More accurate AI can use more energy when the extra accuracy comes from doing more computation: training a larger model, processing longer inputs, generating longer answers, or spending additional time searching and checking possible solutions. Accuracy itself does not consume electricity; the computation used to achieve it does.

The relationship is not automatic. A smaller task-specific model, selective architectures, efficient serving, and newer hardware can deliver a required quality level with less energy than a larger general-purpose system. The meaningful comparison is therefore energy per completed task at the same quality target, not a universal number of watt-hours per prompt.

Accuracy is an outcome, not an energy setting

When people say an AI model is “more accurate,” they usually mean it makes fewer errors on a defined benchmark or task. That improvement can come from additional computation, better data, a different architecture, or task-specific tuning. Only some of those routes directly increase the electricity used for each request.

Training energy

Training creates or updates the model’s weights. It may involve thousands of accelerator-hours, repeated experiments, data processing, and evaluation. A larger model generally requires more operations during training, but training is a one-time or occasional cost for a particular model release. Fine-tuning or retraining adds further energy later.

Inference energy

Inference is the repeated process of serving a user’s request. It is the variable cost that becomes important when a model handles millions or billions of requests. Every prompt is processed and every output token is generated on hardware, so a modest per-request difference can become a large system-wide demand.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) summarizes the basic relationship this way: “longer input queries and output answers require more compute and therefore consume more electricity.” Its Energy and AI report also identifies model size, input and output modality, algorithmic efficiency, inference-time scaling, and hardware as determinants of inference energy (IEA, 2025).

Why a single AI answer can require more computation

Larger models perform more operations

Increasing parameter count usually gives a model more capacity to represent language, facts, and relationships. At inference, however, more parameters generally mean more arithmetic and memory movement for each token. Holding the prompt, output, hardware, and serving method constant, a larger dense model therefore tends to use more energy per answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Parameter count alone is not a complete measure. A model can contain many total parameters while activating only a subset for a particular token. Conversely, an apparently smaller model may be inefficiently served or may need many more generated tokens to reach the same answer quality.

Longer prompts and outputs increase work

Every input token must be read and incorporated into the model’s computation. Generating an answer requires another sequence of token-by-token operations. Long documents, detailed instructions, code, and conversation history increase the input work; verbose answers, structured reasoning, and tool results increase the output work.

Long contexts also consume memory for attention and key-value caches. Managing that memory can affect both energy and the number of requests that fit concurrently on an accelerator. The IEA notes that batch size, key-value-cache management, attention management, and other operational choices change the energy intensity of the same nominal model (IEA, 2025).

Reasoning and test-time scaling spend extra compute

Some systems deliberately allocate more computation at response time. They may generate an internal chain of intermediate tokens, revise an initial answer, sample several candidate solutions, run a verifier, or call tools before returning a result. This is often called inference-time or test-time compute scaling: the model “thinks” longer on difficult questions instead of using the same fixed amount of work for every request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The approach can improve mathematical, coding, and planning performance, but the extra tokens and evaluations raise energy per request. In production, long reasoning can also reduce serving concurrency because each request occupies memory and an accelerator for longer. That makes the energy increase larger than token count alone would suggest.

Images and video are heavier modalities

Text is not the only input or output. Image understanding, image generation, video generation, and multimodal interactions involve additional encoders, decoders, or denoising steps. The IEA reports that image and video generation are generally more compute-intensive than text generation. Comparing a text prompt with a video-generation request as though they were equivalent “queries” produces a misleading energy figure.

How inference choices change energy

Choice Why it can increase energy What can moderate the cost
More model parameters More arithmetic and memory movement per token Sparse activation, quantization, and a smaller model matched to the task
Longer input More tokens to read and retain in attention and caches Retrieving only relevant passages and removing duplicated context
Longer output Each generated token requires another decoding step Concise output limits and structured response formats
Test-time reasoning Extra internal tokens, candidate solutions, revisions, or tool calls Route only difficult requests to extended reasoning
Image or video generation Additional modality-specific and iterative computations Lower resolution, fewer frames, and task-appropriate models
Low serving concurrency Accelerators do less useful work per unit of time while requests wait or run alone Batching, scheduling, cache reuse, and optimized kernels

More reasoning can be dramatically more expensive

A 2025 preprint by Yunho Jin, Gu-Yeon Wei, and David Brooks experimentally compared model scaling with test-time compute on Qwen2.5 models of 1.5B, 7B, 14B, and 32B parameters using A100 GPUs across math, coding, and common-sense benchmarks. The authors found that test-time compute sometimes delivered a better accuracy-energy trade-off than simply increasing model size, particularly on complex reasoning tasks. But indiscriminate use of test-time compute also produced a maximum reported energy amplification of 97.48 times in one 7B coding benchmark (Jin, Wei, and Brooks, 2025).

That 97.48× result is a benchmark-specific experimental extreme, not a normal multiplier for every reasoning request. It demonstrates why a system should not apply the most expensive reasoning policy to easy classification, extraction, or rewriting tasks.

Microsoft Research’s April 2026 paper in Joule estimates optimized frontier-scale inference at a median of 0.31 watt-hours per query, with an interquartile range of 0.16–0.60 Wh, under the authors’ realistic large-scale deployment assumptions. The estimate is model-based, not a universal measurement for every commercial model or user prompt. The same paper estimates that long reasoning and agentic queries can consume more than an order of magnitude more energy because they generate more tokens and reduce serving concurrency. In a scenario where 10% of daily requests are long reasoning queries, the authors estimate total demand could more than double (Microsoft Research, 2026).

