MLB blackouts are geographic rights restrictions, not technical failures. A game can be unavailable on MLB.TV because your location is inside a club’s home television territory, because the game has a national exclusive, or because both rules apply. The same territory rule can follow a team when it plays at home or on the road, even if no local channel is showing that game.
To watch legally, check your ZIP code and the specific game first. Then choose the official in-market service, an existing pay-TV provider, MLB.TV for an out-of-market game, or the national rights partner listed for that game. No single subscription removes every blackout.

What an MLB blackout means
A blackout prevents a video stream from being shown in a particular location because distribution rights for that territory belong to another outlet. MLB, individual clubs, regional sports networks and national media partners divide those rights. Streaming services must enforce the same contracts that govern television broadcasts.
MLB’s subscription information describes eligibility in terms of your physical location and home television territory. Location can be estimated with signals such as your internet Protocol (IP) address, and the restrictions can change as rights agreements and schedules change. A blackout therefore concerns where you are watching, not simply which team you support or how far you live from a stadium.

Why your location can block a game
Home television territories cover more than the stadium city
Each club has a designated home television territory. If you are inside that territory, the out-of-market stream may be blocked so the local rights holder can distribute the game. MLB states that this restriction applies whether the club is playing at home or away. It can also apply when the game is not televised in that territory; the contractual territory still controls eligibility.
National exclusivity is a separate rule
Some regular-season and postseason games are reserved for a national media partner. Those games may be unavailable through both MLB.TV and a club’s in-market service, even when you are outside the team’s local territory. The outlet varies by game, so the listing for that date is more reliable than a general assumption about your subscription.
Blackouts are not caused by your internet speed
A slow connection can cause buffering, but it does not create a contractual blackout. Replacing a router, buying an antenna or using a different streaming device cannot grant rights to a restricted video feed. Hardware matters for playback quality only after the service confirms that the game is available in your location.
Check the restriction before you subscribe
Use a location-and-game check rather than guessing from distance or whether the team is home. MLB’s support resource titled “Which teams am I blacked out from?” asks you to enter your viewing ZIP code. Use that result together with the individual game listing and its scheduled broadcaster.

- Enter the ZIP code where you will watch. Use the current MLB blackout lookup and enter the physical viewing location, not a billing address in another state.
- Record the affected team or teams. A single ZIP code can be inside the territories of multiple clubs, especially in overlapping markets.
- Open the listing for the exact game. Check the date, start time, home and away clubs, and the broadcaster shown for that game. National exclusivity can override the normal local/out-of-market result.
- Classify the game. Decide whether it is a local-territory game, an out-of-market game, a nationally exclusive game, or a combination of those conditions.
- Choose the matching official outlet. The options are an in-market club subscription, an existing cable, satellite or telecom package, MLB.TV for an eligible out-of-market game, or the national partner named in the schedule.
Territory assignments, app support and game-by-game rights are live data. Recheck the lookup and schedule immediately before purchasing or watching, particularly during postseason play.
How to watch a local team that MLB.TV blocks
Use the club’s in-market subscription when available
Some clubs sell a direct-to-consumer in-market service intended to remove local video blackouts inside that club’s home territory. Eligibility is still geographic: the service is designed for viewers inside the stated territory, not as a universal replacement for MLB.TV. Prices, device support, included games, authentication requirements and renewal terms differ by club.
MLB’s March 10, 2026 guide reported in-market, blackout-free subscriptions for 22 of the league’s 30 clubs. The guide listed these services:

Check an existing television package
A participating cable, satellite or telecommunications provider may carry the regional channel that owns local rights. This can be useful if you already pay for that package, but channel lineups and regional availability differ. Confirm that the provider carries the channel for your address and that the particular game is not reserved for a national outlet.
When MLB.TV is the right choice
MLB.TV is primarily an out-of-market service. It offers eligible live or on-demand games for teams outside your home television territory, subject to both local and national blackout restrictions. It is not a blanket cure for local games: subscribing does not make a game available when your ZIP code is inside that team’s territory.
Before buying, select the team and game in the service listing and verify that video is available at your location. A team can be out of market for most of its schedule while an individual game is withheld for a national exclusive. MLB’s 2026 guide also said MLB.TV could be purchased without an ESPN Unlimited subscription and that access was available through MLB and ESPN apps during the 2026 season. Those distribution details are season-specific; confirm the current offer, supported devices and renewal terms at checkout.
Nationally exclusive games need the named rights partner
If the game listing identifies a national exclusive, use the platform or channel named there. MLB says select nationally exclusive regular-season and postseason games are provided through national partners rather than MLB.TV or Club.TV. An in-market club subscription does not override that arrangement.

