Android Auto does not browse every audio file on your phone. It displays media apps that support Android Auto, while each app decides which local folders it indexes and exposes. A song can therefore play in a file manager yet be absent from the car because the player has not scanned its folder, lacks media permission, does not support Android Auto, or is temporarily hidden from the launcher. Start by locating the failure on the phone, then check the player’s library and Android Auto availability before troubleshooting cables.
Understand what Android Auto can and cannot display
Android Auto is a phone-projection platform, not a universal file browser. The car screen receives a driving-optimized interface from an Android Auto-compatible media app installed on the phone. Google’s guidance requires the app to support Android Auto and to be signed in on the phone before Android Auto starts. You then choose that app from the car display’s app launcher or, in some interfaces, from the recent-apps area.
This creates two separate layers:
- Android Auto availability: the player must be allowed to present a car interface. An ordinary file manager or a music app without Android Auto support will not appear simply because it can open an MP3 on the phone.
- Player-library visibility: the player must have permission to read storage, include the folder containing the track, and complete its scan. Android Auto can only show songs the player itself knows about.
That distinction explains why connecting a different USB cable, changing USB transfer mode, or clearing Android Auto data is not an evidence-based fix for a player that has failed to index local music. Cable checks matter when Android Auto will not start or keeps disconnecting; they do not make a music app rescan its folders.
Find the exact point of failure first
The track will not play on the phone
Open the same music app you expect to use in the car and play one missing file. If playback fails there, Android Auto is not yet the problem. Check that the file still exists, that it is stored in a folder the app can access, and that the app supports the file type. Resolve the phone-side location, format, or permission issue before changing Android Auto settings.

The track plays on the phone but is absent from the app library
This points to the player’s library configuration or scan state. A file browser proving that the file exists does not prove that the music app has indexed it. Inspect the app’s selected library folders, media permission, and rescan controls. The detailed procedure below uses VLC for Android because its documentation exposes those controls; other players use different names and menus.
The player works on the phone but its icon is missing in the car
This is an Android Auto compatibility or launcher-visibility problem, not necessarily a missing-file problem. Confirm that the installed player is listed as compatible and that it has not been temporarily disabled. Opening the app on the phone can restore a temporarily disabled app on some devices.
Android Auto itself will not connect or keeps dropping
Only after the app and its phone library work should you diagnose the connection. Google’s connection guidance covers the infotainment system, cable quality, hubs, extensions, and vehicle compatibility. Those checks address projection failures, not library indexing.
Fix local music visibility step by step
1. Play a known missing song on the phone
- Locate a track that is absent from the car.
- Open the intended music player, not just a file manager, and play the track from start to finish long enough to confirm that the app can read it.
- Note the folder path where the file is stored. A folder that is visible to one app may not be selected in another app’s library.
If the player cannot open the track, correct that issue first. If it plays, continue without moving the file or changing USB settings.
2. Confirm Android Auto support and sign-in
- On the phone, verify that the player is installed and current enough to offer Android Auto support.
- Check the player’s own description or support documentation for Android Auto compatibility. Google directs users to the app developer for app-specific behavior.
- Open the player and sign in if it requires an account, then start Android Auto.
- On the car display, open the app launcher and look for the player. The most recently used media app may also be available in the recent-apps area.
Google notes that the Play Store’s list of compatible Android Auto apps may require you to be signed in to a Google Account with personalization enabled. If the player is not compatible, its local files cannot be selected through Android Auto even when they play normally on the phone.
3. Check the player’s library folders
For VLC for Android, open VLC on the phone and inspect Media library folders in its settings. Make sure the folder containing the music is selected. VLC’s documentation describes this setting as the place where you choose which folders belong to the media library.

Do not assume that selecting a parent folder always covers every storage location. Verify the actual path, especially if the tracks are on removable storage or were copied into a newly created directory. Menu wording can differ between VLC versions and Android releases.

Android can deny a player access even when the file is visible elsewhere. In Android Settings, open the installed player’s app page, choose Permissions, and allow the storage or music-and-audio permission offered by that Android version. On older versions the label may refer to files and media; on newer versions Android may present separate choices.
VLC’s first-run documentation states that media access is needed to play media and describes choosing folders to scan. If permission was denied during setup, return to Android’s permission screen, grant access, then reopen VLC. Do not treat these VLC instructions as universal menu paths for every player.
5. Enable a rescan and let it finish
VLC documents an Auto rescan option that scans for new or deleted media when VLC starts. Enable it if newly copied songs are not appearing. Close and reopen VLC, keep the phone awake if necessary, and wait for the scan to complete before checking the library.
If you added a large number of files, an incomplete scan can make the library look empty or partial for a while. Avoid repeatedly starting and stopping the app while it is indexing. Once the song appears in VLC’s own music view and plays there, proceed to Android Auto.

6. Reopen Android Auto and select the player
- Close the player and Android Auto if they are still open.
- Reconnect or restart Android Auto after the phone-side library shows the track.
- Open the car display’s app launcher and select the media player.
- Browse the player’s music categories and test the previously missing song while parked.
Android Auto receives the player’s current library; it does not independently scan the phone after you select the app.

