed. That is a console firmware requirement, not necessarily a download for the game itself. Sony explicitly says an update notice can appear when an online PS5 checks in or when a disc requiring a later system-software version is inserted. On a jailbroken console, accepting that update is a separate compatibility decision: the game may work afterward, but the newer firmware may no longer support the jailbreak available for your current version.
What the PS5 update prompt actually means
The wording of the notice matters. Sony’s support documentation says, “You will be notified about new system software updates if your console is connected to the internet or when you insert a game disc that requires a later system software version to play.” You can read the full explanation in Sony’s PS5 system-software update instructions.
In the disc case, the console has detected that the software on the disc was built to run only on or above a particular PS5 system-software version. If your console is below that minimum, the operating system displays an update request before the game can start. The message does not mean that every new release requires the newest firmware, and it does not mean every disc contains a system update. It is a conditional requirement attached to that game version.
System software and game updates are different
PS5 terminology can make two unrelated downloads look similar. A system-software update changes the console’s operating system and firmware. A game or application update changes the title’s installed data, such as bug fixes, downloadable content, performance improvements or online-service changes. Sony documents separate checks for these categories on its PS5 system and application update page.

Read the complete prompt before selecting anything. “Update system software” is the firmware decision relevant to jailbreak compatibility. “Update” shown inside a game’s tile, download list or game menu usually refers to application data, although a newer game patch can itself require a newer system-software version.
Why a game has a minimum firmware version
New console features and development tools
Game developers build against Sony’s PlayStation software-development tools and operating-system interfaces. A release may depend on APIs, graphics features, security components or platform fixes that were introduced after your console’s installed version. Setting a minimum version lets the publisher ship one supported build rather than maintaining compatibility with every older firmware branch.
The requirement can also reflect certification timing. A title may have been completed, tested and approved against a newer system version even when its core gameplay would appear technically capable of running on an older one. The requirement printed in the game’s metadata is therefore the reliable boundary for that specific release; disc ownership does not override it.
The base disc and a later patch can have different requirements
The game on the original disc is not always the same software you receive after downloading updates. A launch disc may run on one minimum firmware, while a later patch adds features or fixes that raise the minimum. Current secondary reporting has described cases in which different release or update circumstances were associated with different firmware requirements. Check the exact title, edition and patch rather than assuming that all copies share one number.
This distinction is particularly important if you are deciding whether to insert a disc while the console is offline. Offline play can prevent an automatic patch download, but it cannot make a disc run below the minimum system version encoded for that disc build. Conversely, declining a patch does not guarantee that the unpatched disc will work if the base release itself requires newer firmware.
How to identify which update your PS5 wants
- Read the full on-screen wording. Look for “system software,” “console update” or a firmware version. Wording such as “game update,” “application update” or a download shown under the game tile points to game data instead.
- Check the installed console version. Open Settings, choose System, then System Software and Console Information (Sony may adjust labels slightly by region or firmware release). Record the displayed system-software version before making a decision.
- Check the game’s update status separately. Highlight the game on the home screen, press the Options button and choose Check for Update. This checks application data; it is not the same as approving a console firmware update.
- Capture the requirement before cancelling. If the prompt displays a required version, photograph or write it down. The exact number is more useful than a description such as “old firmware” or “latest update.”
- Identify the software path. Decide whether the requirement belongs to the original disc, a downloaded patch, a digital edition or an online service. Different builds of the same game can have different dependencies.
If the prompt is ambiguous, cancel it and perform the two checks above while the console remains on its current version. Do not assume that a request appearing immediately after inserting a disc is a game patch; Sony specifically documents disc-triggered system-update notices.
What changes on a jailbroken PS5
On a standard, unmodified console, installing the required official firmware is usually a straightforward choice: it may be necessary to play the title, use a new peripheral feature or connect to a service. On a jailbroken console, firmware is also part of the exploit and homebrew compatibility boundary. A jailbreak that works on one version may fail on a later version, and Sony’s future updates can close the conditions that made the earlier method possible.

