Local AI can make a laptop feel slower or lose charge faster because some model work runs on the computer instead of a remote server. The actual impact depends on the processor and neural-processing hardware, the model and request, power mode, software version, and everything else running at the same time. There is no reliable universal percentage for battery drain or slowdown: vendor descriptions explain how local features are designed, but they do not provide a standardized, cross-laptop measurement.
What “local AI” means on a laptop
A local, or on-device, AI feature performs at least part of its inference on your laptop. That may involve the CPU, integrated or discrete GPU, and—on newer systems—an NPU (neural processing unit). Keeping computation on the device can reduce dependence on an internet connection and may improve privacy or responsiveness, but it also consumes the laptop’s own compute and power budget.
“Local” does not mean every request is processed locally, nor does it mean two laptops run the same feature in the same way. Microsoft describes Phi Silica as a small, NPU-optimized language model designed to run entirely on supported Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. Apple says Apple Intelligence evaluates requests and handles many on-device, while more complex requests can be sent to Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s architecture is specific to Apple Intelligence; it is not a rule for every AI product.
Why support differs between otherwise similar laptops
- Required CPU, GPU, or NPU capabilities may be absent or disabled.
- The operating-system build and AI feature version can determine whether a local model is available.
- Language, region, account, and feature rollout rules can change what is offered.
- Some models need local storage. Apple’s cited Apple Intelligence setup guidance lists 7 GB of on-device storage for the supported configuration.
Before diagnosing performance, identify the exact feature, app, laptop model, operating-system version, language, and power state. A feature that is cloud-assisted on one machine may be local on another.

Why is my laptop slow when using AI?
AI competes with ordinary workloads
Inference uses compute, memory bandwidth, and sometimes graphics resources. If you are running a browser with many tabs, a video call, a game, a large download, or a photo and video export at the same time, the AI request shares those resources. The result can be a delayed response, stuttering interface, louder fans, or slower performance in unrelated applications. That correlation does not prove the AI model alone caused the slowdown; background work may be the limiting factor.
The model and request change the workload
A short classification or transcription task is not equivalent to generating a long answer, summarizing a large document, creating an image, or processing audio continuously. Larger models, longer context, higher-quality media generation, and repeated requests generally require more computation. A feature may also switch between a small local model and a larger remote service depending on the request.
Thermal limits can reduce speed
Sustained computation creates heat. When a laptop approaches its thermal limit, firmware can reduce processor frequency to protect the hardware. Fans may become audible before that happens. A brief request and a long-running batch job therefore can feel very different, even on the same machine and with the same model.

Power settings intentionally trade speed for endurance
Battery-saving settings can restrict peak performance or favor efficiency. On supported Macs, Apple’s power modes make this trade-off explicit: Low Power Mode reduces energy use, while High Power Mode allows higher fan speeds and may improve performance for very intensive workloads on specified models. Automatic mode balances energy use and performance. These are system-wide choices, not an AI-specific acceleration switch.
Why does AI drain my laptop battery?
Every local inference cycle draws energy from the laptop. The amount depends on how long the task runs, which processor performs it, whether the display and other components are active, and whether the laptop is charging. A long conversation, continuous camera analysis, or repeated image generation can keep hardware busy longer than an occasional short request.
No published statistic establishes a typical battery percentage consumed by local AI across laptops. Microsoft’s descriptions of Phi Silica’s low latency and energy efficiency are design claims, not independent, apples-to-apples battery tests. Do not treat a vendor efficiency statement as a measured battery advantage for your particular model.

Battery drain may have another cause
- A browser tab, synchronisation process, video call, or backup may be active at the same time.
- An operating-system update can leave indexing, migration, or other maintenance tasks running in the background.
- An ageing battery has less usable capacity, so the same workload produces a larger percentage drop.
- High screen brightness, a high refresh rate, peripheral devices, and poor cellular or Wi-Fi reception can add load.
Compare battery behavior during the AI task with ordinary use under similar brightness, network, and application conditions. A slowdown or drain that occurs without AI points to a broader system or battery issue.

