When Jon Gilbert set up a new Pixel from a cloud backup of his previous phone, his Desert Golfing save appeared to fall from roughly hole 6,000 to hole 83. The August 30, 2026 essay in Android Police, syndicated by Yahoo Tech, describes one person’s loss—not a confirmed technical diagnosis. Gilbert says the game had been a small companion through a decade of life, and that he was sad to lose the progress but did not feel the time was wasted.

Why losing app progress can feel like losing more than a number

Progress in a game or app can become a record of time and routine. Gilbert’s account is a personal example: he describes completing a hole each day and returning to the game across changing circumstances. The number on screen represented more than a score because it had accumulated alongside those days.

His save had reached roughly hole 6,000, he reported; after moving to a new Pixel, the game showed hole 83. He also referred to 10,001 as the game’s “fabled” target. Those figures come from Gilbert’s essay, not an independent audit of the game or its endpoint. His conclusion was that losing the progress made him sad, but did not make the time he spent playing feel wasted.

Why a phone backup may not restore a game save

A device backup and a game’s save system are related but not interchangeable. Android backup can include app data, but Google warns that support varies: “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.” Restore behavior can also differ by Android version and device.

Some games save progress through Google Play Games; others may rely on a developer’s own account or a local save. Google Play Games only restores progress for games that use its supported save system, and Google notes: “Not all games automatically save your progress.” Cloud saving is implemented by the game developer. Google’s developer documentation describes Saved Games as one option and explains that developers must handle conflicts between local and cloud copies.

Gilbert’s account does not establish which mechanism Desert Golfing used, why the save did not appear on the new phone, or whether that particular progress can be recovered. A missing save after migration does not, by itself, prove that Google backup failed for a known technical reason.

What to check when a game is missing your progress

  1. Confirm the account. On the new device, check that the same Google account used for the game is active. If the game has its own account or sign-in, check that as well.
  2. Check whether the game supports Google Play Games saves. Google’s restore game data guidance recommends checking the game’s Play Games support and the account in use. A game that does not use the supported save system may not restore progress through it.
  3. Contact the game developer if the save is still missing. Google says it does not manage in-app data or game accounts; its guidance directs players to the developer for game-specific progress problems.
  4. Do not clear storage or reinstall before checking for a local save. Those actions can remove data on the device, and Google’s troubleshooting steps do not guarantee that a local save can be recovered. First establish whether the old device still has the progress and ask the developer what recovery options, if any, exist.

Google’s overview of backup limits is available in Back up or restore data on your Android device. For developers, the Google Play Games Saved Games documentation explains cloud-save implementation and conflict resolution; it does not confirm how any particular game handles saves.

Can the lost progress be recovered?

Possibly, but it depends on the game’s save design and whether another copy still exists. The available information does not establish a recovery route for Gilbert’s Desert Golfing save, so it would be misleading to promise that the old progress can be restored. The game’s developer is the appropriate source for a game-specific answer.
