If you ask, “Why does Linux show so little free RAM?”, the short answer is that Linux deliberately uses idle memory for filesystem cache, kernel buffers, and reclaimable kernel objects. “Free” in a memory display usually means completely unused RAM, not all RAM that applications can obtain. A low free figure is normally harmless when available memory is healthy and the system is not swapping or stalling.
The key distinction: free RAM is not available RAM
Linux reports several different views of physical memory. The narrowest is MemFree: pages that are unused right now. It excludes memory holding useful cached files, kernel bookkeeping, and other data that can be reclaimed when a program needs space.
The practical question is not “What percentage is free?” but “How much memory can the kernel give a new application without disruptive swapping?” The answer is estimated by MemAvailable. A small MemFree value alongside a healthy MemAvailable value is usually normal. Low MemAvailable, rising swap use, allocation failures, or noticeable pauses deserve investigation.
The free command reads its data from /proc/meminfo. Its labels are summaries, and their exact presentation can differ between procps releases and Linux versions, so interpret the fields by definition rather than by color or a single dashboard percentage.

What the fields in free mean
Run free -h for a human-readable snapshot. A typical display contains these concepts:
| Field | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| total | Physical RAM visible to the operating system for the memory zone being reported. | The denominator for capacity, not a measure of pressure. |
| free | Completely unused RAM (the MemFree value). |
Useful as one input, but not a standalone health metric. |
| used | A derived value whose formula depends on the procps version. Modern free commonly treats it as total minus available. |
Check the version’s manual if a dashboard’s “used” number appears different. |
| buff/cache | Kernel buffers plus filesystem page cache and reclaimable slab memory. | Much of this can be reclaimed under pressure; it is not automatically a leak. |
| available | An estimate of memory that can be allocated to new applications without swapping, while retaining enough cache for normal operation. | The first practical headroom indicator. |
| swap used | Memory currently occupying swap space. | Interpret with current activity and responsiveness; a nonzero value alone does not prove an emergency. |
The buffers value is kernel buffer memory. The cache value covers page cache and slabs in the summary used by free; the displayed buff/cache is their combined total. Because these categories overlap with reclaimable kernel state, adding or subtracting columns from different tools can produce apparently contradictory totals.

Why Linux uses RAM for cache
Filesystem page cache
Reading a file from storage is far slower than reading a page already in RAM. Linux therefore keeps recently used file data in the page cache after an application has read it. A second read can be served from memory instead of waiting for the disk or SSD. The cache grows when spare RAM exists and shrinks when applications need that RAM.
This behavior makes a machine look “full” even when it has substantial reclaimable capacity. Cached pages are backed by files, so the kernel can discard clean copies and fetch them again later. Dirty pages must be written back before their memory is reused, but they are still managed differently from anonymous application memory.
Kernel buffers
Buffers are memory used for kernel bookkeeping and temporary block-device-related data. They are included in the traditional free summary because they are not ordinary application allocations. Their presence reflects work the kernel is doing, not a program that has permanently consumed the machine.
Reclaimable slab objects
The kernel stores metadata for filesystems, directories, dentries, inodes, and other internal structures in slab caches. Some slab objects are reclaimable; others are in active use or cannot be discarded immediately. This is why the available-memory calculation does not simply assume that every byte labeled “cache” can be recovered.

Why MemAvailable is the better first signal
Linux kernel documentation defines MemAvailable as “An estimate of how much memory is available for starting new applications, without swapping.” The estimate is deliberately conservative. It combines MemFree with reclaimable portions of file-backed memory and slab caches, then accounts for low-watermark reserves in each memory zone.
The same documentation notes that the system needs some page cache to function well and that not all reclaimable slab will actually be reclaimable because some items are in use. The free(1) manual makes the same distinction: unlike the old free or cache fields, available accounts for page cache and for slab objects that cannot all be reclaimed.
Consequently, MemAvailable is an estimate, not a guaranteed allocation quota. A workload can still fail an allocation because of fragmentation, a strict cgroup limit, a per-process limit, a reserved memory zone, or a sudden burst that arrives faster than reclaim can run. Those cases require looking beyond the single number.
Read the numbers in a repeatable way
-
Take a baseline snapshot:
free -hRecord
total, available, swap, andbuff/cache. Repeat the command during the slowdown instead of relying on a value remembered from an earlier boot.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Inspect the underlying counters:
grep -E '^(MemTotal|MemFree|MemAvailable|Buffers|Cached|SReclaimable|SwapTotal|SwapFree|SwapCached):' /proc/meminfoCachedshows file page-cache memory, whileSReclaimableshows reclaimable slab. Comparing these with MemAvailable explains why “free” can be small without indicating exhaustion. -
Check whether swap is active rather than merely allocated. A system can have swap configured and a small amount used without being under current pressure. Look for swap-in and swap-out activity with the monitoring tool already available on your distribution, and correlate it with the time users notice a slowdown.

Look for corroborating symptoms: failed allocations, processes being killed by the out-of-memory mechanism, long application stalls, or sustained disk activity caused by paging. A low MemFree value without these symptoms is generally not actionable.
-
If headroom remains low, identify the largest consumers before changing settings. Distinguish anonymous memory (heap, stacks, and other process-private pages) from file-backed cache; they require different remedies.

