A Netflix download marked Expired is usually renewed by deleting the local copy and downloading the title again. That works only while the title is still available and Netflix permits another download. Netflix does not publish one universal expiration interval for every show or film.
What an expired Netflix download means
Netflix allows supported phones and tablets to store shows and films for offline playback, but those files are not permanent copies. Netflix’s Help Center says downloaded titles expire “after a certain amount of time.” The general guidance does not state one number of hours or days that applies to every title, account, country, or device.
Expiration is therefore different from a damaged download. The app is telling you that the offline viewing authorization for that copy has ended. If the title is still in the Netflix catalog and your account has not reached another download restriction, you can normally obtain a fresh authorization by deleting the old copy and downloading the title again.
A renewal cannot restore a title that Netflix has removed. Netflix states that shows and films no longer available on the service cannot be renewed or downloaded again. A title can also remain in the catalog while a studio or licensing agreement limits how often your account may download or renew it.

Netflix’s published support pages were checked on October 13, 2026. App labels, plan rules, and title availability can change, so the wording on your device may differ slightly from the labels below.
Renew an expired download
Android phone, Android tablet, or Fire tablet
- Open the Netflix app and select Downloads.
- Find the expired show or film and tap its download-status icon.
- Select Delete Download.
- Return to the title’s page using search or your list.
- Tap the download icon and wait for the new download to finish before going offline.
If the download icon is missing after deletion, do not keep deleting and reinstalling the app. First identify whether the title is still available, a licensing limit is in effect, or your account has reached a plan or device limit.
iPhone or iPad
On Apple devices, Netflix recommends checking the system clock as part of the expired-download fix:

- Confirm that the date, time, and time zone are correct. If they are wrong, correct them or turn on Set Automatically.
- Open Netflix and select Downloads.
- Tap the download-status icon beside the expired title.
- Choose Delete Download.
- Open the title again and tap the download icon to create a new offline copy.
An incorrect clock can prevent an authorization from being validated even when the title itself is still downloadable. If the device clock was already correct and the renewed download still fails, use the message-specific checks below.
Why Netflix does not give one expiry period
Netflix describes expiry as occurring after “a certain amount of time,” rather than promising a fixed period for every download. The practical window can depend on the title and the rights under which Netflix is distributing it. A downloaded file is tied to Netflix’s authorization system, so keeping a file on a device does not guarantee that it will remain playable indefinitely.
Do not rely on claims that every Netflix download lasts a particular number of days. Such a number is not supported by Netflix’s general guidance and could be wrong for a different title, region, plan, or app version. The only dependable test is whether the app currently allows the title to be downloaded again and whether it displays a more specific restriction.
Identify the message before choosing a fix
Several Netflix download problems look similar but require different actions. Use the wording shown in the app as the first diagnostic clue.

Title-specific licensing limits
Netflix says some shows and films have a limit on the number of times they can be downloaded or renewed because of studio and license agreements. This is separate from ordinary expiration: deleting the old file does not reset a licensing counter.
A warning may tell you when the title can be downloaded again. Keep that date and time in mind, and use streaming while connected to the internet until then. If no date is shown, Netflix’s support guidance does not provide a workaround for bypassing the restriction. Repeatedly reinstalling the app, signing out, or moving the file to another device will not change the rights attached to your account.

The ad-supported plan’s monthly download cap
Netflix’s current Help Center article says ad-supported plans allow 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. The allowance resets on the first day of each month. This is a plan-level rule, not the normal expiration period for an individual title.
Because Netflix can change plan terms, treat the 15-download figure as time-sensitive and confirm the live Help Center wording if your account shows a different message. The cap is counted by device and calendar month; deleting a file after downloading it does not turn the download into an unused allowance.

