Because the first price you see may not be the amount you pay. Online booking fees, seat tiers and premium screening formats can change the total, and the rules vary by theater and transaction. Compare the final checkout total for the exact theater, showtime and seats you want before paying.
Why does a movie ticket cost more at checkout?
The starting price is only one component of the purchase. Depending on the theater and how you buy, the total may include a booking fee, a surcharge for a particular seat or a premium format, and taxes or optional items. A price shown for one theater or showtime is not necessarily comparable with another.

Online booking fees
Some theater chains charge a convenience or booking fee for tickets bought through their website or app. Regal says online convenience fees are not refunded under its stated policy; its Tickets and Cancellations Help Center also describes possible format-related surcharges. AMC’s indexed official FAQ says it charges a convenience fee per ticket purchased through its website or app and describes a waiver for qualifying AMC Stubs purchases made through listed third-party services. The AMC page could not be opened because it redirected to a queue, so verify its current terms before relying on the waiver.

Seat and format pricing
A seat’s location or a screening’s format can also affect the price. In 2023, the Associated Press reported that AMC’s Sightline program charged more for some preferred middle seats and less for some front seats at participating locations. The report gave a historical example of middle seats costing $1–$2 more. That is not a current quote or a rule for every AMC theater.
Premium large-format and 3D showings may also cost more than standard screenings. The Associated Press reported in 2023 that a 3D premium-format ticket for Avatar: The Way of Water averaged about $16.50; that was a historical example for that film, not a current estimate or an industry-wide average. Check the price for the specific seat and format on the screen before you select it.

What should you compare before paying?
Compare like with like: the same theater, showtime, ticket count, seats and screening format. A lower starting price may not produce a lower total once per-ticket fees or surcharges appear.
Recommended Free Tools
- Total at checkout: Compare the final amount for the same number of tickets, not just the advertised starting price.
- Fee basis: See whether a booking fee is per ticket or per order and whether your account or purchase method qualifies for a waiver.
- Seat and format: Check whether a different seat or standard-format showing changes the total; do not assume it will.
- Refund terms: Review the theater’s current policy for ticket cancellations and whether any booking fee is returned.
- Buying channel: If the theater offers both online and in-person sales, compare the stated terms. Buying in person does not universally guarantee that fees disappear.
Do ticket-price rules require fees to appear upfront?
The Federal Trade Commission’s May 2025 staff FAQ says businesses covered by its live-event ticket rule must show the total price, including mandatory fees, when advertising prices. Under that guidance, taxes and genuinely optional add-ons can be excluded from the upfront total but must be disclosed before payment. The FAQ also says dynamic pricing is allowed if pricing information is not misleading.

The reviewed FTC materials do not establish whether movie-theater tickets fall within the rule’s covered-event scope. So it would be too broad to say that the rule definitively governs every cinema ticket. Read the FTC’s Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees: Frequently Asked Questions and its May 2025 announcement for the agency’s stated guidance and rule information.

The Beer v. Fandango settlement site describes allegations about when convenience fees were disclosed for California theater purchases made from June 11, 2020, through June 17, 2024, plus separate FanClub membership allegations involving California and Washington consumers. Fandango denied the allegations; the settlement notice is not a finding that it broke the law.

The site listed an August 17, 2026 claim deadline, which had passed as of October 11, 2026. It described a $3.25 cash benefit or voucher for eligible convenience-fee settlement class members and a $7.50 voucher for eligible FanClub class members. Eligibility and terms are limited to the classes described on the official Beer v. Fandango settlement site; these amounts are not general refunds available to all moviegoers.

How to make checkout less of a guessing game
- Choose the exact theater and showtime first; location and format can affect the price.
- Select your ticket count and seats, then review the full checkout total before entering payment details.
- Open the theater’s current FAQ or cancellation policy to check booking fees, member waivers and refund terms.
- If you have flexibility, compare another seat or a standard-format screening and look at the updated total rather than assuming it will be cheaper.
- Use settlement notices only to check whether you meet a specific class definition and deadline; do not treat an allegation as proof of wrongdoing or an offer open to everyone.
