Neuberger Berman’s neutral view on global equities is a tactical balance, not a forecast of a market-wide collapse. Its outlooks describe resilient growth and improving earnings, but also stretched valuations, heavy concentration in U.S. mega-cap technology, uncertain interest rates and inflation, trade and geopolitical threats, and possible oil-shock damage. The result is a preference for selective regional and sector exposure rather than an unconditional overweight to global stocks.
Why the firm is neutral instead of bullish
The stance reflects conflicting time horizons. An IPE listing for Neuberger Berman’s “Engine Running, Shifting to Neutral,” dated July 4, 2023, described an investment committee responding to signals that looked different over the short and medium term. That tension remains central to the current position: medium-term fundamentals can be constructive while near-term risk pricing is fragile.
Growth and earnings are still supportive
Neuberger Berman’s second-quarter 2026 outlook said persistent macro tailwinds and broadening earnings growth kept it constructive on risk assets “through the fog of war.” Its allocation commentary also pointed to monetary easing, fiscal stimulus, and improving momentum in the United States, Japan, and China. Those are not the assumptions normally associated with an outright equity-bearish call.

Risks can still overwhelm a constructive baseline
The same outlook highlighted the potential effects of a prolonged oil shock and geopolitical conflict on near-term equity risk. A separate 2025 allocation commentary said macro, trade-related, and geopolitical risks remained elevated and threatened the firm’s constructive baseline. Rates, inflation, energy costs, and policy surprises can change the valuation of stocks even when company earnings are holding up.

Valuation and concentration are key parts of the calculation
Neuberger Berman has also warned that index-level exposure can hide concentration risk. In its 2025 commentary, the Magnificent 7 produced a 2.6% first-half total return, compared with 6.2% for the S&P 500, according to Neuberger Berman Research and FactSet. The commentary described mega-cap valuations as stretched.
In the second-quarter 2026 outlook, the firm said the S&P 500 forward price-to-earnings ratio had fallen 10% from its October 2025 peak, but still listed the Magnificent 7 at 26 times forward earnings. A pullback from a peak does not by itself make an asset cheap. For a globally diversified investor, the issue is whether expected earnings growth justifies paying elevated prices for a small group of companies that has a large influence on major benchmarks.

Which regions Neuberger Berman prefers
Neutral global exposure does not mean equal conviction in every market. The firm’s second-quarter 2026 regional allocation shows offsetting preferences:

| Region | Stance in the 2Q 2026 outlook | Context given in the outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | Overweight | Part of a group benefiting from improving momentum and policy support |
| Emerging markets | Overweight | Preferred selectively within the broader global allocation |
| United States | Upgraded to overweight | Improving momentum, despite valuation and concentration concerns |
| Europe | Underweight | More constrained economic and policy backdrop |
These positions help explain how the overall stance can remain neutral. Overweights in Japan, emerging markets, and the United States are balanced by an underweight in Europe and by caution about expensive, concentrated parts of the U.S. market. The result is regional dispersion rather than a simple decision to buy or sell all equities.

Is Neuberger Berman bearish on equities?
No. The firm’s published language is constructive on medium-term growth and risk assets, while warning that near-term outcomes could be disrupted by oil, geopolitics, trade policy, inflation, or interest-rate changes. “Neutral” therefore means the expected reward from adding broad global-stock exposure is not compelling enough to justify ignoring those risks at the current tactical horizon.
A bearish call would imply that a broad and sustained decline is the central scenario. Neuberger Berman’s outlook instead treats downside as meaningful but balanced against earnings expansion, fiscal support, and monetary easing. Its regional overweights are further evidence that it is making discriminating equity bets rather than abandoning the asset class.

What a neutral global-equity stance means for a portfolio
Keep diversification, but reduce concentration
Investors using a neutral view would generally avoid letting one country, index, or handful of mega-cap companies determine the portfolio’s result. Regional diversification matters because economic cycles, currencies, valuations, and policy responses are no longer moving in lockstep.
Favor durable earnings and strong balance sheets
Neuberger Berman’s practical responses to uncertainty include quality, earnings durability, and sound balance sheets. These characteristics cannot prevent losses, but they can reduce dependence on perfect economic conditions or continuously falling interest rates.

Match risk to the investment horizon
The stance is tactical. A long-term investor may still hold a strategic equity allocation while rebalancing away from excessive concentration. A shorter-horizon investor should recognize that oil shocks, elections, trade measures, and rate repricing can move markets before corporate fundamentals have time to adjust. Neither approach turns the firm’s view into a guaranteed forecast or a personalized recommendation.
How neutral differs from bullish and bearish positioning
| Position | Typical emphasis | How Neuberger Berman’s view compares |
|---|---|---|
| Bullish | Earnings and growth are expected to outweigh valuation, rate, and geopolitical risks; broad equity exposure is favored. | The firm sees supportive growth and earnings, but not enough to justify an unconditional global-stock overweight. |
| Neutral | Maintain diversified exposure while balancing valuation, earnings quality, regional breadth, and macro risks. | This matches the firm’s global stance, alongside selective regional overweights and an underweight to Europe. |
| Bearish | A broad, sustained decline is the base case; equity exposure is materially reduced. | That is not the firm’s stated baseline because it remains constructive on medium-term risk assets. |
What is known about the video itself
The exact video metadata in the title—its publisher page, publication date, and speaker—has not been conclusively matched. InvestmentNews confirms a related Neuberger Berman video dated December 17, 2025 featuring Jeff Blazek, and Neuberger Berman’s current equities page lists later research content, but those references do not establish that either is the exact video named here. The investment rationale above comes from the firm’s cited 2025 and second-quarter 2026 outlook commentary, not an assumption about an unverified speaker or release date.
