Marvel Rivals is now listed as PEGI 16 rather than PEGI 12 on the UK Xbox storefront. The game still carries descriptors for moderate violence and user interaction, but the current listing explicitly adds “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items).” That wording makes paid random-reward or gacha-style cosmetic systems the leading explanation for the change—not a sudden increase in combat violence.
What changed on the Marvel Rivals listing?
The documented change is on the UK Xbox storefront: an earlier listing showed PEGI 12, while the current listing shows PEGI 16. Both versions identified moderate violence, user interaction and in-game purchases that include random items. The important difference is the age category attached to the same broad content descriptors.
Xbox describes Marvel Rivals as a “Free+” game developed and published by NetEase Games, released on 6 December 2024. The store page also displays Lattice currency add-ons in packages of 100, 1,000, 2,180, 5,680 and 11,680 Lattice. Those packages demonstrate the game’s paid-currency system, but they do not establish that every random-item event uses the same prices.

Why paid random items are the leading explanation
The current Xbox wording specifically says “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items).” That is the clearest new signal in the before-and-after listing. In PEGI terminology, a game that sells an item without revealing exactly which reward the buyer will receive can fall under a stricter age treatment than ordinary, clearly priced in-game purchases.

The Psylocke cosmetic bundle
Reporting published on 16 October 2026 described a Psylocke cosmetic gacha bundle introduced in December 2025. Players used Units to pop balloons for cosmetic rewards. The first attempt cost 100 Units, the second cost 200, and later attempts became progressively more expensive until the bundle was completed. The same report said subsequent seasons added more gacha-style bundles.
This is why the paid-random-item descriptor is widely viewed as the most plausible trigger for the new rating. The evidence connects the rating change to monetisation mechanics rather than to a redesign of the game’s fighting or a newly introduced content category.
How the PEGI policy timing fits
The change also follows a PEGI announcement reported in March 2026: games containing paid random items would receive PEGI 16 by default from July 2026. That policy timing supports the explanation, but it is not a case-specific ruling quoted from PEGI that names Marvel Rivals. The safest description is therefore “the leading explanation,” not a confirmed public statement that PEGI changed this particular listing for one named bundle.

PEGI 12 versus PEGI 16 in this case
| Aspect | Earlier UK Xbox listing | Current UK Xbox listing |
|---|---|---|
| Age category | PEGI 12 | PEGI 16 |
| Violence | Moderate violence | Moderate violence |
| Interaction | User interaction | User interaction |
| Purchases | In-game purchases, including random items | In-game purchases, including random items |
| What the evidence represents | Storefront age label | Storefront age label |
The table shows why it is misleading to say that Marvel Rivals was upgraded because its battles became more graphic: the violence descriptor is unchanged in the documented listings. The visible classification change is the move from 12 to 16 alongside the random-item wording.
Does this mean Marvel Rivals is now unsuitable for anyone under 16?
PEGI 16 is an age classification displayed by a storefront; it is not evidence here of a new legal ban or a universal change to every platform. The documented before-and-after evidence concerns the UK Xbox listing. The available information does not establish that all consoles, PC storefronts or European countries changed at the same time.
Parents and players should therefore check the rating shown on the specific platform and country storefront they use. A UK Xbox label should not automatically be presented as proof of an identical rating everywhere else. PEGI ratings are guidance used by participating European markets, while platform listings can update at different times.

What “includes random items” means for players
The descriptor indicates that at least some purchases can produce an uncertain reward rather than a single, fully specified item. In Marvel Rivals, the reported balloon-opening bundles used an escalating-attempt structure for cosmetic rewards. A player may know the possible cosmetics but not which one an individual paid attempt will deliver.

- Random outcome: the purchase does not guarantee one specifically selected cosmetic on that attempt.
- Paid access: the attempts use an in-game currency that can be obtained through the game’s monetisation system.
- Escalating cost in the reported event: attempts began at 100 Units, then 200 Units, with later attempts increasing until completion.
- Cosmetic focus in the reported example: the described rewards were skins or other appearance items, not evidence of stronger combat abilities.
Did the violence or sexual content cause the change?
The available listing evidence does not support either claim. Moderate violence appears on both the PEGI 12 and PEGI 16 Xbox entries, so there is no documented increase in that descriptor. The reporting on the change also notes no new sexual-content descriptor. The most defensible conclusion is that the stricter age category reflects how paid random rewards are classified, not a newly violent or sexual version of Marvel Rivals.

No public statement cited here quotes PEGI explaining Marvel Rivals’ individual reassessment. The policy connection and the timing are strong clues, while the exact internal classification decision is not publicly detailed. It is also not established that every Marvel Rivals random-item event has identical pricing, probabilities or reward rules; the Psylocke bundle is a documented example, not a specification for all future events.

For accurate reporting, identify the storefront and territory—“UK Xbox listing,” for example—and date the observation. That qualification matters because platform and regional rollout details are incomplete.
Bottom line for players and parents
Marvel Rivals moved from PEGI 12 to PEGI 16 on the UK Xbox storefront in October 2026. The game’s listed moderate violence did not change. The added emphasis on “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items),” together with the reported gacha-style cosmetic bundles and the 2026 PEGI policy timing, makes paid random rewards the leading reason for the higher label. It does not, on the evidence available, indicate a sudden rise in violence, sexual content or a worldwide legal restriction.