How to determine whether the AI feature is actually local
- Name the feature and version. Record the app, operating system, laptop model, and the exact action that feels slow or power-hungry.
- Check the vendor’s architecture description. Microsoft identifies Phi Silica as an on-device model for supported Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. Apple says Apple Intelligence handles many requests on-device but can use Private Cloud Compute for more complex requests.
- Confirm eligibility. Check supported hardware, operating-system release, language, and region. A feature may be unavailable, cloud-assisted, or running a different model when one requirement is missing.
- Repeat a controlled test. Use the same prompt or file once on battery and once while connected to power, with other heavy applications closed. Note response time, fan behavior, and battery percentage, but do not generalize one informal test into a universal battery figure.
If the service does not document where a request is processed, describe it as “AI-assisted” rather than assuming it is entirely local.
How to stop AI features from slowing down your laptop
Reduce competing work first
- Close or pause applications performing exports, synchronization, virtual machines, games, or large downloads.
- Run long AI jobs when you do not need an immediate video call or other latency-sensitive task.
- Keep adequate free storage so the operating system and model have room for caches and temporary files.
Choose the appropriate power mode
On a supported Mac, review the power setting separately for On battery and On power adapter. Apple states that Low Power Mode reduces energy use to extend battery life. Automatic is intended to balance energy use and performance. High Power Mode can raise fan speed and may improve very intensive workloads on listed Mac models; it is not available on every Mac. Apple also gives a narrow recommendation for a 96W USB-C adapter with certain 14-inch MacBook Pro configurations when High Power Mode is used while charging. That recommendation is model-specific and does not imply that a special charger fixes AI battery use generally.

Use shorter or less demanding requests
Summarize a document in sections instead of sending an entire archive at once, reduce image resolution when quality permits, and avoid leaving a continuous AI monitor active when you only need an occasional check. These changes reduce the duration or intensity of computation without claiming a fixed percentage of savings.
Keep software current, but allow maintenance to finish
Updates can change model support, performance, and power behavior. Immediately after an update, however, background tasks may temporarily increase heat and battery use. Apple’s iPhone and iPad guidance says such work can continue after installation and recommends waiting a few days before reassessing. That advice applies to those mobile devices, not as a laptop-specific menu procedure; on a Mac or Windows laptop, use the platform’s current update and activity guidance.

Start with the laptop’s own activity view
Use the current battery, energy, or task-activity screen for your operating system to see which application or system process is active and whether work is occurring in the foreground or background. Apple’s documented activity listings for iPhone show app and system battery use and foreground or background time. Mac and Windows interfaces are different, so do not copy the iPhone menu path to a laptop; follow the instructions for your exact operating-system release.

Record the application name, duration, battery percentage before and after, charger state, and whether the display was on. One observation is not a benchmark, but several observations under the same conditions can show whether the AI app is consistently involved.
Check battery condition separately
If the operating system reports reduced capacity, a service recommendation, unexpected shutdowns, or rapid decline during ordinary tasks, treat that as a battery-health problem rather than an AI-performance problem. Battery life depends on capacity as well as software and hardware usage. Replacing or servicing a worn battery may address the symptom, but it does not prove that local AI was the original cause.
Comparing local-AI laptop options without misleading claims
When choosing hardware for on-device AI, compare the factors below against your actual workload rather than relying on a single “AI PC” label.

The available vendor material does not provide independent, comparable laptop measurements. It therefore cannot support ranking models by battery advantage or quoting a universal slowdown.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
Local execution necessarily uses the laptop’s resources, so it can affect responsiveness and energy use. The size of that effect is workload- and device-specific. Current Microsoft and Apple documentation establishes supported architectures and power controls, not a universal battery-drain percentage or speed penalty. Treat any number that lacks a stated laptop model, software version, workload, power state, and measurement method as insufficient for a general claim.
The practical approach is to identify the feature’s execution path, control competing work, select the appropriate power mode, and measure your own repeatable workload. That produces a useful answer for your laptop without confusing a vendor design description with an independent benchmark.
