A NASA astronaut can leave flight status for several different reasons, and the phrase does not always mean the same thing. A medical finding may lead to a temporary restriction, a waiver, or disqualification. An astronaut may also remain medically qualified but not be assigned to a mission, move into management or another technical role, or retire. Separately, NASA aircraft rules allow aircrew to be removed from flight status after a mishap or a high-visibility close call. Those outcomes must not be treated as interchangeable.
What NASA means by flight status
There are two overlapping uses of the term. NASA’s aircraft-operations policy concerns people who operate NASA aircraft. Astronaut mission eligibility concerns whether a crew member is medically certified and selected for spaceflight duties. A person can be removed from one status without losing the other.
Under NASA Procedural Requirements 7900.3D, aircrew are assigned to flight status with approval from a Center Director and Human Resources. The policy says that aircrew members may be removed from flight status temporarily after a mishap or a high-visibility close call. NPR 7900.3D became effective May 1, 2017, and is listed with an expiration date of February 16, 2030. The same policy makes clear that these operational procedures do not replace medical-disqualification rules.
For astronauts, NASA uses medical selection, mission evaluation and recurring certification. NASA’s medical standard describes requirements for activities such as high-performance-aircraft operations, hypobaric and hyperbaric exposure, unusual gravity and high-g environments, spacewalks and robotic-arm operations. In practical terms, “flight status” can mean authorization to perform an aircraft duty, eligibility for spaceflight, or both, depending on the document and context.

The four distinctions that prevent confusion

Medical reasons: restriction, waiver or disqualification
NASA’s aerospace medical standard is designed to protect health, safety and long-term occupational performance. NASA describes the standard as establishing the medical requirements and clinical procedures necessary to ensure the health, safety and long-term occupational performance of career astronauts. The work environment explains the strict approach: astronauts face physiological and psychological effects in a harsh, isolated setting where ordinary terrestrial treatment is not immediately available.
What the medical review covers
Medical evaluation is tied to the actual duties a crew member may perform. The standard addresses exposure to pressure changes, demanding aircraft operations, acceleration and unusual gravity, extravehicular activity, robotic-arm operations and other mission tasks. Screening also considers psychological fitness and the ability to remain effective during isolation, emergencies and delayed access to care.
NASA’s goal is not simply to label someone fit or unfit once. Crew selection and recertification are intended to protect health, safety and occupational longevity. Annual recertification is part of that system, so a person’s status can change when a new condition, treatment, test result or mission requirement changes the risk assessment.

- An examining physician collects the relevant clinical history, examination findings and test data.
- The physician presents the medical information for specialist review.
- The Aerospace Medicine Board evaluates the case and makes a recommendation.
- The Chief Health and Medical Officer makes the final disposition on medical status.
The possible outcomes are broader than a permanent grounding. Depending on the finding and the mission, NASA may impose a temporary restriction, approve a waiver with conditions, or determine that the person is medically disqualified. A waiver is not a finding that the standard does not matter; it is a formal decision that the individual can safely perform specified duties under an accepted risk assessment.

Public summaries rarely establish the medical details of an individual astronaut, and privacy rules limit what can responsibly be inferred. Unless NASA has documented a specific case, it is inaccurate to name a condition as the reason someone left flight status.
Why not being assigned to a mission is different
Mission assignment is a staffing decision, not a medical verdict. NASA evaluates a medically qualified pool and builds a crew whose abilities and working relationships fit a particular vehicle, destination and schedule.
Factors NASA considers in crew selection
- Technical expertise and the skills required for the mission.
- Personality mix and the crew’s ability to work together under stress.
- Previous spaceflight experience and the need to balance experienced and less-experienced members.
- Astronaut body size and spacesuit compatibility.
- Russian-language capability when a mission or partner-operations role requires it.
- Training progress, current qualifications and demonstrated performance.
- Vehicle, payload, international-partner and mission-specific requirements.
NASA’s stated process requires astronauts to be medically qualified before a spaceflight mission, but medical qualification is only one gate. A qualified astronaut can wait for a later assignment, support a mission from the ground or train for a role that has not yet been announced. Saying that person was “grounded” can therefore create a false medical implication.
A useful hypothetical example
Imagine two astronauts who both pass annual medical recertification. One has the exact robotic-arm experience and physical dimensions required for an upcoming mission, while the other has stronger language skills needed for a partner-operations assignment. Selecting the first astronaut for the flight does not disqualify the second. The second may remain on flight status, train for another mission or take a ground assignment while waiting.