When a low free value is normal
- MemAvailable is comfortably above the amount your next workload needs. Cache is doing useful work and can contract as applications start.
- Swap is configured but not continuously active. A few pages may have been moved out earlier and can remain there until touched again.
- Applications remain responsive. Normal cache reclaim should not produce sustained stalls.
- Buff/cache grows after file-heavy work. That growth is expected; it is a performance aid until another workload needs the space.
There is no universal “Linux should keep X percent free” rule. The right margin depends on workload, burst size, storage speed, memory limits, and how much latency the application can tolerate.
When low available memory needs investigation
| Observation | Likely interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Low MemFree, normal MemAvailable, no stalls | RAM is being used for reclaimable cache or buffers. | Continue monitoring; no cleanup action is indicated. |
| Low MemAvailable and rising swap activity | Applications are competing for physical memory and reclaim is no longer sufficient. | Find the largest anonymous consumers and identify the workload change. |
| Available memory falls during a repeatable job | The job’s peak working set may exceed the machine’s practical headroom. | Measure the job’s process memory and its container or service limits. |
| Allocation failures or out-of-memory kills | The system or a memory-control group could not satisfy an allocation. | Review kernel logs, cgroup limits, and the process that was terminated. |
| Large slab growth with poor reclaim | Kernel caches or in-use objects are occupying memory. | Inspect slab-related counters and the filesystem or service generating them. |
Do not infer a leak from cache growth alone. A leak is more plausible when anonymous memory or unreclaimable kernel memory rises continuously and does not fall after the workload stops.
Linux and procps version differences
MemAvailable has existed since Linux 3.14. On older kernels, or with older procps implementations, the value shown by free may be emulated or may fall back to older behavior. Two machines can therefore display different “available” or “used” figures even when their physical memory state is similar.
When comparing a server, a container host, and a desktop, record the kernel version and the procps version that supplied free. Prefer the raw /proc/meminfo fields for automation, and document which formula a dashboard uses for “used.” Never compare a modern MemAvailable-based graph directly with an older graph that subtracts only buffers and cache.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
1. Establish the state at the moment of trouble
Run free -h and save the output with a timestamp. Note whether the problem is a one-time spike or a trend. A single snapshot cannot show whether memory is being reclaimed successfully.
2. Break down the reclaimable portion
Read MemAvailable, Cached, SReclaimable, SwapTotal, and SwapFree in /proc/meminfo. This separates file cache from reclaimable slab and prevents a broad “used RAM” number from hiding the cause.
3. Correlate memory with pressure
Check swap-in and swap-out rates, allocation errors, and user-visible latency at the same time. If available memory is low but there is no swap activity or slowdown, the immediate risk may be lower than the headline number suggests. If all three move together, continue to the process investigation.
4. Find large anonymous consumers
Use a process monitor such as top or an equivalent tool, then inspect the largest processes. A simple sortable view is:
ps -eo pid,comm,%mem,rss --sort=-rss | head
RSS is resident memory, not a perfect measure of unique ownership because shared pages can appear in multiple processes. For a suspicious process, inspect its /proc/PID/status and memory mappings, and check whether the growth is heap, stacks, shared libraries, or mapped files.
5. Correct the workload, not the symptom
Stop or reconfigure the process that is growing unexpectedly, reduce its concurrency, or assign an appropriate memory limit. If the workload is legitimate and consistently exceeds available headroom, adding physical RAM or changing the deployment size may be justified. Do not make that decision from MemFree alone.

Why you should not routinely drop caches
Linux already reclaims page cache and eligible slab memory when allocations require it. Manually discarding caches throws away data that may be read again, causing avoidable storage I/O and slower application response. Cache-dropping commands are useful for narrowly controlled experiments, not as routine maintenance or a response to a low MemFree number.
Likewise, disabling swap solely because a graph shows some swap used can remove a safety margin. Determine whether the machine is experiencing sustained paging and latency before changing virtual-memory policy.
Comparing tools and dashboards correctly
Different tools can be accurate yet appear to disagree because they calculate summaries differently. Compare them on these four axes:
| Comparison axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Definition of “used” | Is it total minus available, or total minus free, buffers, and cache? |
| Available memory | Does the view expose the kernel’s MemAvailable estimate, or an older substitute? |
| Pressure evidence | Does it show swap activity, allocation failures, or memory-pressure indicators in addition to capacity? |
| Memory type | Can it distinguish anonymous process memory from file-backed cache and reclaimable slab? |
A dashboard that answers all four questions is more useful than one that displays a single “RAM used” percentage. For incident work, retain the raw counters so the calculation can be reproduced after the event.
Common misconceptions
“Linux is using all my memory.”
It is using most of the RAM for a mixture of active application pages, kernel state, and cache. “Using” does not mean “unavailable.” The available estimate includes memory that can be reclaimed without swapping.
“Buffers and cache prove a memory leak.”
No. Their normal purpose is to accelerate I/O and retain kernel metadata. Investigate a leak when memory that cannot be reclaimed—often anonymous memory—keeps increasing and the workload does not explain it.
“A low free percentage means the server is about to fail.”
No universal percentage predicts failure. Evaluate MemAvailable, swap activity, allocation behavior, and observed latency together.
“Every byte labeled reclaimable can be recovered instantly.”
No. MemAvailable discounts reclaimable objects that are in use and reserves memory needed to keep each zone operating. It is a realistic estimate, not a promise that every cached page will disappear on demand.
Bottom line
Linux shows little free RAM because it puts idle memory to work. Use MemFree to see completely unused pages, but use MemAvailable as the first indicator of whether new applications have room. Confirm concern with swap activity, allocation failures, or real slowdowns; otherwise, a large buff/cache value is usually evidence of normal caching rather than a problem.
