An NVMe SSD can move data much faster than a SATA SSD, but that does not mean storage is what makes every slow task feel slow. My first upgrade taught me to look at the workload and the whole data path before blaming the drive: faster storage helps most when the task is actually waiting on storage and can use the drive’s strengths.
What an NVMe upgrade can—and cannot—speed up
NVMe SSDs are designed to handle storage requests efficiently. Microsoft says they offer greater command queue depths, more efficient interrupt processing, and greater efficiency for 4 KB commands, with particular relevance to workloads that require heavy simultaneous I/O. That makes NVMe useful for high-I/O or latency-sensitive work; it is not a promise that every app, boot, or game will become noticeably faster. See Microsoft’s Server Hardware Performance Considerations.
The important distinction is between a drive’s capability and a task’s demand. A workload that issues many suitable requests may benefit from NVMe’s ability to handle them. A task held up elsewhere may not. An advertised sequential read speed describes a particular kind of data transfer; it does not diagnose your computer or predict the time every real task will take.

Throughput, IOPS, and latency answer different questions
Storage performance is not one number. NVIDIA’s Benchmarking and Configuration Guide distinguishes three useful measures:
#1 Best Overall
- MEET THE NEXT GEN: Consider this a cheat code; Our Samsung 990 PRO Gen4 SSD helps you reach near max performance with lightning-fast speeds; Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or a tech guru, you’ll get power efficiency built for the final boss
- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
- Throughput is the rate at which data moves, often expressed in bytes per second. Sequential benchmarks commonly emphasize this measure.
- IOPS means input/output operations per second. It indicates how many individual storage operations a system handles, which matters when a workload generates many small requests.
- Latency is the time an operation takes. It can matter to responsiveness even when the total amount of data transferred is small.
A high sequential-throughput result alone cannot tell you whether an application is waiting on storage, whether its requests match the benchmark’s pattern, or how long the full task will take. NVIDIA also notes that expected performance depends on specifications and configuration together. Compare the workload-relevant measure and the configured data path, not just the largest speed printed on a drive listing.
How to tell whether storage is the bottleneck
- Name the task that feels slow. Be specific: launching one application, loading a particular game level, copying a large file, or exporting a project are different workloads.
- Observe the stage doing the waiting. During the slowdown, check whether the task is actively reading or writing storage and whether storage activity coincides with the delay. Also observe the CPU, GPU, memory, and—if the task depends on it—network activity. A single overall “busy” reading is not enough to identify the cause.
- Match the evidence to the workload. Look at throughput, IOPS, or latency as appropriate, and consider how the storage interface and rest of the data path are configured. For a game, for example, asset delivery and processing matter alongside reading data from the drive.
- Upgrade only if the constrained stage is one the new drive can improve. If evidence points to storage behavior that a faster, compatible drive can address, an upgrade may help. If the work is waiting on another component or on how the software handles it, a faster sequential specification may not change the result.
This is a diagnostic method, not a claim that a particular computer has a particular bottleneck. A benchmark is evidence about the system, workload, and software used for that measurement—not a universal prediction for another PC.

Why game loading depends on more than the SSD
Microsoft describes DirectStorage as an API game developers can use to make better use of high-speed NVMe storage when loading assets. But reading the data is only one part of that pipeline: request overhead and latency, batching, decompression, and delivery of data toward the GPU can all affect the result. Microsoft’s DirectStorage Developer Guidance explains these implementation considerations. A fast drive cannot by itself ensure a game uses the relevant features or eliminate delays elsewhere.

This is a historical example tied to those figures, not a current universal benchmark for games. The post is DirectStorage is coming to PC.

A separate, bounded example shows why test results need context. PCWorld reported that in one Forspoken scene on its tested Windows 11 desktop, a Samsung 860 EVO SATA SSD took 7.4 seconds while an MSI M480 PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive took 1.9 seconds. Those are results from that publication’s specific system, scene, and benchmark conditions—not a forecast of what another PC or game will gain. PCWorld also cautioned that DirectStorage would have little impact on most existing games. Read the PCWorld test and its stated conditions.

First establish whether your computer supports the drive’s physical format and interface. M.2 describes a physical form factor, while NVMe is a storage protocol; an M.2 slot does not, by itself, establish that a particular NVMe drive is compatible. Check the computer or motherboard documentation for support, PCIe generation and lanes, physical clearance, and supported capacity. Microsoft’s All about SSD, HDD, and storage types explains common storage types, but compatibility for a specific computer must be confirmed from its documentation.

Then decide whether the real need is more space or faster performance. If your current drive is nearly full, capacity may be the practical problem; a faster drive with too little room will not solve it. If the complaint is slow performance, use the workload checks above before paying for a higher speed rating. Compare candidate drives on compatibility, capacity, workload-relevant performance, and current price using up-to-date device and product information.