Career changes that end regular flight assignments
Astronauts do not remain in active flight rotations indefinitely. A qualified astronaut may move into management, engineering, science, training, administrative work or another NASA position. Such a move can reduce or end active mission assignments without indicating illness or a safety violation.
The public record does not provide one universal taxonomy or a reliable percentage for every career route. To explain an individual case, use the astronaut’s NASA biography, a mission announcement or an official agency statement that identifies the person’s new role and the date of the change. Do not infer a medical cause merely because an astronaut has spent years in a ground position.
Retirement is a separate outcome
Retirement ends an astronaut’s active employment or corps assignment, but it is not the same as medical disqualification. An astronaut can retire after a successful career, after transferring to another job or for personal reasons. The words “retired,” “reassigned” and “removed from flight status” should be used only when the official record supports that exact description.

Agency-policy and safety actions
NASA aircraft policy provides a separate operational pathway. After an aircraft mishap or a high-visibility close call, aircrew may be removed from flight status temporarily while safety officials review what happened. This action protects the investigation and reduces operational risk; it does not by itself establish that the aircrew member has a medical problem or will never fly again.

What a temporary operational removal can mean
- The person may be unavailable for aircraft duties while an investigation or review proceeds.
- The restriction may apply to a particular aircraft or operation rather than to every NASA flight or spaceflight duty.
- Restoration can depend on the findings, corrective actions, training, supervision or formal approval.
- The action can be unrelated to astronaut mission certification.
Because NPR 7900.3D addresses NASA aircraft operations, a statement that an aircrew member was removed from aircraft flight status should not automatically be rewritten as “NASA grounded the astronaut from space.” The underlying document and the date determine which meaning applies.
Does age automatically remove an astronaut from flight status?
The cited NASA standards support medical, operational and mission-assignment criteria, not a universal age cutoff. Age can affect an individual’s medical evaluation, experience profile, career plans or mission suitability, but it is not accurate to claim that NASA automatically removes astronauts at a fixed age without a case-specific source.
When an article or biography mentions an older astronaut leaving active flight duties, check whether the official explanation says medical restriction, reassignment, retirement, mission selection or another reason. If the record does not identify a cause, the responsible description is that the person was no longer assigned or no longer active in that role—not that age alone caused disqualification.
What happens after an astronaut leaves flight status?
Leaving flight status does not automatically end NASA medical support. NASA describes continuing care after missions and after retirement. The Lifetime Surveillance of Astronaut Health program follows former astronauts and helps monitor possible long-term effects associated with spaceflight.

The TREAT Astronauts Act authorizes NASA to monitor, diagnose and treat medical and psychological conditions associated with spaceflight for former astronauts. NASA’s health-care standards also describe care continuing beyond retirement from the astronaut corps. Consequently, a former flight crew member may remain connected to NASA medical programs even when no longer eligible for a mission or no longer employed by the agency.
How to verify a claim about a named astronaut
- Identify the exact phrase used in the original announcement: “removed from flight status,” “medically disqualified,” “not assigned,” “reassigned” or “retired.”
- Determine whether the document concerns NASA aircraft operations or spaceflight eligibility.
- Check the effective date. A temporary restriction after an incident is different from a later permanent career change.
- Look for an official NASA biography, mission announcement, medical statement or investigation report that gives the reason.
- Separate a documented fact from an inference. If NASA does not disclose a medical detail, do not supply one.
This approach also prevents a common error: treating a long period without a mission as proof that an astronaut failed medical certification. Crew assignments can change for skills, language, training, performance, vehicle compatibility, partner coordination or schedule reasons.
What the public record does—and does not—show
NASA’s authoritative material does not publish a dependable count or percentage of astronauts who leave flight status for medical, career or agency-policy reasons. There is therefore no defensible overall rate to quote. The documented framework is qualitative: medical review can produce restrictions, waivers or disqualification; operations policy can produce temporary removal after a mishap or close call; and career and crew-selection decisions can leave a medically qualified astronaut without a current flight.

Bottom line
NASA astronauts leave flight status through several distinct pathways. Medical review may impose a temporary restriction, grant a waiver or determine disqualification. Aircraft-operations policy permits temporary removal after a mishap or high-visibility close call. Crew selection can leave a medically qualified astronaut unassigned, and career changes can move an astronaut into management, technical work or retirement. None of those facts, by itself, proves the others. The only reliable explanation for a named astronaut is the specific status, reason and date documented by NASA.