Do not infer the outlet from last season’s schedule. Rights assignments can differ by weekday, postseason round and year. Open the current schedule entry, note the listed broadcaster, and check whether that service requires a separate subscription or a participating television package.
Troubleshoot an incorrect location result
Location detection can fail even when a game is legitimately available. Services may use IP-based signals, and public, corporate, hotel or school Wi-Fi can route traffic through a different city. Work through these checks without assuming that a network change can remove a contractual restriction.
- Confirm that the app account and device are set to the country and region where you are physically watching.
- Compare the detected city or ZIP code with the network’s actual public IP location.
- Switch from managed or public Wi-Fi to a normal home or cellular connection if permitted, then restart the app and sign in again.
- Disable an enterprise proxy or filtering gateway only if your network administrator authorizes it; do not treat this as a way to defeat a valid blackout.
- Update the app and operating system, sign out, clear the app’s cached session and sign back in.
- If the location remains wrong, capture the displayed ZIP code, game, device and network type and contact MLB support. The support team can determine whether the result is a detection error or an actual territory restriction.
On a managed network, ask the administrator to check geolocation databases and proxy routing. MLB’s support guidance notes that network administrators may need to correct location information for public or managed connections.
Audio, replays and delayed viewing
Video and audio have different rights. MLB advertises live audio without blackouts through MLB+; that does not guarantee that the corresponding video is available. If you cannot watch live, open the official game page and check its replay status. Archived video can have its own blackout or delay rules, so do not assume that a live restriction automatically disappears after the final out.

Costs, devices and renewals to verify
Prices are intentionally omitted here because they are volatile and can vary by club, region, promotion and billing term. Before paying, compare the current total cost, whether the plan renews automatically, the number of included games, supported televisions and mobile devices, simultaneous-stream limits, and cancellation deadline.
Also check whether the plan is video-only, includes audio, requires a separate television-provider login, or excludes nationally exclusive games. A lower-priced audio or replay option may fit someone who rarely watches live video, while a local subscription can be more economical than a full television package for a single in-market club.
Common assumptions that lead to the wrong subscription
- “The team is playing away, so it cannot be local.” Home-territory restrictions can apply to road games involving that club.
- “The local channel is not showing it, so MLB.TV must work.” MLB states that a blackout can apply even when the game is not televised in the territory.
- “MLB.TV includes every game.” It is an out-of-market service and remains subject to local and national restrictions.
- “One club subscription covers the league.” In-market products are tied to the participating club and its territory.
- “A streaming device or antenna removes the block.” Devices deliver an authorized feed; they do not change media rights.
- “A network setting guarantees access.” Correcting an erroneous location is legitimate troubleshooting, but it cannot turn a restricted game into an authorized stream.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify where you will physically watch and run the MLB ZIP-code blackout lookup.
- Write down every affected team shown for that location.
- Open the exact game listing and note its broadcaster and any national-exclusive label.
- For a local game, compare the club’s current in-market subscription with a participating pay-TV provider.
- For an eligible out-of-market game, check MLB.TV’s availability before subscribing.
- For a national exclusive, use the named rights partner instead of MLB.TV or the club service.
- If the result conflicts with your actual location, troubleshoot the network and contact support with the game and ZIP-code details.
- For audio or delayed viewing, check the official MLB+ and replay listings separately from live video.
The governing rule is simple: start with location and the specific game, then buy only the service that owns or is authorized to carry that game. Recheck the result in 2026 whenever the schedule, territory or subscription terms change.
