Nano Banana 2.1 distorts text and changes visual details because Google’s own model card lists blurry small text, failures with long passages, imperfect character consistency, partial instruction following, and occasional left/right confusion as remaining limitations. The model can create convincing images, but it is not a precision typesetting or identity-preservation system. Use short, checked copy, higher output resolution when available, reference images for recurring subjects, and iterative review rather than trusting the first render.
What causes the distorted text and changing details?
Nano Banana 2.1 is a generative image and conversational-editing model. It predicts a complete visual result from your prompt, supplied images, and conversation context; it does not lay out every character with the deterministic rules used by a desktop publishing application. A result can therefore look coherent overall while still containing a misspelling, altered number, changed facial feature, or misplaced object.
Google DeepMind’s Nano Banana 2.1 model card explicitly records five relevant limitations:
Recommended Free Tools
- Small text can render poorly. The card describes small text as often blurry in the 1K model.
- Long text is unreliable. Long paragraphs and page-length text are listed as problem areas.
- Character consistency is imperfect. A person, mascot, or fictional character can change between the reference and the generated result.
- Instruction following can be partial. The model may satisfy the broad request while missing a constraint such as an exact count, color, or arrangement.
- Spatial localization can be confused. Left and right, and similar positional relationships, may not be interpreted as requested.
These are documented quality limitations, not a published promise that every prompt will fail. Google also describes the model as intended for professional image creation and editing, clear text on posters and diagrams, localized text in several languages, and multi-image fusion. The capability and the limitation apply at the same time: the model may produce excellent lettering in one design and a visibly wrong word in the next.

Why is text especially blurry or misspelled?
1K is the default output
Google’s Gemini API documentation lists 1K as Nano Banana 2.1’s default output resolution, with 2K and 4K also available. The model card specifically calls out small text as often blurry at 1K. At that size, a poster headline may remain readable while a disclaimer, label, menu item, or chart annotation becomes soft or malformed.
Resolution does not create a guarantee of correct spelling. More pixels can give letterforms more room, but the model still has to infer the intended characters and arrange them in the scene. Treat 2K or 4K as a better-detail attempt, not as a proofing system.
Long copy increases the failure surface
A short title gives the model fewer characters and fewer line-break decisions. A paragraph, page-length block, or dense infographic requires many exact relationships to remain correct at once. Google’s model card groups long paragraphs and page-length text with poor text rendering, so a prompt that asks for a full article page inside an image is outside the model’s most dependable use case.
Text is part of a generated scene
When words are requested inside a generated image, the model must satisfy visual goals such as perspective, lighting, material, and composition while also approximating language. A sign viewed at an angle, curved lettering, tiny labels, and text over a textured background all add visual constraints. The practical result is that “looks like a menu” can be met without every menu item being exact.

What the official documentation establishes
| Issue | What Google documents | What you should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Small text | Often blurry in the 1K model | Check labels, footnotes, prices, dates, and captions at the final display size. |
| Long paragraphs or page-length text | Listed under known text-rendering limitations | Use short essential copy or add the text in a separate layout tool. |
| Character identity | “Character consistency is not always perfect between input images and generated output image.” | Inspect clothing, hair, face, accessories, body shape, and age in every iteration. |
| Instruction following | Some instructions may be followed only partially | Make constraints explicit, limit the number of simultaneous changes, and verify each one. |
| Spatial relationships | Localization such as left versus right can be confused | Specify the viewpoint and confirm placement visually. |
The Gemini Nano Banana 2.1 API page was last updated October 6, 2026. It describes 1K, 2K, and 4K outputs and reports improvements in visual quality, text rendering, infographic layout, and multi-image fusion in the October 2026 update. Those are improvement claims; they do not remove the known limitations in the model card.
How to get more accurate text
Google’s Gemini image-generation documentation and Firebase AI Logic guide recommend a text-first workflow. It separates the wording decision from the image-generation decision and makes proofreading possible before the final composition.
- Write and check the copy first. Prepare the exact headline, labels, numbers, and punctuation in plain text. Keep essential wording short, especially when the output will be 1K.
- Ask the model to generate the text before the image. Have it return or confirm the wording in the conversation. This gives you a chance to correct spelling and capitalization before the visual prompt.
- Use the confirmed copy in the image prompt. Put the exact words in quotation marks or a clearly labeled block, and state where each important item belongs.
- Describe hierarchy, not a whole page of prose. Specify a title, a few labels, and the key values. For a long explanation, create the background image first and add the paragraph later in a publishing or design application.
- Choose the intended output size. If small labels matter, request 2K or 4K when your API or app access offers those options. Do not assume that a larger file fixes a misspelling.
- Proofread the rendered image. Read every word, digit, symbol, and line break at the size at which people will see it. A zoomed-in preview can hide blur that is obvious in the final placement.
- Regenerate only the failed area when possible. Keep the successful composition and request a targeted edit rather than changing the entire prompt.
Google does not state that this workflow guarantees exact spelling or typography. It reduces avoidable ambiguity while leaving the model’s documented rendering limitations in place.

