Low-cost air-quality sensors are useful indicators, not automatic substitutes for regulatory monitoring. A reading can diverge from the true concentration because of the pollutant being measured, the sensor’s selectivity, temperature, humidity, airflow, placement, data processing, calibration and age. The same model may perform differently in a kitchen, bedroom, workshop or outdoor setting.

That does not make every inexpensive monitor inaccurate. It means its result has to be interpreted in context and, when a decision matters, checked against a suitable reference. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) distinguishes accuracy—closeness to what is actually in the air—from precision—how consistently readings repeat. A device can be precise but consistently biased high or low.

Accuracy and precision are not the same

EPA describes accuracy as the “measure of closeness to what is actually in air.” Precision describes repeatability: whether repeated measurements under the same conditions agree with one another. These properties answer different questions.

A precise sensor can still be wrong

Suppose a monitor reports 18, 19 and 18 micrograms per cubic metre while a reference instrument indicates 10. The readings are tightly grouped, so the sensor is precise, but they have a positive bias and are not accurate. Conversely, a sensor might average close to the reference while producing more scatter from one reading to the next.

There is no universal error percentage

EPA’s consumer guidance does not publish one accuracy percentage that applies to all current consumer monitors. Performance depends on the pollutant, model, environment and data treatment. A claim such as “this type of sensor is 95% accurate” is incomplete unless it identifies the pollutant, test conditions, reference instrument, averaging interval and statistical metric.

For definitions and consumer guidance, see the EPA’s Low-Cost Air Pollution Monitors and Indoor Air Quality resource and its Frequent Questions About Air Sensors.

Environmental conditions can change the result

A sensor does not measure in a vacuum. EPA identifies placement, time in use, processing methods, temperature, relative humidity and multiple contaminants as influences on performance. Extreme temperatures and high humidity are especially important because they can alter a sensor’s response or create conditions that its design and calibration do not cover.

Humidity and temperature

Water vapour can affect particle measurements and some gas-sensing technologies. Temperature can change the underlying sensor response, electronics and the chemistry of the sampled air. The size and direction of the resulting error are device-specific; there is no safe, universal humidity correction that can be applied to every monitor.

EPA’s 2021 PM2.5 sensor-testing protocol uses 40% relative humidity as a moderate condition and 85% as an elevated condition. The protocol also notes that temperatures below 20°C and humidity above 85% can be difficult to reproduce in test chambers and may produce condensation. Those figures describe controlled test conditions, not a promise that a consumer device will be accurate at either level.

Pollutant mixtures and cross-sensitivity

Many low-cost instruments are designed to infer a pollutant from a response that can also be affected by other substances. If a monitor is intended to estimate one gas but encounters a mixture of gases, vapours or particles, non-target pollutants may raise or lower the displayed value. A sensor may therefore react to the wrong thing, or fail to respond strongly enough to the pollutant you care about.

Check both selectivity (whether the sensor distinguishes the target from interferents) and sensitivity (whether it responds adequately across the relevant concentration range). A label naming a pollutant does not, by itself, establish that the device can separate it reliably in your particular environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Placement and airflow

A monitor beside a stove, printer, open window, supply vent, cleaning product or running vehicle samples a local plume, not necessarily the room-wide concentration. A shelf, enclosure, curtain or wall can restrict airflow; direct sunlight or a nearby heater can create a local temperature different from the rest of the room. Outdoor readings can likewise be distorted by a wall, tree, roadway edge or other obstruction.

Placement should match the question you are asking. To understand general room conditions, use an unobstructed location with representative airflow and keep it away from immediate sources. To investigate a source, deliberately place the monitor near that source, but label the data as a source-proximity measurement rather than a room average.

Indoor and outdoor results are not interchangeable

Outdoor field performance does not automatically establish indoor performance. Indoor spaces have changing ventilation, cooking emissions, cleaning chemicals, furnishings and occupancy patterns that may be absent from an outdoor test. Evaluate evidence for the pollutant and environment in which you will use the device.

Data handling can create apparent disagreement

Two devices can sample the same air yet display different numbers because they process the data differently. One may show an instantaneous value while another reports a one-minute, five-minute or longer average. Smoothing, baseline subtraction, humidity compensation, outlier handling and missing-data rules can all change the displayed series.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare like with like

When checking a sensor against another instrument, align their clocks, sampling intervals and averaging periods. Compare synchronized time windows rather than one device’s instantaneous value with another’s hourly average. Record whether either system applies an internal correction or reports a rolling average.

Do not silently delete surprising points

A sudden spike may be a real short-lived event, a local plume, condensation, an obstruction or an electronic fault. EPA notes that questionable data points and systematic bias are possible. Preserve the original record, annotate what happened in the room or outdoors, and investigate before filtering data. Removing every inconvenient value can hide the very conditions that explain the disagreement.

Product differences and aging matter

Results vary between models—and sometimes units

Performance is product-specific. EPA cautions that results can vary by manufacturer and even among products from one manufacturer. Differences in sensing elements, firmware, airflow design, factory adjustment and quality control can produce different behavior under the same conditions.

Indoor criteria are not broadly standardized

EPA states that “There are currently no widely accepted indoor performance criteria used for most low-cost air pollutant monitors.” A product can therefore have an attractive specification sheet without having passed a broadly accepted indoor test for your pollutant and use case.

