Short answer: Laptop prices move when the cost or availability of processors, memory, storage, displays and other parts changes, and when manufacturers and retailers decide how much of that change to pass on. A shortage usually affects particular configurations or production platforms rather than every laptop equally. In 2026, memory costs remain a major pressure while CPU supply has improved from its earlier squeeze, so the price and stock of one model can differ sharply from another.
Market forecasts describe broad scenarios, not the live price or inventory of a specific listing. For a purchase decision, compare the exact configuration, total delivered price, seller, delivery estimate, warranty and return terms on the day you buy.
What determines a laptop’s price?
A notebook’s retail price starts with its bill of materials (BOM): processor, DRAM memory, SSD storage, display, motherboard, battery, chassis, wireless hardware and other components. Manufacturing, software licensing, logistics, support, retailer costs and profit margins are added afterward. A change in one input does not produce an automatic, one-for-one change at checkout because companies can absorb costs, alter specifications, use older inventory or change margins.
Memory and SSD storage
DRAM is the working memory used by applications, while NAND flash is used in SSD storage. Both are significant inputs. TrendForce’s March 2026 notebook analysis said DRAM and NAND Flash supply had tightened from the start of the year. In its 1Q26 scenario, DRAM and SSD together rose from roughly 15% of a notebook’s BOM under normal conditions to more than 30%. Those are TrendForce estimates for its model and period, not a measurement that applies to every laptop.

When memory or SSD contract prices rise, a maker can keep the same specification and charge more, ship a lower-capacity configuration at the old price, or accept a smaller margin. Retailers may still have stock purchased at earlier costs, so two apparently identical laptops can have different prices while that inventory is being cleared.
Processors and platform allocations
CPU pricing and allocation also affect the equation. TrendForce reported increases for certain entry-level and older-generation notebook processors in March 2026, alongside tighter availability for some lower-end platforms and possible shortages in some entry-level AMD platforms. This does not mean every processor is scarce. A shortage can be limited to one generation, price tier, or design platform, leaving premium or newer systems available while an inexpensive model disappears.
Manufacturing capacity and technology changes
Supply cannot expand instantly. HP’s 2026 manufacturing explainer says an advanced fabrication facility can cost $10 billion to $20 billion and take three to five years from groundbreaking to production. That is broad industry context, not a prediction that a particular laptop shortage will last that long. Retooling for a new process, research and development, quality assurance, logistics constraints and shifts in demand can all change cost or output before a new facility is ready.

Inventory, margins and channel decisions
Manufacturers, distributors and retailers choose how to handle higher input costs. Advance procurement and lower-cost stock can cushion an increase for a while. TrendForce’s September 2026 update warned that this buffer would fade as those inventories were depleted. The eventual shelf price therefore depends on the timing of purchases, remaining stock, competition, demand and the margin each participant is trying to preserve.
What the major 2026 forecasts actually say
Forecasts are useful for understanding pressure on the market, but their assumptions must stay attached to each number. The following figures come from separate publications and should not be combined into a single guaranteed outcome.
| Source and date | Figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| TrendForce, March 2026 | More than 30% of BOM from DRAM and SSD in its 1Q26 scenario, versus roughly 15% normally | A modeled component-share change for the stated notebook scenario |
| TrendForce, March 2026 | Price increase approaching 40% for a US$900 mainstream notebook | A scenario combining memory and CPU increases while brands and channel partners keep existing margins; not a 40% rise for every laptop |
| TrendForce, September 2026 | CPU, DRAM and SSD at about 68% of BOM in 3Q26, versus approximately 45% for its earlier benchmark | A benchmark-model estimate showing how key components changed in its cost structure |
| TrendForce, September 2026 | Approximately 80% higher price needed to match the 1Q25 gross margin by 3Q26 | A modeled margin-maintenance comparison for a comparable product, not a prediction that retail prices rise 80% |
| Gartner, February 26, 2026 | Combined DRAM and SSD prices forecast to rise 130% by the end of 2026 versus 2025; PC prices forecast to rise 17% | Gartner’s forecast under its own assumptions; it is not interchangeable with TrendForce’s notebook scenarios |
| Gartner, February 26, 2026 | Worldwide PC shipments forecast to fall 10.4% in 2026 | A global shipment forecast, not a final observed result or a country-specific stock report |
Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal said, “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.” That is a forward-looking forecast, not proof that every sub-$500 laptop has already vanished. Gartner also described the forecast as the steepest contraction in device shipments in more than a decade, with higher prices narrowing device choice and lengthening upgrade cycles. Those statements characterize Gartner’s projection rather than an independently verified outcome.

How a shortage changes what you can buy
A shortage can interrupt procurement of a component, delay assembly, or force a brand to prioritize one platform over another. The visible result may be a delayed ship date, fewer memory or storage choices, a changed configuration, a higher price, or no listing for the model you searched for. The effect is uneven because manufacturers have different contracts, inventories and product mixes.

The 2026 timeline matters
TrendForce’s March 2026 report described tighter memory supply and constraints affecting some entry-level CPU platforms. Its September 4, 2026 outlook said CPU supply had markedly improved since the second quarter, allowing brands to gradually normalize procurement and manufacturing. Memory costs were still rising. Treat those statements as time-stamped conditions: a shortage claim from March cannot automatically be applied to September, and neither establishes the live stock status of a particular retailer.
TrendForce forecast a 9.4% year-over-year decline in global notebook shipments for full-year 2026. It said shipments could begin falling in the third quarter after some demand was brought forward into the first half. This is a market forecast, not a confirmed shipment result and not evidence that every country has the same availability.

