A persistent “already announced” sentinel records that a failure was reported before; it does not tell a monitoring script whether the failure is happening now. If a consumer needs the current sensor status, a one-time notice can turn a live condition into a historical event—and leave the consumer with silence while the problem continues.
What a “log once” sentinel actually means
In a Bash script, a sentinel file can suppress duplicate messages: check whether the file exists, print a warning if it does not, then create the file. On later runs, the file means only that the warning was previously announced. Unless some other part of the program removes it when appropriate, it does not prove that the underlying condition has cleared or say what the sensor reports now.
That is the semantic difference between a historical event and a current status. As Ilya Mozerov puts it in his 2026 incident report, “It changes the tense of the sentence.” A one-time message may be appropriate for an event notification; it is not automatically a suitable representation of a live reading.

Why the consumer can see nothing
Mozerov describes a Bash helper that prints “phone unreachable” to standard error only when an offline sentinel is absent, then creates the sentinel. Its caller captures standard output with ctx="$(mesh-body-context)". Because command substitution captures stdout, not stderr, that caller does not receive the first diagnostic. On later runs, the sentinel suppresses the diagnostic altogether.

In the reported case, a repeated failing run produced zero bytes on both streams. The consumer therefore had no current reading and no usable unavailable status. The key issue is the contract between producer and consumer: a message sent only to stderr cannot inform code that reads only stdout. Neither stream is universally correct; the status must reach the channel the consumer actually reads.
Mozerov reports that the tool returned no output on every invocation over 36 days on his own machine. He could not establish how many times a person or agent ran it and received silence, because the failure left no reader-side record. The duration is an account of that incident, not a measure of how often this happens generally.
Represent unavailable data as unavailable
An empty captured value is ambiguous. It could mean the sensor is unavailable, but it could also result from a crash, timeout, missing command, skipped invocation, or another failure. A consumer should not have to interpret silence as “calm,” “still,” or “healthy.”

Mozerov’s revised tool emits an explicit unavailable message to stdout on every run, identifying the phone as unreachable and the body context as unread. That distinction matters: an unread measurement is not a reassuring measurement. In the article’s words, “Silence is not one of them,” referring to a primary-source reading, a named fallback reading, or a named refusal.
Choose output based on the interface:
- If downstream code captures stdout, put the status it needs on stdout.
- If a separate logging consumer reads stderr, diagnostics may belong there—but do not assume the stdout consumer will see them.
- Make the unavailable state explicit, and distinguish it from a valid reading that happens to indicate no activity.
Test the second run, not just the first
A first invocation cannot distinguish “announce once” from “announce every time”: both can print the same message before a sentinel exists. The bug becomes visible only after the sentinel has been created. Mozerov summarizes the trap: “A test that exercises this path once passes on the broken code, because on the first run the once-only sentence and the every-run sentence are the same sentence.”

- Run the script with the failure condition present and capture the consumer-facing stream.
- Check that the first run reports an explicit unavailable status.
- Run it again without clearing the sentinel.
- Check that the second run still communicates the current unavailable status if the failure persists.
The second-run assertion is not a demand to repeat every log message. It verifies that suppressing an announcement has not erased the current-state signal.
Exercise behavior before checking for real hardware
In Mozerov’s report, the smoke test exited through an unavailable-hardware gate before reaching its behavioral checks. That meant the test could not exercise the failure path on a machine without the device. His fix drives the script using a stubbed sensor command, then checks the unavailable path before relying on a real device.
For monitoring scripts, keep the behavior test independent of the hardware gate where practical. Stub the command at the script’s normal invocation boundary so it returns the unavailable status, then verify the message and repeat-run behavior. A test that exits before invoking the relevant path does not validate that path.

Check what happens to the sentinel on every failure path
A sentinel guard is not inherently wrong; its effect depends on control flow. Mozerov found that related scripts in his codebase removed the sentinel during recovery before a later SSH-read failure gate. On that particular path, the guard was therefore ineffective. The affected tool’s failure path did not remove it, so subsequent runs stayed silent.
When inspecting a script, trace each route from detection of the failure to the output and any cleanup. In particular, check whether the sentinel is created, removed during recovery, or left in place before the consumer reads the result. A guard that behaves correctly for one failure gate may behave differently for another.
Use rate limiting when the condition is live but messages are noisy
If the condition should remain visible but repeated warnings are too frequent, use a time-based rate limit rather than a permanent “already announced” state. The distinction appears in a separate Apache HBase issue about BucketAllocator warnings: its discussion contrasts printing once with printing at a more reasonable interval, such as once per minute. That issue is an example of the terminology, not evidence about Mozerov’s Bash incident.

Choose the behavior that matches the meaning consumers need:
- One-time event: report that something happened, then suppress duplicate event announcements as intended.
- Current status: communicate whether the condition holds on this run, including when it is unavailable.
- Rate-limited status or warning: preserve recurring visibility while limiting how often messages are emitted.
The incident figures Mozerov reports are limited to his own codebase: he found the exact guard 40 times across 23 scripts, and in a live sweep of 11 tools, 3 returned readings despite the phone being away. These are his reported observations, not independently audited measurements or population statistics.