Sensors have a finite service life

Monitors can become less reliable as sensing elements age or become contaminated. The expected lifespan varies by technology and operating conditions; use the manufacturer’s stated service life as a planning figure, not a guarantee. Follow the specified cleaning, filter replacement, storage and operating procedures. A monitor that was trustworthy when new should not be assumed to remain so indefinitely.

How to check whether a reading is useful

Use the following process before relying on a number for a health, building or compliance decision.

  1. Identify the measured pollutant. Confirm whether the instrument measures PM2.5, another particle size, a specific gas or only a proxy such as an index. Check the stated concentration range and units.
  2. Confirm the intended setting. Determine whether the model is designed for indoor use, outdoor use or both. Do not assume that an outdoor-only instrument is suitable for a home or office.
  3. Find independent evaluation details. Look for testing that names the pollutant, environmental range, reference instrument, averaging period, siting and statistical metrics. A product page that supplies only a resolution or display range is not a performance evaluation.
  4. Use a suitable reference. For a formal comparison, EPA protocols use Federal Reference Method (FRM) or Federal Equivalent Method (FEM) monitors as references in their testing context. A consumer device can be compared with a less formal reference for troubleshooting, but the limitation should be recorded.
  5. Co-locate under comparable conditions. EPA field-testing guidance places sensors within 20 metres horizontally of the reference, with unrestricted airflow and inlet heights within 1 metre of one another. These are protocol recommendations for an evaluation, not a universal installation rule. Avoid placing one instrument in a plume, enclosure or different temperature and humidity zone.
  6. Synchronize and document the data. Set clocks, use the same time basis and record averaging intervals, environmental conditions, firmware or processing settings and any maintenance.
  7. Interpret the result for that context only. A comparison can reveal bias or disagreement under the tested conditions. It does not prove performance in every room, season, concentration or pollutant mixture.
  8. Consider field calibration carefully. Co-location-based calibration may improve results for a particular device and site. It is not proof of universal accuracy, and a correction derived in dry outdoor air may not transfer to a humid kitchen or another pollutant mix.
  9. Check age and upkeep. Verify the service-life guidance, clean or replace parts as directed and treat a device past its expected life as a trend indicator until it is re-evaluated.

EPA’s Evaluation of Emerging Air Sensor Performance resources explain co-located evaluation, while the EPA protocol FAQ describes reference monitors, siting and environmental test conditions.

What comparison and calibration can—and cannot—prove

What a co-location test can establish

  • Whether the sensor tracks a reference during the tested period.
  • Whether it shows a consistent high or low bias under those conditions.
  • Whether humidity, temperature or concentration appears to affect the relationship.
  • Whether its precision and response time are adequate for the intended use.

What it cannot establish by itself

  • Accuracy for a different pollutant or pollutant mixture.
  • Performance in a different indoor or outdoor environment.
  • Behavior at humidity, temperature or concentration ranges that were not tested.
  • Reliability after the sensor ages, is moved or is maintained differently.
  • Regulatory compliance or a medical conclusion.

Calibration is a model-and-context adjustment, not a magic conversion from an inexpensive monitor into a reference instrument. If the underlying response changes with humidity, interferents or age, one correction factor cannot remove every source of error.

Troubleshooting an implausible reading

Observed symptom Likely explanations Checks and response
Values jump during cooking or cleaning A real local plume, cross-sensitivity to vapours, or changed airflow Note the activity, move the monitor to a representative location for a room-average question, and compare the time pattern with ventilation.
Readings stay high in a damp room Humidity influence, condensation or a genuine particle increase Check relative humidity and temperature, inspect for condensation, follow the manufacturer’s operating range and avoid applying an unvalidated correction.
Two monitors disagree consistently Different pollutants, calibration, averaging, placement or systematic bias Confirm units and time intervals, synchronize clocks, co-locate with unrestricted airflow and compare against a suitable reference.
Outdoor data look good but indoor data do not Different source mixture, ventilation and environmental range Seek indoor evidence for the target pollutant; do not transfer outdoor performance claims automatically.
A sensor becomes erratic after months or years Aging, contamination, blocked inlet or overdue maintenance Check service-life guidance, clean or replace parts as specified and re-evaluate before trusting the trend.
One isolated spike appears without an obvious event Short local emission, airflow change, condensation or a questionable data point Preserve and annotate the value, inspect conditions and look for corroboration rather than deleting it silently.

EPA does not endorse a particular indoor monitor. Treat any model as an instrument for a defined purpose: observing trends, locating a source, checking ventilation or supporting a controlled evaluation. If you need a regulatory determination, use the monitoring approach required by the relevant authority rather than relying on a consumer sensor.

Using a low-cost sensor responsibly

For everyday use, establish a baseline in a stable location, keep a log of cooking, cleaning, ventilation and occupancy, and look for repeated patterns rather than reacting to one number. Use trends to decide when to investigate ventilation or a source. When a reading would trigger a major health, building or compliance decision, verify it with an appropriate reference and qualified advice.

The most defensible interpretation is conditional: this device measured this pollutant, at this location, during this time interval, under these environmental conditions, using this data processing. Stating those limits makes the information more useful, not less.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Low-cost sensors can reveal changes that would otherwise be invisible, but their readings are indicators whose reliability depends on the complete measurement system. Accuracy, precision, environment, placement, processing, calibration and sensor age all belong in the interpretation.