That makes the decision a trade-off rather than a routine maintenance step:
| Choice | What you may gain | What you risk or give up | Questions to answer first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay on the current firmware | Preserves the existing jailbreak environment and its known tools, if they remain functional. | The new game, patch or online feature may refuse to start. | Does the base game work? Is the required feature worth changing a working setup? |
| Install the required official firmware | Provides the system version expected by the disc or patch and restores normal Sony support for that version. | The current jailbreak may stop working; future support is uncertain and version-specific. | What exact version is required, and is there credible current jailbreak support for that version? |
There is no universal “safe” answer. Compare the exact system-software requirement, the current jailbreak status for your installed version, whether the requirement belongs to the base game or an optional patch, and how much you value keeping your present setup. Do not treat an internet forum’s old compatibility list as a permanent chart: both game patches and jailbreak research change.
A dated example of why generic charts go stale
A September 30, 2026 report from Tom’s Hardware described a then-current Relapse jailbreak situation in which support was reported for firmware up to 13.60 while some newer games were already reported to demand firmware 14.00. That is a time-stamped report, not Sony documentation and not a compatibility guarantee for every console, disc or patch. Use it to understand the conflict—newer games can move faster than jailbreak support—not as a permanent recommendation.
Before changing firmware, verify the exact console model and installed version, the game’s required version and a current specialist assessment of jailbreak support. The sources available here do not establish that an official update can be safely reversed, nor that every title has a workaround on older firmware.

Official ways to update a stock PS5
Sony supports updating over the internet and, when that is unavailable, installing an official update file from a USB drive. The PS5 safety documentation for the CFI-20XX family is available as a Sony PDF safety guide. Sony warns users to obtain update files from its official channels rather than another source.
Internet update
- Connect the PS5 to the internet and open Settings.
- Go to System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the console powered on until the restart completes. Interrupting power during an update can damage the installation.
These steps install the official system version offered by Sony; they are not a method for preserving jailbreak compatibility. A user who intends to remain on a particular firmware should stop before confirming the update and verify the version-specific consequences.
USB update when internet updating is unavailable
- Use a USB drive prepared according to Sony’s instructions and obtain the matching official update file from PlayStation Support.
- Place the file in the folder structure and filename Sony specifies for PS5 updates. Do not rename it casually or substitute a file from an unofficial mirror.
- Insert the drive into the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, and choose the USB update option if it is offered.
- Confirm the displayed version and allow the console to restart without removing the drive or disconnecting power.
USB installation is an official offline delivery method, not a way to select an older supported jailbreak version or bypass a game’s requirement. If the console rejects the file, stop rather than trying random packages; check the model, folder names, filename and Sony’s current instructions.

Physical and digital editions: what ownership does—and does not—change
A disc gives you a local copy of the game data, but it does not guarantee play on an older firmware. Sony’s current US product listing describes a PS5 console configuration with a disc drive at PlayStation Direct; hardware availability is separate from software compatibility.

For a digital game, the PlayStation Store and download client can enforce the requirement before installation or launch. Troubleshooting common situations
The disc asks for a system update before starting
Cancel the prompt, record the required version and check your installed system version. If you are preserving a jailbreak, do not confirm until you have made the version-specific decision. If you are using a stock console and want to play, follow Sony’s official internet or USB procedure.
The game starts, but an update later appears
Determine whether the new message concerns application data or system software. A patch can introduce a new firmware dependency, so compare the base release with the patch requirement. You can leave an optional game update uninstalled, but online features may require current game data and the publisher can change service requirements.
The console is offline but still displays the notice
An internet connection is not required for the disc check. The disc itself can contain metadata identifying a later minimum system-software version, which is why Sony documents this notification path.

Use only the official file and the folder structure specified by Sony, confirm that the file matches the PS5 model and try another properly formatted drive if Sony’s troubleshooting steps permit it. Do not install an arbitrary package advertised as a downgrade or jailbreak fix; the supplied official procedures do not establish that such a package is safe or reversible.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you identified whether the prompt is for system software or game data?
- What exact firmware version is installed, and what exact version does the game or patch require?
- Does the requirement apply to the base disc, a later patch, a digital edition or an online feature?
- Are you willing to trade the current jailbreak setup for access to this game or update?
- Have you checked a current, version-specific jailbreak source rather than relying on an undated list?
- If updating, are you using Sony’s official internet or USB files and instructions?
The core distinction is simple: the console is asking for firmware because that particular game build was released with a minimum system-software requirement. On a jailbroken PS5, that firmware change can alter the entire compatibility environment, so verify the versions and decide deliberately instead of treating the notice as an ordinary game download.
