A sudden LLM-agent bill usually comes from a change in work performed, not from the final answer alone. An agent run can contain multiple model calls, retries, handoffs to subagents, paid tool requests and sandbox compute. Input, cached input, output and reasoning tokens can all contribute, while a growing conversation history can make every later call larger.
Start with aggregate provider usage to identify the time window, project, model or user that changed. Then follow the most expensive runs through traces, where repeated calls, retries, oversized tool results and handoffs become visible. Finally, change one likely driver and compare representative runs for total cost, latency, cache behavior and task quality.
What an LLM-agent bill actually includes
An agent is a workflow, not necessarily one request. The controller may ask a model what to do, call a search or database tool, send the result back to a model, invoke a specialist agent, retry a failed call and then ask for a final response. Each model request can be metered separately. Tool vendors, browser services, code sandboxes and other infrastructure can add charges outside the model invoice.

OpenAI’s agent observability guidance states: An agent may make several model calls while completing a task. Count every call in the run, including calls that produce tool arguments or handoffs, not just the call that writes the visible answer. Its guidance also says that reasoning tokens are billed as output tokens. A short-looking response can therefore follow a long internal computation.

The usage categories to separate
- Input tokens: the system instructions, user content, conversation history, tool definitions and tool results sent to the model.
- Cached input: an eligible portion reused by the provider’s prompt-cache mechanism. It may have a different rate from ordinary input.
- Output tokens: generated text and, where the provider counts them there, reasoning tokens.
- Request count: the number of model calls. A stable token size can still become expensive when call count rises.
- Retries: repeated attempts after timeouts, rate limits, validation failures or tool errors.
- Subagent and handoff work: calls made by specialist agents or other workers invoked by the main agent.
- Non-model charges: paid tools, search, data services, image or audio processing, sandbox execution and third-party infrastructure.
Keep the provider and model attached to every usage record. Token counts cannot be priced correctly when records from different models or providers are mixed together, and an API usage total is not necessarily the same as the final invoice after subscriptions, scale tiers, credits or other billing adjustments.
First response: confirm the spike and line up the clocks
Do not begin by changing prompts. First establish that the increase is real and that the datasets describe the same period.
- Choose a comparison window. Record the first and last UTC timestamps of the high-cost period and choose a representative baseline with similar traffic and task mix.
- Check the correct account and projects. Confirm the organization, project, environment and model family shown in the provider dashboard. A project filter left off can make a local incident look global.
- Align dashboard and application timestamps. OpenAI’s Usage Dashboard reports in UTC. Its one-minute intervals are for usage data, not billing data. An application log window and an invoice window may therefore have different boundaries.
- Record what each total means. Note whether a number is token usage, request usage, estimated cost, an invoice line or a third-party charge. Do not subtract unlike totals and call the result a saving.
Export or record the dashboard view before investigating. Include the interval, project filter, model, token categories and request count. This gives you a fixed reference if traffic continues while you debug.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Find the dimension that changed
Compare the spike window with the baseline across the dimensions your instrumentation can supply. The goal is to find the first measurable change, not to guess a cause from a single expensive request.
| Dimension | Signal to compare | What a rise can indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Time interval | Requests and tokens per minute or hour | A deployment, traffic burst, scheduled job or retry storm |
| Project or environment | Total calls, input, output and estimated cost | One product, test environment or tenant consuming the increase |
| Model | Calls and token categories by model | Routing changed, a fallback model activated or a more expensive model received routine work |
| User, customer or API key | Runs and tokens per actor | A single tenant, integration or automated client driving volume |
| Workflow or agent | Run count, calls per run and cost per run | One task type becoming more iterative or receiving larger context |
| Token category | Input, cached input, output and reasoning tokens | History growth, longer generation, deeper reasoning or cache behavior changing |
| Execution events | Retries, tool calls, handoffs and failures | A loop, timeout, validation problem or tool outage |
Provider response fields differ by endpoint. OpenAI documents different usage structures for Chat Completions and Responses, so normalize records in your own telemetry without assuming that a field name from one endpoint exists in another. Preserve the raw provider response alongside normalized fields for later auditing.
Follow the most expensive run through its trace
Aggregate data tells you when and where costs rose. A run-level trace explains why. Sort runs by total model cost if your system calculates it, or by total input plus output tokens when a current price table is unavailable. Select several high-cost runs, not only the single maximum, because an outlier may be a legitimate large task.

