Mooneva Cycle’s author says the app was built around a simple premise: tracking a menstrual cycle should not require an account or a centralized database. The project describes itself as a free, open-source tracker for web, iOS and Android that keeps cycle records on the user’s device. Its reported stack—React 19, TypeScript, Vite 6 and Capacitor 8—supports a shared web interface with native mobile capabilities. Those privacy and feature details are project claims, not independently verified findings about current releases.
Why build a period tracker without a cloud account?
The author’s engineering question was, “What if the server simply didn’t exist?” In Mooneva Cycle’s stated design, users do not need to register with an email address or phone number, and cycle history is not meant to be stored in a centralized service. The project says records remain on the device, using localStorage or secure storage.
This changes the privacy trade-off. A service without a central cycle-history database has less of that particular data for an attacker to obtain through a breach of its server, and the project says it does not include analytics, advertising SDKs or crash reporting. Those are claims made by the project; the available account does not establish how every platform build stores data or whether any particular release sends network traffic.

Local storage is not a guarantee that information cannot be exposed. Someone with access to an unlocked device may be able to view it; operating-system behavior, device backups, app permissions and implementation defects also matter. The project article’s statement that data which never leaves a device “cannot be leaked or compromised” is best understood as a design aspiration, not a security guarantee.

How React and Capacitor fit the project
The author reports using React 19 and TypeScript for the interface, Vite 6 to build it, and Capacitor 8 to connect the web app to iOS and Android. The project also names Tailwind CSS, i18next, html2pdf.js, Vitest and React Testing Library in its stack.
Capacitor’s official React guidance describes a workflow in which developers build a web app, add native iOS and Android projects, and call native device APIs from JavaScript. That explains how a React-based interface can be adapted for mobile functions such as local notifications. It does not verify that Mooneva Cycle currently builds successfully, is available in app stores, or implements those functions correctly.

What the project says happens to cycle data
The project’s “zero-cloud” description refers to its intended storage model: cycle history is kept locally rather than synced to a remote account. The author describes localStorage and secure storage, but does not provide enough platform-specific detail to establish which data goes where on each operating system, how it is protected at rest, or how it behaves in device backups.

For backup portability, the author describes deriving an encryption key from a password with PBKDF2 and using AES-GCM for authenticated encryption. The author-posted implementation describes PBKDF2 with SHA-256 and 250,000 iterations. That figure is a parameter in the described sample flow, not a benchmark or independent security assessment. Encryption’s practical protection also depends on the implementation and the strength and secrecy of the password.

A user-managed encrypted export can make data portable without requiring a cloud account, but it shifts responsibility: users need to keep the export and remember its password. The available account does not describe a remote recovery mechanism, so losing the file or password may mean losing access to that backup.

The author describes notifications as locally scheduled through Capacitor rather than triggered by cloud push services. Prediction dates and reminders are organizational aids, not evidence of clinical reliability. No clinical validation or prediction-performance study is established in the available material. Likewise, the reported PDF export should not be treated as a standardized medical record or a clinician-approved report format.
Who may find this design useful—and what it asks of them
A local-first tracker may suit someone who wants to avoid creating an account or placing cycle history in a service’s centralized database. It may also appeal to people who value source availability: the author says Mooneva Cycle is free and licensed under GPL-3.0. Those statements are project-reported; confirming the current license and release status requires checking the project’s current repository and distribution listings.

The same design involves practical compromises. Without account-based sync, users should not assume their records will automatically appear on a new phone. An encrypted export can provide a way to move data, but the user must manage the file and password. The reported import options could help people bring history from another tracker, though compatibility with current export formats has not been established.
For anyone evaluating the app for sensitive information, useful checks include reviewing the current source and license, inspecting the permissions requested by the installed build, and understanding how local data and backups are handled on the device. The project’s privacy approach is a design proposition; the available sources do not constitute an audit of its code, binaries, network traffic, storage or cryptographic implementation.