Accuracy and energy are not locked together

Mixture-of-experts models activate selectively

Mixture-of-experts (MoE) architectures contain specialized components but route each token through only a subset of them. The total parameter count can therefore be large without activating every parameter for every token. The IEA identifies selective activation as a way to preserve performance while reducing computation and energy compared with activating the full model each time (IEA, 2025).

Task-specific models can beat general-purpose models on efficiency

A model optimized for one task may need far less computation than a frontier general-purpose model. A 2026 Scientific Reports inference study compared zero-shot large language models with traditional models fine-tuned on task data, so its results are not a perfectly matched head-to-head test. In one Yelp text-classification example, Qwen 2.5 7B achieved 0.60 accuracy versus 0.68 for Qwen 2.5 72B while using one-eighth the reported energy; across the study’s comparison of relatively accurate models, the 7B model used seven times less energy with a reported 0.07-point accuracy reduction (Scientific Reports, 2026). The result supports evaluating the model for the actual task, not assuming that the largest model is the most efficient choice.

Hardware improves energy per operation

Newer accelerators can perform more floating-point operations per watt. The IEA, citing EpochAI (2025c), reports that a B200 is 60% more energy-efficient by FLOP/watt than an H100, while an H100 is 80% more efficient than an A100 (IEA hardware comparison, 2025). FLOP/watt is an efficiency measure, not a promise that a complete answer will consume a fixed amount of electricity: memory traffic, utilization, cooling, batching, and software also matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Serving software affects the result

Kernel optimizations, quantization, batching, speculative decoding, cache reuse, and request routing can reduce energy without changing the model’s nominal accuracy. The trade-off is that batching may increase latency, while aggressive quantization can reduce quality on some tasks. Any claim of “efficient inference” should state the quality target and the serving conditions under which it was measured.

Evidence from other model families shows diminishing returns

Yang and Armour analyzed 1,200 ImageNet classification models and found a steep decline in accuracy gains relative to increases in inference energy in that vision-model setting. This is an example of diminishing marginal returns: the first improvements may be relatively inexpensive, while pushing an already strong model toward the last few points of benchmark accuracy can require disproportionately more computation. The finding concerns image classification and should not be generalized to every language, vision, or multimodal system (Yang and Armour, ICML/PMLR, 2025).

How to compare two AI systems fairly

Energy claims are meaningful only when the systems are evaluated on the same task and quality target. Use this checklist before accepting a comparison:

  • Quality: Compare accuracy, task success, or another clearly defined metric on the same dataset.
  • Boundary: Establish whether the number covers accelerator electricity only, the whole server, cooling, or the full lifecycle.
  • Workload: Record input tokens, output tokens, images or video, tool calls, and the share of long reasoning requests.
  • Computation: Note total parameters, activated parameters, precision, quantization, and whether multiple candidates are sampled.
  • Hardware: Identify the accelerator type, number of devices, utilization, and region if available.
  • Serving: Record batch size, concurrency, cache handling, scheduling, and latency target.
  • Evidence type: Separate controlled experiments from production-scale modeled estimates.

Do not compare a per-query operational estimate with a model’s total training energy, or treat results from unrelated benchmarks as a universal ranking.

What developers can do to reduce energy without giving up needed accuracy

  1. Define the quality threshold first. Decide the minimum acceptable accuracy, pass rate, or human-review rate for the task. Optimizing an undefined notion of “best” encourages unnecessary computation.
  2. Route requests by difficulty. Use a small or fast model for routine extraction, classification, and drafting. Escalate ambiguous or high-risk cases to a larger model or extended reasoning policy.
  3. Control context and output length. Retrieve relevant passages instead of sending entire histories, remove duplicate instructions, and set output limits appropriate to the user’s need.
  4. Measure test-time compute. Track internal tokens, candidate count, revisions, tool calls, and verifier passes. Disable expensive deliberation when it does not improve the task metric.
  5. Benchmark serving configurations. Measure energy and latency with realistic concurrency, batching, cache policies, and hardware rather than relying on parameter count alone.
  6. Consider sparse or compressed models. Mixture-of-experts routing, quantization, distillation, and smaller task-specific models can reduce activated computation, provided quality is checked on the real workload.
  7. Report energy with conditions. Publish the model version, hardware, workload, measurement boundary, and date so another team can interpret the number correctly.

Why per-query efficiency still matters at large scale

Reducing energy per answer does not automatically reduce total electricity use. If lower costs lead an organization to run many more requests, aggregate demand can remain high or rise; the cited studies establish the technical efficiency mechanisms but do not quantify that potential rebound effect. Conversely, a small number of very long agentic jobs can dominate a workload that contains many short prompts.

The practical question is therefore two-dimensional: how much energy does one successful task require, and how many such tasks will the system perform? A model that is slightly less accurate but seven times more efficient may be the sensible choice for a high-volume classification queue, while a costly reasoning model may be justified for a safety-critical design or complex debugging task.

Bottom line for users

When an AI system “thinks harder,” it usually consumes more electricity because it performs more token generation, evaluations, memory operations, or tool calls. Larger models and longer prompts also tend to increase work. But accuracy does not have a fixed energy price: selective architectures, task-specific models, better serving, and more efficient hardware can change the trade-off substantially. Treat every watt-hour figure as conditional on the model, task, hardware, and deployment assumptions behind it.