Use reference images deliberately
The API documentation says Nano Banana 2.1 can accept up to 14 reference images. It describes up to four character references for character consistency and up to ten object references for object fidelity. Choose references that clearly show the identity-defining features instead of supplying many near-duplicates.

- For a character, include a clear face, the important hairstyle, clothing details, and any distinctive accessory.
- For an object, show the shape, markings, logo placement, color, and relevant sides or components.
- Tell the model which reference establishes identity and which reference establishes pose, lighting, or setting.
- Ask for one targeted change at a time, such as “keep the same jacket and face; change only the background.”
Audit the result for identity drift
Compare the output with the references rather than judging it only as a new image. Look for altered facial proportions, eye color, hair length, clothing seams, missing accessories, changed object geometry, or a different number of components. The model card still warns that consistency can fail, so references improve the odds but do not establish a lock.
Prefer iterative edits over a completely new scene
Once the composition is close, preserve it in the conversation and request a narrow correction. A fresh generation gives the model another opportunity to reinterpret every subject. If the edit introduces a new defect, return to the last acceptable version and change one variable at a time.
Why left and right can be reversed
Google lists spatial localization as a remaining issue, including confusion about left and right. A prompt that simply says “put the lamp on the left” can be ambiguous because left may mean the subject’s left or the viewer’s left.

A troubleshooting checklist for a failed image
| Symptom | Likely documented limitation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Headline is readable but small labels are mushy | Small-text rendering, especially at 1K | Shorten labels, request 2K or 4K, or add labels separately. |
| A sentence contains invented or missing words | Long-text rendering and partial instruction following | Use the text-first workflow and replace long passages with concise labels. |
| A familiar character has different clothes or facial details | Imperfect character consistency | Add focused reference images and make a single targeted edit. |
| An object appears on the wrong side | Spatial localization confusion | State the viewer’s viewpoint and regenerate only the placement. |
| Fixing one defect creates another | Generative variation during editing | Revert to the last good version and change one instruction at a time. |
Keep a simple acceptance check before publishing an image:
- Read all visible words and numbers against the approved copy.
- Check the image at its actual web, print, or presentation size.
- Compare every recurring character or object with its references.
- Verify left/right, front/back, count, and alignment from the stated viewpoint.
- Confirm that an edit did not alter a feature that was meant to remain unchanged.
When Nano Banana Pro may be worth trying
Gemini Apps Help says paid subscribers can redo an image with Nano Banana Pro for additional detail, particularly for text rendering or infographics. Access, subscription requirements, regional availability, and the exact model selector can change, so check the current Gemini app before relying on this option.
A Pro redo is an alternative workflow, not evidence that every spelling, layout, or identity error will be resolved. Preserve the original image, compare the redo against the approved text and references, and use the version that passes your own inspection.
How to interpret the published benchmark figures
The model card reports comparative evaluation results, not a universal probability that a user’s text will be correct. For text-to-image overall preference, it lists 1,050 ± 14 for Nano Banana 2.1 with Thinking and 1,015 ± 13 without Thinking, compared with 990 ± 7 for Gemini 3.1 Flash Image with Thinking and 935 ± 8 for Gemini 3 Pro Image. These are model-card evaluation scores; they are not percentages, spelling accuracy rates, or a guarantee for a particular prompt.

Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
For infographic factuality, the card reports 0.521 for Nano Banana 2.1 Thinking, 0.328 without Thinking, 0.179 for Gemini 3.1 Flash Image Thinking, and 0.265 for Gemini 3 Pro Image. The document does not define these values as a general user-facing accuracy percentage. They should be read as results from the stated evaluation, not converted into “the model is correct X percent of the time.”
Google has not published a general failure rate covering distorted text or changing details across prompts, languages, resolutions, and editing sessions. Any precise percentage presented for that broad question would overstate what the official documentation establishes.
How to compare another image model fairly
If you are deciding whether a different generator fits a text-heavy or identity-sensitive workflow, use the same prompt, references, output size, and acceptance checks for each system. Compare these dimensions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Comparison axis | What to measure |
|---|---|
| Text | Spelling and legibility of small labels at the final intended resolution. |
| Identity | Whether facial, clothing, shape, and marking details survive repeated edits. |
| Spatial instructions | Whether left/right, counts, alignment, and relative positions are followed. |
| Workflow | Support for reference images, conversational edits, text-first preparation, and targeted regeneration. |
| Access | Model availability, plan requirements, regional access, and current pricing. |
Run the comparison with representative work rather than a single showcase prompt. A model that handles a large poster title may still struggle with a table of tiny values; a model that preserves a face in one pose may change it after a lighting or wardrobe edit.
A practical decision rule
Use Nano Banana 2.1 for concepts, illustrations, posters with limited copy, and iterative visual edits when you can review the output. For legally, financially, medically, or operationally important wording, generate the visual elements separately and typeset the final text with a deterministic tool. For recurring characters or branded objects, provide focused references and inspect every version. The model’s documented strengths make it useful, but its documented limitations make human verification part of the workflow.
