Memory shortages can raise smartphone prices and reduce availability because every phone uses memory components that are now under supply and cost pressure. Mobile DRAM provides working memory for apps, while NAND flash stores the operating system, photos and files. When suppliers allocate more advanced capacity to server and AI products, phone makers may face higher contract prices or tighter allocations.
Manufacturers can pass those costs to buyers, accept lower margins, change RAM and storage configurations, prioritize profitable models or cut production plans. That can make some phones more expensive or harder to find, especially at the entry level, but it does not mean every model will rise in price or disappear from stores.
What a “memory shortage” means for a smartphone
A smartphone contains several kinds of semiconductor memory, and the shortage does not affect them identically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMobile DRAM: the phone’s working memory
Mobile DRAM, commonly sold as LPDDR4X or LPDDR5X, temporarily holds the operating system and active app data. More DRAM generally lets a phone keep more apps available without reloading, although software efficiency also matters. DRAM loses its contents when the phone is powered off.

NAND flash: built-in storage
NAND flash retains photos, videos, apps and system files. Phone makers package it as storage capacities such as 128GB, 256GB or 512GB, often using eMMC or UFS interfaces. Storage and DRAM are separate components, so a tight DRAM allocation does not automatically mean every storage product is equally scarce.
HBM is a different market
High-bandwidth memory (HBM) is used mainly with AI accelerators and other high-performance server hardware. AI and server demand can influence how suppliers allocate advanced manufacturing capacity, but it would be inaccurate to say that a smartphone shortage is simply caused by HBM demand. The mechanism is supplier prioritization and constrained capacity across related memory markets.
How higher memory costs reach the phone’s price
Memory is part of a handset’s bill of materials (BOM), so a sharp increase in contract prices changes the economics of each device. TrendForce estimated that memory historically represented about 10–15% of smartphone BOM, but its 1Q26 reference case put the share at roughly 30–40% after the price surge. That is a component-cost estimate, not a claim that retail prices rise by the same percentage. See TrendForce’s 11 February 2026 analysis.

A manufacturer has several ways to respond:
| Manufacturer response | What the buyer may notice | Trade-off for the manufacturer |
|---|---|---|
| Pass part of the cost through | Higher launch or street prices | Demand may weaken, especially for budget phones |
| Absorb the increase | Little immediate price change | Lower gross margin unless other costs are cut |
| Change the configuration | Less RAM or storage at the same price, or fewer high-capacity variants | Product value and differentiation can suffer |
| Change the product mix | More emphasis on profitable mid-range and premium models | Low-margin models may receive less attention |
| Reduce planned production | Fewer units available and shorter retailer supply | Lower sales volume and possible loss of market share |
These responses can occur together. A brand might increase the price of a 256GB model, keep a 128GB version unchanged and reduce the number of entry-level units it makes. Therefore, an industry price forecast should not be read as a guaranteed increase for every listed phone.
What the 2026 forecasts actually measure
The major published estimates use different definitions and comparison periods. They should not be added together as if they were one prediction for a particular handset.
| Source and date | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| TrendForce, 11 February 2026 | Global smartphone production projected to fall 10% year over year to about 1.135 billion units in 2026; a bear case of 15% or more was described. | A forecast of factory output, not an audited year-end result or a prediction for a particular country. |
| TrendForce, 11 February 2026 | Estimated memory share of smartphone BOM: 10–15% historically versus about 30–40% in its 1Q26 reference case. | A component-cost share, not a direct retail-price increase. |
| TrendForce, 11 February 2026 | Nearly 200% year-over-year increase in the estimated contract price for an 8GB + 256GB reference memory configuration in 1Q26. | A contract-price estimate for memory components, not a 200% increase in the price of a phone. |
| Gartner, 26 February 2026 | Worldwide smartphone shipments projected to decline 8.4% in 2026 versus 2025; worldwide smartphone prices projected to rise 13%. | A global forecast versus 2025, not a promise that every model or region will move by 13%. |
| Gartner, 26 February 2026 | Gartner’s release estimated combined DRAM and SSD prices could be up 130% by the end of 2026. | A component estimate covering DRAM and SSDs, not a smartphone retail-price forecast. |
| TrendForce, 14 May 2026 | LPDDR4X contract average selling prices estimated to rise at least 70–75% quarter over quarter in 2Q26; LPDDR5X at 78–83%. | Quarterly mobile-DRAM contract estimates; they do not map one-for-one to a phone’s shelf price. |
| TrendForce, 14 May 2026 | Average smartphone DRAM capacity projected at 8.5GB in 2026, up 10% year over year. | A market average can rise even while some models lose high-capacity options. |
| TrendForce, 30 September 2026 | Conventional DRAM contract prices projected to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26; NAND flash prices projected to rise 15–20%. | Market-wide memory-category forecasts, not direct phone-price forecasts. |
Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal summarized the device-market effect this way: “Higher prices will narrow the range of devices available, prompting buyers to hold on to devices for longer, fundamentally altering upgrade cycles.” The statement accompanies Gartner’s general PC and smartphone shipment forecast. Gartner’s separate statement that the sub-$500 entry-level PC segment could disappear by 2028 concerns PCs, not smartphones.