What to inspect in each run
- Call count and sequence: list every model request in time order, including calls that returned errors or only produced tool arguments.
- Prompt growth: compare the input size of the first, middle and final calls. A steadily growing history often explains a gradual cost increase.
- Tool arguments and results: look for full documents, verbose logs, duplicate records or unbounded search results being pasted back into the next prompt.
- Retries and backoff: identify the original error, retry count, delay and whether the retry sent the entire context again.
- Handoffs and subagents: record which agent started each child task and whether the parent resent the same context to every child.
- Termination: check whether the agent reached a normal stop condition or exhausted a call, token or time limit.
An expensive trace is not automatically a faulty loop. Diagnose a loop only when the trace shows repeated steps, repeated tool calls, a retry sequence or back-and-forth handoffs that do not advance the task. Some difficult tasks legitimately require several calls.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Calculate cost per run consistently
For each model call, retain the provider, model, input tokens, cached-input tokens, output tokens, reasoning tokens when exposed, cache-write or cache-creation tokens when exposed, and any provider-reported charge. Sum those fields across the run. Add tool and compute charges from their own records. If a rate is unavailable for a historical model or region, label the result an estimate and keep the underlying token counts.
Check context growth before blaming the model
Agent context can expand in several places: a preserved session history, a large system prompt, tool schemas, retrieved documents, tool results or a parent agent’s transcript. The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation notes that preserved session history may be fed as input in later runs, affecting subsequent input-token counts. A user who sends only a short new message can therefore trigger a large bill if the session has accumulated many earlier turns.
A practical context audit
- Capture the serialized messages and tool definitions for the first call and for a high-cost later call.
- Measure the token contribution of system instructions, history, tools, retrieved material and tool results separately when your tokenizer or provider usage data allows it.
- Identify entries that are duplicated, stale or irrelevant to the current task.
- Set explicit limits for retained turns, retrieved documents, search results and log lines.
- Summarize or compact history only when the resulting task quality remains acceptable; a summary that causes extra correction calls can cost more than the original history.
Do not remove context blindly. The diagnostic question is whether each additional token improves the probability of a correct completion enough to justify its price and latency.
Understand prompt-cache behavior and its price
Prompt caching is conditional reuse, not a universal discount. The provider must recognize an eligible matching prefix, and eligibility, cache lifetime, ordering rules and supported models vary. A small change to an otherwise stable prefix can turn a cache hit into a full-price input request.
OpenAI’s cache guidance identifies changes to tools and their ordering as cache-sensitive differences and recommends stable reusable prefixes where the model supports them. Keep invariant instructions, schemas and other reusable material in a stable order; put per-request content after that prefix. This is a design aid, not a guarantee of a hit.

Read the cache fields
- Cached-token usage: how much input was served from an existing cache entry.
- Cache-write or creation usage: how much input was stored for future reuse.
- Cache diagnostics: provider-specific reasons for a miss, eligibility limits or minimum prefix size.
- Request pattern: whether subsequent calls arrive before the cache expires and reuse the same prefix.
Cache writes and reads can have different rates. Anthropic’s pricing documentation accessed on October 13, 2026 lists a five-minute cache write at 1.25 times the base input price and a one-hour cache write at 2 times the base input price in its documented default examples; a cache read is listed at 0.1 times the base input price for those examples. The same page lists cache-read multipliers of 0.025 times for Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, and 0.05 times for Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5. These are provider- and model-specific figures, not a cross-provider rule. Confirm the current model, region and pricing page before using them in a budget.
Test caching instead of assuming it works
After stabilizing a prefix or changing cache settings, send several representative requests. Compare cached tokens, cache-write tokens, total input tokens, total cost, latency and task quality with the old configuration. OpenAI’s cache-diagnostics guidance specifically recommends this before concluding that a change saved money. A workload with infrequent reuse can pay repeated write charges without receiving enough reads to offset them.
Common causes of a sudden increase
More model calls per task
A planner, verifier or formatter may have been added, or a stop condition may have changed. Compare calls per run before and after the deployment. If quality is unchanged, test a bounded call budget or combine steps only where the output contract remains reliable.
Retry storms
Timeouts, rate limits, malformed tool arguments and strict output validation can cause full-context retries. Look for a rise in errors followed by repeated requests. Use exponential backoff with a maximum attempt count, preserve the original error, and avoid retrying non-retryable validation failures.
Tool output that is too large
Returning an entire database row set, document, stack trace or search page can multiply input tokens on the next call. Paginate results, select fields, cap log lines and summarize only after retaining the identifiers needed for follow-up. Measure both the tool response size and the resulting model input.
History or schema expansion
A new memory feature, extra tool definitions or a longer system prompt can affect every call. Compare serialized prompt components between baseline and spike runs. Tool order changes can also reduce cache reuse.