When the app is missing from the Android Auto launcher
Check installation and compatibility
First confirm that the player is installed on the phone and that it supports Android Auto. A player can be perfectly functional as a handset app yet provide no Android Auto interface. Google’s Android Auto app-download guidance recommends checking the compatible-app list in the Play Store; visibility of that list can depend on being signed in to a Google Account with personalization enabled.
Reopen a temporarily disabled app
Google says an app that used to appear can be temporarily disabled. Open the player on the phone, then restart Android Auto and check the launcher again. This simple action can reactivate an app that the operating system stopped treating as recently used.
Review Samsung unused-app controls when applicable
Samsung phones may disable unused apps to save battery. Samsung’s labels vary by device and software version, but Google identifies two settings to check: Auto disable unused apps and Put unused apps to sleep. Turn off the relevant unused-app behavior for the player, reopen it, and test Android Auto again. Do not assume these exact labels appear on phones from other manufacturers.
Connection troubleshooting belongs to a different branch
Use this section only when Android Auto itself fails to launch, disconnects, or never shows the car interface. If the player opens in the car and only certain songs are missing, return to the library steps instead.
- Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s infotainment settings.
- Restart the vehicle’s infotainment system, then restart the phone if needed.
- For a wired connection, use a high-quality USB cable shorter than 3 feet (1 metre).
- Connect the phone directly. Do not use a USB hub or extension.
- Try the vehicle’s other supported USB port if it has one.
- Contact the vehicle manufacturer about compatibility when the car system itself is unsupported or malfunctioning.
These are Google’s connection-oriented recommendations. They can restore the Android Auto session, but they do not alter a player’s folder selection or force a local-library scan.
Keep the current player or try another compatible one
Choose based on where the failure occurs rather than on the cable or the car display.

When comparing players, evaluate Android Auto support, folder selection, rescan controls, storage permissions, library organization, and phone playback separately. A player with a polished phone interface is not automatically a suitable Android Auto player.
Common dead ends and why they do not solve this symptom
- Changing USB file-transfer mode: Android Auto projection and a player’s local index are separate functions. File-transfer mode does not select library folders.
- Buying a new cable: A cable is relevant when Android Auto cannot connect reliably. It is not established as a remedy for songs missing from an already working player interface.
- Clearing Android Auto storage first: This can remove app state without correcting the player’s permissions or scan configuration. Use it only when a connection-specific support procedure calls for it, not as the first response to an indexing problem.
- Adding the same folder repeatedly: Duplicate selections do not replace a denied permission or an unfinished scan. Confirm access and let one scan complete.
- Expecting a file manager to appear in the car: Android Auto’s media model is based on compatible media apps and a driving-safe interface, not unrestricted file browsing.
Use a controlled retest instead of changing several things at once
When troubleshooting, change one layer at a time so you know which action helped. Start with one file in one known folder. Confirm that the player can open it, then verify that the folder is selected and permission is granted. After one completed scan, check the player’s phone library again. Only then reconnect Android Auto and test the same file. If you change the folder, player, cable and Android Auto settings together, a successful result will not tell you whether the original issue was indexing or connection.
Test while parked, because the car interface is designed for driving-safe interaction and may limit browsing compared with the phone. Use the player’s own categories, such as albums or artists, after the track appears rather than expecting a raw folder browser. If one song appears but another does not, repeat the phone-side test for the second file; that pattern can indicate a path or file-access difference rather than an Android Auto failure.
Account, version and menu differences to expect
Android settings and app menus change with Android releases, phone manufacturers and player versions. A permission may be called Music and audio, Files and media or another equivalent, and VLC’s settings layout can change even when the underlying controls remain. Use the installed app’s current labels and do not follow an old screenshot literally.
Google’s compatible-app listing can also look different depending on account sign-in and personalization settings. If a player is not listed, verify the account state and the developer’s current Android Auto support information before concluding that the car is at fault. VideoLAN release notes mention Android Auto-related changes across VLC releases, so behavior documented for an older VLC build may not match the current one. The reliable test is whether the installed build shows the selected folder and plays the track on the phone before Android Auto is started.

- Phone manufacturer and model.
- Android version.
- Exact music-player name and installed version.
- Whether the missing file plays in that player on the phone.
- The folder path containing the file and whether it is internal or removable storage.
- Whether the player appears in the Android Auto launcher.
- Whether Android Auto connects consistently, and whether the connection is wired or wireless.
- Whether the issue affects every local file or only particular folders or formats.
Use the player’s support channel for app-specific indexing, permission, or format questions. Google explicitly directs users to the app website or developer when a media app behaves incorrectly. Use vehicle-manufacturer support for car compatibility and infotainment faults. This separation prevents a connection repair from being mistaken for a library repair.
A compact decision checklist
- Cannot play on the phone: fix the file, path, format, or permission in the player first.
- Plays on the phone but is absent from the player library: select the correct folder, grant media access, enable rescanning, and reopen the player.
- Player library is correct but the app is absent in the car: verify Android Auto compatibility, sign-in, and temporary-disable settings.
- App appears but Android Auto will not connect: check infotainment settings, restart the system, and use a direct high-quality cable shorter than 1 metre for wired use.
- Still unresolved: record versions and symptoms, then contact the player developer or vehicle manufacturer according to the failing layer.
