The flagship Orbi 970 costs more because it combines quad-band WiFi 7, a high-capacity wireless backhaul, multi-gigabit Ethernet, and three units intended to cover a large home. Those features can help in the right setup, but they do not guarantee faster internet for every device. NETGEAR’s U.S. product page listed the RBE973S three-pack at $1,799.99 when accessed in 2026; the price and available configurations can change.

What are you paying for in the Orbi 970?

“Orbi” is a family of mesh systems, not one model. The clearest example of the high price is the flagship Orbi 970, whose premium comes from its radios, backhaul design, wired ports, and multi-unit bundle—not from a single speed figure.

Quad-band WiFi 7 and dedicated backhaul

NETGEAR describes the 970 as a quad-band WiFi 7 system. Its dedicated 5 GHz radio is intended to carry traffic between the router and satellites, while WiFi 7 Multi-Link Operation can use 6 GHz capacity. NETGEAR advertises wireless backhaul of up to 10 Gbps. A dedicated backhaul can reserve radio capacity for mesh-node traffic instead of making it compete with client traffic on the same band, though actual performance depends on the home, placement, interference, and connected devices. NETGEAR’s Orbi 970 product information describes the system and its capabilities.

Aggregate capacity, not one device’s speed

NETGEAR rates the 970 at up to 27 Gbps across its bands and says it can support up to 200 connected devices. The 27 Gbps figure is an advertised aggregate capacity across the system’s radios, not a speed test result or a promise that one phone, computer, or internet connection will reach that rate. The 200-device figure is likewise a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee of equal performance with every device active.

Multi-gigabit Ethernet

The router has a 10Gb internet port, a 10Gb LAN port, and four 2.5Gb LAN ports. Satellite units also have multi-gigabit ports and support wired backhaul. Those connections can matter if you subscribe to multi-gigabit broadband, connect high-speed wired equipment, or can run Ethernet between mesh nodes. If your broadband and wired devices are slower, the extra port capacity may go unused.

Three units for broad coverage

The RBE973S three-pack contains one router and two satellites. NETGEAR advertises coverage of up to 10,000 square feet for that pack, but that is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for every building. Walls, floors, construction materials, interference, and satellite placement all affect coverage. A smaller home may not need three high-end units.

A limited security-service bundle

NETGEAR’s product materials include an initial one-year Armor subscription. Its technical documentation says a paid subscription is required after the included trial, so this should be treated as a limited bundle rather than lifetime security service. Check the current renewal terms before factoring a recurring cost into a purchase. NETGEAR’s Orbi 970 technical document covers the subscription qualification.

How does the 970 compare with lower Orbi tiers?

The flagship is not the only way to buy WiFi 7 mesh from NETGEAR. The company’s listed U.S. prices and specifications accessed in 2026 show a lower tier with less advertised capacity and different connectivity.

NETGEAR’s 770-versus-970 comparison presents the 770 as a less expensive WiFi 7 option with tri-band radios, up to 11 Gbps, and lower device and port capacity. Its comparison uses stated MSRP and coverage figures; those historical values should not be treated as today’s live prices. The important distinction is that WiFi 7 mesh does not automatically require buying the 970’s full feature set. NETGEAR’s WiFi 7 mesh comparison outlines the tiers.

Who is likely to benefit from the premium?

The higher price is easier to justify when the household can put the extra radios, ports, and coverage to work. Assess your network as a whole rather than choosing based on the largest advertised number.

  • Large or difficult-to-cover home: A multi-node system may help when one router cannot provide coverage throughout the building. The advertised three-pack coverage still depends on layout and placement.
  • Multi-gigabit broadband: A 10Gb internet port is most relevant when the broadband service and compatible equipment can use more than ordinary gigabit speeds.
  • Many active devices: The 970’s additional radio capacity and advertised device support may suit a busy household, but neither guarantees a specific speed under load.
  • Wired-heavy setup: The 10Gb and 2.5Gb LAN ports, plus wired backhaul support, are useful where workstations, storage, or mesh nodes can connect over Ethernet. A multi-gigabit switch can add ports if needed, but it is not required for wireless use.

It is harder to justify the flagship when the home is modest in size, the internet plan is far below the system’s wired capacity, or a less expensive mesh already solves the coverage problem. Client compatibility matters too: devices need appropriate WiFi capabilities to use newer bands and features.

Does the high price mean Orbi is the fastest?

No. The specifications explain what the system is designed to provide, not a universal performance ranking. WIRED’s June 4, 2024 review described the Orbi 970 as capable but expensive and reported that the Eero Max 7 and TP-Link Deco BE85 slightly outperformed it in some of WIRED’s tests. That result applies to the review’s test conditions and date; it does not establish which system will be fastest in a different home. WIRED’s Orbi 970 review gives that comparison.

How to decide whether to pay for it

  1. Check your broadband tier. If your internet plan is not multi-gigabit, the 10Gb internet port may offer little immediate benefit.
  2. Map the coverage problem. Identify where your current WiFi fails and whether a three-unit system is appropriate for your home’s size and layout.
  3. List wired connections. Count devices that could use 2.5Gb or 10Gb Ethernet, and determine whether you can wire the satellites for backhaul.
  4. Check your clients. Confirm whether the phones, computers, and other devices you care about support the WiFi features you expect to use.
  5. Compare tiers by usable features. Consider radio bands and backhaul, Ethernet ports, pack size, coverage needs, and subscription terms—not just aggregate Gbps.

If the answers point to a smaller coverage area, slower broadband, or few multi-gigabit wired devices, a lower Orbi tier or another mesh system that meets those requirements may be the more sensible purchase. No evidence establishes how much of the 970’s retail price comes from manufacturing cost, profit margin, or any single component, so a precise cost breakdown would be speculation.