Why one configuration disappears first
Entry-level systems often use tightly costed platforms with fewer substitute parts. If a specific CPU or memory package is constrained, a manufacturer may keep a higher-priced design in production and pause the cheaper one. A laptop with soldered memory may be impossible to alter quickly, while a model with a replaceable SSD can continue shipping with a different storage supplier. A listing that says “out of stock” therefore tells you about that configuration, not necessarily the whole product family.
How to compare laptops when prices and stock are moving
Use the exact configuration as the unit of comparison. A lower headline price can hide less memory, a smaller SSD, a slower processor, a dimmer display or a different operating-system edition.
Recommended Free Tools
- Write down your workload. Separate ordinary web and office work from gaming, video production, 3D, software development or specialist applications. Buy capacity that serves the workload rather than paying for unused specifications.
- Normalize the specification. Compare processor class and generation, RAM capacity and type, SSD capacity, display size and resolution, graphics hardware, ports and operating system. Record whether memory is soldered and whether a second storage slot exists.
- Check the complete price. Include sales tax, shipping, required accessories and any upgrade cost. A temporary promotion or an older inventory unit may not be repeatable.
- Verify fulfillment. Confirm that the exact configuration is in stock, identify the seller, read the delivery estimate and distinguish a dispatch date from an estimated arrival date.
- Read purchase protections. Check warranty length and coverage, return window, restocking conditions, seller identity and the stated condition of refurbished equipment.
- Recheck before paying. Forecasts cannot tell you whether waiting will save money. Compare current listings again if your budget, deadline or preferred configuration changes.
Match specifications to common workloads
| Workload | What to prioritize | What to avoid paying for without a reason |
|---|---|---|
| Web, documents and video calls | Enough RAM for your multitasking, a responsive SSD, comfortable keyboard and a good webcam | High-end graphics hardware that your applications will not use |
| Gaming | Dedicated graphics performance, cooling, display refresh rate and upgradeable storage | Thin designs whose cooling limits sustained performance |
| Creative work | CPU and GPU performance, color-accurate display, RAM headroom and fast, sizable storage | A low-capacity SSD that forces immediate replacement |
| Development and virtual machines | More memory, a multi-core CPU, reliable keyboard, ports and storage endurance | Entry-level platforms that cannot support your toolchain or containers |
Should you buy now or wait?
There is no evidence here for a universally cheapest date. A purchase is sensible now when your current laptop is failing, your work or study deadline is near, or a verified listing meets your required specification and terms. Waiting can make sense when your device is reliable and you can monitor prices, because component costs, inventory and demand can move in either direction.

Buy now when the decision is need-driven
- Your existing machine cannot run required software or has an unreliable battery, storage device or display.
- You have found the exact configuration you need at a total price you can afford, with acceptable warranty and returns.
- A project deadline makes the cost of delay greater than the possibility of a later discount.
Wait when you have flexibility
- Your current laptop meets your workload and you are considering an upgrade mainly for a speculative saving.
- The available listings force compromises in memory, storage or processor that you will regret.
- A product generation is changing and you can track both the outgoing model’s price and the replacement’s availability.
Set a maximum budget and a minimum specification before monitoring. That prevents a headline discount from persuading you to accept a machine that does not fit your work.
Alternatives when a new laptop is too expensive or unavailable
Consider a refurbished device carefully
A refurbished laptop can reduce the upfront cost, but the available evidence does not establish current laptop-specific refurbished demand or endorse a particular model. Check battery health or replacement policy, warranty duration, return terms, cosmetic grade, charger authenticity and software-support dates. Compare its total risk-adjusted cost with a new system rather than comparing sticker prices alone.
Check upgrade possibilities before ordering
Memory may be soldered, and storage or memory compatibility varies by exact model. Confirm the manufacturer’s service manual, supported capacities, interface and warranty implications before planning an upgrade. Do not assume that a low-priced laptop can be brought up to the performance of a higher tier simply by adding an SSD or RAM.
Common mistakes that produce bad price comparisons
- Treating a forecast as a receipt: a modeled 40% increase for a US$900 benchmark is not proof that your chosen laptop rose 40%.
- Mixing unlike machines: compare the same processor class, memory, storage, display and operating-system configuration.
- Calling every delay a global shortage: a platform constraint can affect one configuration while other models ship normally.
- Ignoring old inventory: an earlier purchase cost can temporarily keep one seller’s price below a newer shipment’s cost.
- Counting an estimated delivery as stock: verify whether the seller actually holds the unit and what happens if the date slips.
- Assuming the cheapest upgrade is possible: soldered components and model-specific limits can make an upgrade impractical.
Bottom line for buyers in 2026
Laptop prices are changing because memory and storage costs remain elevated, processor conditions differ by platform, and companies are deciding how much of those costs to pass through while older inventory lasts. Supply pressure can narrow choices or delay a particular configuration without creating a universal stockout. TrendForce’s September outlook indicates that CPU availability improved from the second quarter, while memory remained costly; Gartner’s separate forecasts point to higher PC prices and lower global shipments under its assumptions.
Make the decision from a live, exact listing: match the specifications to your workload, calculate the delivered price, verify stock and delivery, and inspect warranty and returns. Buy when the machine solves a real need at acceptable terms; wait only when your current laptop works and you can tolerate uncertainty.