Routing and fallback changes
A router may send simple requests to a more expensive model, or a failed primary model may route all traffic to a fallback. Break usage down by model and record the routing reason. Route only tasks with demonstrated quality requirements to the larger model.
Subagents and handoffs
Delegation can improve quality while multiplying calls and repeating context. Count child runs and measure the context passed to each. Set clear scopes and stop conditions so a parent does not ask several specialists to perform the same work.
Traffic or tenant changes
A bill can rise even when cost per run is stable if request volume, scheduled jobs or one customer’s usage increases. Compare total runs with cost per run before changing the agent itself.
Choose the right investigation method
Use the least expensive source that can answer the question, then move to finer-grained evidence when it cannot.
| Method | Granularity | Best question answered | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provider usage dashboard | Organization, project, model and time interval | When did usage rise and which project or model changed? | Usually cannot identify the exact run or tool step |
| Per-request usage records | Individual model call | Which calls used input, cached input or output tokens? | May not show the parent-child execution relationship |
| Run-level agent accounting | All model calls in one run, with request entries | How much did this task cost in aggregate? | Requires consistent run identifiers and rate data |
| Trace and span observability | Run, model call, tool step, retry and handoff | Which step repeated or produced the expensive context? | Prompt and tool data raise privacy, retention and access questions |
| Invoice and billing records | Charged amount and billing period | What amount was actually invoiced? | May not map cleanly to application run timestamps or token categories |
Provider-native dashboards are the right first check for time, project and usage changes. Add tracing when aggregate totals cannot identify the run or step. LangSmith describes end-to-end agent traces and dashboards for token usage, latency, errors and cost breakdowns, with support for multiple SDKs and OpenTelemetry. Treat that as a capability description, not a performance assessment. Whichever system you choose, verify what prompt data it stores, who can access it, how long it is retained and how it calculates prices.
Run a controlled fix
Change one likely driver at a time where practical. Otherwise, a lower bill cannot be attributed and a quality regression can be missed.

- Form a measurable hypothesis. For example: input tokens rose because the session history is resent on every call.
- Choose representative tasks. Include short, medium and difficult runs, normal tool use and known failure cases. Do not benchmark only an unusually cheap run.
- Apply one change. Bound retries, cap tool output, remove irrelevant context, stabilize a cacheable prefix, adjust routing or stop repeated work after a tool failure.
- Run the same task set. Keep traffic, model version and other material settings comparable.
- Compare four outcomes. Record total cost, latency, task quality and failure or retry rate. Add cached-token and cache-write data for cache experiments.
- Inspect the traces again. Confirm that the suspected call, token category or tool step actually changed rather than merely shifting cost elsewhere.
A cheaper response is not automatically a cheaper run. A shorter answer that triggers a correction, another tool call or a human review can increase total cost and delay.
Operational safeguards that prevent repeat spikes
- Assign a stable run ID, parent ID and project or tenant ID to every model call and tool span.
- Store provider, model, endpoint, input, cached-input, output and reasoning usage fields separately from your normalized totals.
- Track calls per run, retries, handoffs, subagent count, tool-result size and final outcome.
- Alert on cost per run, calls per run, input tokens per call and retry rate, not only on monthly spend.
- Set maximum calls, maximum retries, maximum context size and maximum tool-result size for each workflow.
- Keep model and price metadata with historical records so a later rate change does not rewrite past estimates.
- Redact secrets and restrict access to prompts, tool arguments and traces. Debugging data can contain customer content.
- Review alerts against representative quality samples before disabling a useful but expensive step.
Failure modes in cost investigations
Using answer length as the proxy
The visible answer omits input, hidden reasoning, retries and tool work. Inspect the full run instead.
Calling every expensive run a loop
Use trace evidence of repeated, non-progressing work. A complex but successful task may legitimately contain many calls.

Dashboard usage intervals, subscription terms, credits and invoice dates can differ. Label each total and align periods before comparing them.
Assuming cache reads are free
Reads can be discounted while writes have a separate charge, and a cache miss can restore full input pricing. Check provider-specific fields and rates.
Optimizing one outlier
Test a workload distribution that reflects production. A change that saves one large task may hurt the many ordinary tasks that dominate spend.
Ignoring non-model charges
Search, data, sandbox and third-party services can remain expensive after token use falls. Include them in the run’s cost ledger.
Current figures and documentation cautions
Provider prices, model names, cache rules and dashboard features change. The Anthropic multipliers above are documented examples accessed October 13, 2026, not permanent rates. OpenAI’s one-minute dashboard interval describes usage granularity, not a one-minute billing unit. Before publishing a budget, rerun the calculation with the current model, region, endpoint and account terms.
Bottom line
Diagnose an LLM-agent cost spike from the outside in: align the billing and application windows, identify the changed project, model, user or token category, then trace representative runs until repeated calls, context growth, retries, handoffs, cache misses or paid tools explain the total. Apply one targeted change and validate cost, latency and quality together. This method distinguishes a real execution problem from legitimate workload growth and prevents a misleading fix based on answer length alone.