Netflix also limits how many devices on an account can have downloads. The permitted number depends on the plan. This error is not fixed by waiting for a title to expire.
- Identify another phone or tablet signed in to the same account that has Netflix downloads.
- On that device, open Downloads and delete downloads you no longer need, or remove downloads from the device according to Netflix’s account controls.
- Return to the device that displayed the error and try the title again.
If you cannot access the other device, sign out of it or use Netflix’s account-management options to remove access, then sign in again on the device you intend to use. The exact account controls and labels can vary by app version.
A practical decision path
Use this order so that you do not confuse a normal expiry with a rights or account restriction:
- Read the exact message. “Expired,” “Download Limit Warning,” and “too many devices” point to different causes.
- Check the title page while online. If the show or film is gone from Netflix, it cannot be renewed.
- Delete the expired local copy. Use the download-status icon and Delete Download; do not simply leave the expired file in place.
- Check the device clock. This is especially important on iPhone and iPad; use Settings > General > Date & Time and enable Set Automatically when appropriate.
- Try one fresh download. If it starts, leave the app connected until it completes.
- Follow any new restriction shown. A title-specific limit, monthly plan cap, or device-count error requires the corresponding remedy rather than another deletion.
If the title still will not download
The title has left Netflix
Search for the title while connected to the internet and open its current page. If Netflix no longer lists it, the expired copy cannot be renewed. The only supported option is to watch something else or stream another title that remains available.
The title is available but the download icon is absent
Look for a licensing warning or an account-limit message. Some available titles cannot be downloaded again immediately because of annual or other title-specific limits. The warning may include the next permitted download date.
The app reports a monthly allowance
On an ad-supported plan, compare your recent downloads with the 15-per-device calendar-month allowance described by Netflix. The reset occurs on the first day of the next calendar month, not after a rolling number of days.
The app reports too many devices
Remove downloads from another device on the account. The plan’s device allowance, rather than the individual title, is the limiting factor.

The title expires again after a fresh download
Verify that the device date and time are correct, especially on iPhone or iPad. Then read the message attached to the new failure. If Netflix identifies a title-specific limit, follow its stated date or stream while online; a second deletion will not override a license restriction.

Before you delete an expired copy
Make sure you are working on the device and profile that actually contain the download. Netflix downloads are stored locally, so deleting one from a phone does not remove downloads saved on a different tablet. If several people use the account, check the profile and device before removing anything. This avoids clearing a usable download when the problem is on another device.
Connect to a reliable internet connection before starting. You need an online connection to check the current catalog, receive the title’s download authorization, and complete the replacement download. If the title is large or your connection is slow, leave Netflix open until the download indicator shows completion. A partially completed file is not a dependable backup for travel.
After the new copy finishes, open it from Downloads while you are still online. This confirms that Netflix recognizes the file before you leave coverage. If the title immediately shows a different warning, record that exact wording; it is more useful than repeating the ordinary expiry steps.
How to tell expiry from a storage or connection problem
An “Expired” label points to authorization, not automatically to insufficient storage. Storage, network, or app problems may stop a new download, but the remedy depends on the message Netflix displays. First remove the expired copy, then attempt one fresh download while connected. If Netflix offers the download and it completes, the original issue was the expired authorization. If Netflix refuses before downloading, look for a catalog, title-limit, plan, or device-limit explanation.
Avoid treating every failed download as proof that the title has expired. The reverse is also true: freeing storage or changing networks will not bypass a title-specific licensing limit. The exact message and the title’s current page provide the useful distinction.
Offline travel planning
Downloads are best prepared close to the time you expect to watch them. Netflix does not publish one universal lifetime for all downloads, and a title can become unavailable or reach a licensing limit after you saved it. Downloading shortly before a flight, commute, or other offline period reduces the time in which those changes can matter.
- Connect to the internet and check the title page before downloading.
- Download every episode or film you need, then verify each item under Downloads.
- Keep the device clock and time zone accurate; automatic time is recommended on iPhone and iPad when available.
- Leave enough connection time to delete a failed copy and replace it.
- Check whether another device on the account already has downloads if you see a device-limit message.
- Keep a streamed alternative in mind for titles subject to licensing limits.
What not to do
Do not assume that changing the device date will extend a download. On iPhone and iPad, Netflix’s instruction is to correct an inaccurate clock, not to set an artificial date. Do not repeatedly reinstall the app, transfer files, or sign out and back in to defeat a licensing counter. Those actions do not change the studio agreement attached to the title.
Do not purchase a new phone, tablet, storage accessory, or headphone to solve an expiry message. Renewal is controlled by Netflix’s catalog, authorization, plan, and device rules; hardware does not remove those restrictions. Likewise, deleting a title after reaching a monthly cap does not give that month’s allowance back.

What renewal cannot do
Renewal does not extend a title’s presence in the Netflix catalog, remove a studio-imposed download limit, increase the number of devices allowed by your plan, or bypass a plan’s monthly allowance. It also does not convert the file into a permanent video that can be copied outside Netflix. The process only requests a new authorized offline copy under the rules that apply at that moment.

Bottom line for an “Expired” message
Start with Downloads, delete the expired item, and download it again. If Netflix will not offer the download, check the title’s availability, read any licensing warning, verify the device clock on iPhone or iPad, and then check for the ad-supported plan’s monthly allowance or a too-many-devices restriction. There is no universal Netflix expiration timetable, and no renewal method can recover a title that has left the service or exceeded its licensing limit.