Which smartphones face the most pressure?
Entry-level phones
Budget models are most exposed because they operate with thinner margins and buyers are more sensitive to even a modest price increase. Gartner said the memory-driven surge would disproportionately affect basic smartphones. TrendForce likewise identified brands dependent on entry-level volume as more vulnerable to cost volatility. A manufacturer that cannot raise the price without losing demand may instead reduce specifications or make fewer units.
Mid-range phones
Mid-range devices have more room for configuration changes. A maker may retain an 8GB RAM model as the core version while limiting 12GB or 256GB/512GB variants. Whether that is a bad value depends on the phone’s software support, processor, camera hardware and actual price—not on RAM capacity alone.
Premium phones
Premium models generally have more margin headroom, so the cited analyses expect them to be less affected than basic phones. They are not immune: expensive memory configurations can still raise costs, and a manufacturer may protect margins by increasing the price of a high-storage tier or delaying a lower-priced variant.

How configurations may change
TrendForce’s May analysis described 12GB as the mainstream high-end configuration, 8GB as the mid-range core and about 4GB for most entry-level models, while expecting 16GB adoption to decline. These are market-level observations, not specifications for every brand. The projected 8.5GB average DRAM capacity in 2026 can rise at the same time that some high-memory options disappear, because the mix of phones is changing.

Availability tightens when a manufacturer cannot secure enough memory at an acceptable cost or cannot make a low-margin model profitable. It may prioritize a flagship, a carrier-specific version or a region with stronger demand, while reducing production of cheaper variants. If total planned output falls, retailers receive fewer units and restocks may be less predictable.

Those statements establish industry risk, not the stock status of a particular model in a particular country.

As of TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 report, suppliers were still prioritizing advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products. The report described the overall DRAM market as undersupplied and expected conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 and NAND flash prices to rise 15–20%. It also said mobile-DRAM prices were still trending upward, although the rate of increase should moderate after substantial rises in earlier quarters.
For eMMC and UFS storage, smartphone brands were relying largely on existing inventory for fourth-quarter production and making limited incremental purchases. That creates a mixed near-term picture: some manufacturers may have enough stock for planned builds, while others may limit new orders or adjust configurations. It is not evidence that every phone or storage part is equally scarce.
How to shop when prices or stock are changing
- Check the complete listing price and availability in your country. Compare the price you can actually pay, including taxes, delivery and carrier conditions. A global forecast cannot tell you whether a model is in stock at a local retailer.
- Record the exact RAM and storage configuration. “The same model” may be sold with 4GB, 6GB, 8GB or 12GB of RAM and with different storage capacities. Compare like-for-like configurations rather than comparing model names.
- Evaluate support life. Check the manufacturer’s published operating-system and security-update commitment. A phone that costs slightly more but receives support for longer may be better value than a discounted model that reaches end of support sooner.
- Check warranty and returns. Confirm who provides the warranty, how long it lasts, who pays return shipping and whether the device is new, open-box or refurbished.
- Verify network compatibility. For an unlocked phone, check the supported LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE requirements and eSIM or physical-SIM compatibility with your carrier and country.
- Buy the capacity you will use. More RAM does not automatically make a phone faster, and more storage is useful only if you need it. Consider camera-video file sizes, games, offline media and how long you plan to keep the phone.
If you are considering a refurbished phone
Refurbished devices can provide an alternative when new entry-level prices rise, but compare condition rather than headline price. Confirm the cosmetic grade, battery-health policy or minimum battery capacity, parts-replacement disclosure, warranty, return window and seller reputation. Also check that the exact regional model supports your network. A low price without battery and return information is not a like-for-like alternative to a new phone.
What will not fix a built-in memory shortage
A microSD card or external drive can expand personal-file storage only when the phone supports it and the software permits the intended use. It does not add built-in mobile DRAM, and it does not change the supply of internal NAND used for the operating system and apps. A “memory cleaner” cannot create physical RAM or storage either. Before buying an accessory, check the phone’s specifications and understand whether the limitation is working memory, internal storage or removable-storage compatibility.
Quick Recap
How to interpret the situation without overreacting
- Higher component prices can be passed through, absorbed, or managed through specifications and production volume; no single response applies to every manufacturer.
- A 13% global smartphone-price forecast from Gartner and a 10–20% quarterly memory-contract forecast from TrendForce measure different things and periods.
- Entry-level models have less room to absorb cost increases, while premium models generally have more margin protection.
- A lower production forecast raises availability risk but does not prove that a specific phone is out of stock locally.
- Market-average RAM can increase even when some high-memory configurations are reduced or discontinued.
