Yes, lunar lava tubes could offer astronauts shelter from radiation and micrometeorites because rock overhead can block direct exposure to space. But the idea remains a promising concept, not a proven habitat: a surface pit may reveal a subsurface void without confirming that a safe, accessible lava tube lies beyond it.
How a lunar lava tube and pit form
Lava tubes form when the surface of a flowing lava stream cools into a crust while molten lava continues moving beneath it. If the lava later drains, it can leave a hollow conduit. A section of the tube roof may collapse, creating a pit that opens onto the lunar surface.
That opening is evidence of a possible subsurface void, not proof that the pit leads to a continuous, traversable cave. A candidate site would need to be mapped and assessed before astronauts or habitat equipment could safely enter it.

In principle, a habitat set back beneath a rock overhang could gain protection that an exposed surface base does not have. The amount of shielding would depend on the depth and thickness of rock, the shape of the overhang, the habitat’s position, and how much sky remains visible from the location.

Radiation: plausible shielding, but no established dose reduction
Rock overhead could intercept or weaken radiation arriving along some directions. The geometry matters, however: openings and exposed lines of sight may leave parts of a habitat less protected. NASA’s technical presentation calls for modern radiation-transport analysis, and the reviewed evidence does not establish crew radiation doses inside an accessible lunar tube. There is no universal dose-reduction figure to apply to every pit or cave.
Micrometeorites: overhead rock could block direct impacts
A roof or overhang could intercept direct micrometeoroid strikes before they reach a habitat placed beneath it. That benefit would depend on where the habitat sits relative to the opening and the surrounding rock. The available sources do not quantify a universal protection rate, so a cave should not be treated as completely impact-proof.

Temperature: a promising pit observation, not a cave measurement
NASA reporting in 2022 described LRO Diviner data and computer modeling that found permanently shaded reaches of the Mare Tranquillitatis pit at about 17 C, with little fluctuation through the lunar day. The temperature is for shaded parts of the pit; the possibility of similar conditions in a cave depends on a cave extending from the opening. It is not a direct measurement inside a lava tube.

The pit result points to a more stable thermal environment, but it does not establish that a site is habitable or that a habitat there would need no thermal control.

What has actually been found
The counts describe pits and possible features, not confirmed, usable underground homes. In a 2014 report, NASA counted more than 200 lunar pits, with reported diameters ranging from about 5 meters to more than 900 meters. In a 2022 NASA article, planetary scientist Tyler Horvath estimated that about 16 of more than 200 pits were probably collapsed lava tubes. That estimate is not a count of confirmed accessible caves.
Robert Wagner, an Arizona State University researcher and lead author of the pit research, described one possible shelter scenario: “A habitat placed in a pit — ideally several dozen meters back under an overhang — would provide a very safe location for astronauts: no radiation, no micrometeorites, possibly very little dust, and no wild day-night temperature swings.” This is a proposed benefit, not a verified finding that a real habitat would receive no radiation or micrometeoroid exposure.

What makes a tube difficult to use as a habitat
Natural shielding could reduce the amount of shelter that must be built, but using an underground site creates its own engineering and operational problems. NASA’s 2023 technical presentation identifies potential reductions in construction or landed-mass requirements as a reason to consider existing pits or tubes, while also highlighting challenges that require planning.
- Finding a suitable site: Teams would need to establish whether a pit connects to a usable void and determine whether the route and surrounding structure are suitable.
- Reaching and entering it: Transporting crew, equipment, and habitat modules below the surface adds access and deployment risks compared with operating at an exposed site.
- Landing safely: Nearby terrain and the pit itself have to be considered when choosing a landing area and moving equipment to the entrance.
- Providing power: A subsurface location may complicate access to sunlight, so power generation and delivery require site-specific planning.
- Rejecting waste heat: A habitat still produces heat that must be managed; underground conditions can make heat rejection more complex.
- Modeling radiation: The shielding benefit needs to be evaluated for the actual rock geometry and habitat position, rather than assumed from the presence of a roof.
How strong is the case today?
The physical case is straightforward: a sufficiently deep, well-positioned rock overhang could reduce direct exposure to radiation and micrometeoroid impacts, and shaded pit conditions may offer a more stable thermal environment than the lunar surface. But current evidence does not demonstrate crew radiation doses inside an accessible lava tube, establish that a particular candidate is structurally suitable and safely accessible, or show a human-rated habitat operating underground.

NASA LRO Project Scientist Noah Petro said of the thermal work: “Knowing that they create a stable thermal environment helps us paint a picture of these unique lunar features and the prospect of one day exploring them.” The distinction is important: the observations and modeling make pits and possible connected caves worth investigating, but they do not yet show that astronauts can safely live in one.
