A marketplace can return HTTP 200 while showing logged-out visitors—and Google—no usable listing content. That mismatch can make a live listing appear missing, but the status code alone does not prove that Google will index it. The right fix depends on whether the listing is still public, has moved, or is genuinely gone.
Why does a page return 200 but show nothing?
HTTP 200 means the request succeeded; it does not guarantee that the response contains useful listing content. If a page looks empty or says that content does not exist while returning 200, Google may treat it as a soft 404. Google defines a soft 404 as a URL that returns a page telling users it does not exist alongside a 200 status. Google also notes that a page with no main content or an empty page can be treated this way. Google Search Central’s crawling-error guidance explains the distinction.
A 200 is appropriate for a working page with substantive content. A 404 or 410 is appropriate when a listing is permanently gone and has no close replacement. The problem is not that 200 is always worse than 404; it is a misleading 200 paired with empty, error-like, or inaccessible content.
Why are marketplace listings hidden when you’re logged out?
One possible cause is an authentication gate: the marketplace may show the listing only after a visitor signs in. Google says that if a page is made private by requiring a login, Googlebot will not crawl it. If public discovery is intended, the marketplace needs to make the listing’s public content available without login, rather than relying on a private page. See Google’s technical requirements for Search.

A login gate is not the only explanation for an empty page. A listing that should be public may fail to render because of JavaScript problems, blocked or missing resources, server errors, or resources that are slow or too large. Google’s crawling-error troubleshooting guidance describes these as possible causes of blank or nearly blank rendered pages. Without examining the specific URL, it is not possible to determine which cause applies.
Can Google index a page that requires login?
Googlebot does not crawl a page made private by a login requirement. For a page intended to appear in Search, Google’s stated minimum technical requirements include allowing crawler access, returning HTTP 200, and providing indexable content. Meeting these requirements still does not guarantee that Google will index the page. A successful status code on its own is not enough.

What response should a marketplace return?
Choose the response according to the listing’s actual state, not merely how the page looks in one browser session.

| Listing state | Expected visitor experience | Response and action |
|---|---|---|
| Still live and intended to be public | Substantive listing content is available while logged out and can be rendered by Google. | Return 200, make the public content accessible without login, and verify the rendered page. |
| Permanently removed with no close replacement | An explanatory removal page may help visitors, but the resource is gone. | Return 404 or 410. The response should communicate that the listing no longer exists. |
| Moved to a clear replacement | Visitors should reach the equivalent current listing. | Use a permanent 301 redirect to the replacement. |
| Still live but blank or nearly blank to Google | The intended listing is not present in Google’s rendered output. | Inspect rendering and resource availability; correct the failure before reassessing the page. |
| Available only after authentication | Logged-out visitors and Googlebot cannot access the private listing. | If public discovery is intended, provide a public listing view instead of relying on the login-only page. |
Google recommends 404 or 410 for removed content without a replacement and a permanent 301 when there is a clear replacement. A custom page explaining that a listing is gone can still be useful, as long as its HTTP response accurately signals removal.

How to diagnose a listing that looks empty
- Check the URL while logged out. Record the HTTP status, response headers, visible page, and whether the listing text appears in the rendered content.
- Compare logged-out and logged-in views. If the content appears only after signing in, that points to an authentication difference. This is an implementation check, not a separate Google rule.
- Inspect the URL in Search Console. Use URL Inspection to examine a specific page and its rendered output. If Google cannot access URLs, Google recommends checking both the Page Indexing and Crawl Stats reports.
- Fix the cause that matches the listing’s state. For a live public listing, correct access or rendering behavior. For a listing that is gone, return 404 or 410; for one with a clear replacement, use a permanent 301.
After changing access or rendering behavior, inspect the URL again and reassess what the rendered page contains. Google’s documentation describes technical prerequisites, not a guarantee of indexing.
