After wearing Meta’s camera-equipped Ray-Ban glasses every day, the author of the account behind this story says they understand why people find them unsettling: to the wearer, they can feel like a convenient camera; to someone nearby, they can look like an undisclosed recording device. The discomfort is not proof that every wearer is recording. It reflects how easily a small camera can be overlooked—and how little a bystander may know about what it is doing.

Why people are uncomfortable around camera glasses

A phone camera usually comes with a familiar cue: someone raises a phone and points it. Smart glasses can capture images without that conspicuous gesture. The Australian eSafety Commissioner notes that this can make it harder for people nearby to tell when they are being recorded, and that small indicator lights may be missed, covered, or disabled. eSafety Commissioner guidance on smart glasses

That is the central mismatch. The wearer may experience the glasses as a hands-free way to take a photo or ask an AI question; another person may see an ordinary pair of glasses and have no clear way to know whether a camera is active. A visible light is not the same as an understood or noticed signal.

The phrase “pervert glasses” is a hostile nickname, not a neutral description of the product or its wearers. WIRED has linked the label to creators filming unsolicited interactions with women and posting the footage. That behavior helps explain the stigma, but it should not be used to imply that all people wearing camera glasses act this way. WIRED’s reporting on the nickname and creator behavior

Are Meta glasses recording all the time?

No: the source account distinguishes intentional photo or video capture from some camera-enabled AI requests. It says the capture light flashes for photos and blinks during video. That does not establish continuous recording, and it does not mean every camera-related feature uses the same signal.

Photos and video

For deliberate capture, the account says the glasses signal activity with an LED. It also says second-generation glasses disable the camera if that light is covered. These are separate questions: whether a safeguard responds to a covered indicator, and whether a bystander can see the indicator in the first place.

Some AI camera requests

The account says some requests on newer models—such as asking the glasses to identify a landmark or plant—may use the camera without lighting the LED. It reports Meta’s explanation that imagery from these requests is not saved in AI conversation history and that facial recognition is not used for them. That is the company’s stated explanation as reported by the source, not an independent test of every model or request.

What the recording light can—and cannot—tell people

An indicator can be functioning and still fail to inform a person nearby. Reporting by TechRadar on an analysis from Hamburg’s Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information says the light was not easily visible in many environments, particularly outdoors and in direct sunlight. This is a reported finding about visibility, not a direct test of every model and lighting condition. TechRadar’s report on the indicator-visibility analysis

Safeguards have also changed over time. The original account describes a second-generation safeguard that disables the camera when the light is covered, alongside a Meta update intended to detect physical modifications. Separately, on 27 August 2026, TechRadar reported that a further software update was rolling out to stop recording if the light is covered after a recording has already started. Meta VP of Wearables Alex Himel said: “The camera won’t start recording if the LED is blocked, but some people try to bypass this by starting a recording and then covering it up. A fix for this is starting to roll out — the camera will now stop working if the light is covered during a recording.” Rollout status is time-sensitive; the statement does not establish that the update has reached every device. TechRadar’s 27 August 2026 update report

These protections address device behavior, not the whole privacy problem. They cannot guarantee that a person notices the light, understands what it means, or agrees to being recorded.

Why the author’s daily use changed their perspective

The source author describes recording strangers without realizing they had been captured. The point is not that every unnoticed recording is intentional or that the glasses are always active; it is that discreet capture can happen without the wearer being fully aware of who is in frame. For the person recorded, intent may not change the experience of discovering their image was captured.

Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton told WIRED that the company’s terms say users are responsible for following applicable laws and using the glasses safely and respectfully. He also said users “shouldn’t use them for engaging in harmful activities like harassment, infringing on privacy rights, or capturing sensitive information.” Company rules set expectations for users, but they do not resolve the bystander’s uncertainty in the moment. How to use camera glasses more considerately

  • Tell people before recording a conversation. Do not assume that a small indicator is visible or meaningful to everyone present.
  • Remove the glasses or close the camera in sensitive settings. The source author recommends this where people reasonably expect privacy.
  • Ask before posting identifiable footage of strangers. Capturing someone and publishing their image are different actions; a recording light does not tell you whether they are comfortable appearing online.

Recording rules differ by jurisdiction and setting, and the source account does not establish what is lawful in any particular place. Legal permission is not the same as considerate use: a person can be uncomfortable even when a wearer believes they are entitled to record.
