If the August 2026 Windows Server 2025 update KB5120233 fails with “One or more errors occurred while processing the request,” that message alone does not identify the cause—and the available evidence does not show that ESXi caused it. First confirm the full error code and examine the guest’s servicing logs. Microsoft identifies KB5120233 as the August 11, 2026 cumulative update for Windows Server 2025, build 26100.33296.
What the message does—and does not—tell you
The quoted wording is generic. Microsoft’s error-code reference uses “One or more errors occurred while processing the request” for ERROR_ERRORS_ENCOUNTERED, error 774 (0x306). But the report does not include a numeric code, so do not assume that this is the code your VM returned. Confirm it in the guest’s update history or logs before using that mapping.
Even when the code is 774 / 0x306, it describes an error condition rather than naming a failed Windows component or a repair. A Microsoft Q&A response used the same mapping in an example involving a different update and OS build; that example does not diagnose KB5120233.

Microsoft lists KB5120233 as the August 11, 2026 cumulative update for Windows Server 2025, all editions, resulting in OS build 26100.33296. It includes that month’s security fixes and quality improvements, along with non-security changes from the prior month’s optional preview. Microsoft’s container-image listing also associates KB5120233 with version 10.0.26100.33296 and servicing stack update version 10.0.26100.33288; those container details confirm the release identity but are not VM troubleshooting instructions.

Record whether the failure occurs through Windows Update, WSUS, a manually downloaded MSU, or an offline image. The installation route matters: a package applicability problem, a servicing failure, and a patch-management synchronization problem are not interchangeable diagnoses.
Check the guest before changing the VM
- Capture the exact failure. Note the complete error text and numeric code, the time of failure, the installation method, the update-history entry, and the guest’s current OS build. Do not rely on the short message alone.
- Review servicing evidence around that time. Check Windows Update history, the guest’s Windows Update and Component-Based Servicing (CBS) logs, and relevant event records. Look for a more specific underlying code, package applicability issue, missing component, pending operation, or corruption indicator. These are diagnostic checks, not claims that any particular condition is present.
- Compare the package with Microsoft’s guidance. Confirm the target is Windows Server 2025 and that the package is KB5120233. For installing individual MSU files, Microsoft’s article lists KB5043080 before KB5120233. Follow that order only when it applies to your image and deployment channel; it is not a guaranteed fix for this error.
- Investigate ESXi only when the evidence points there. The VM runs on ESXi, but the cited sources do not establish a causal link between ESXi, VMware Tools, virtual hardware version, and this update failure. Use the guest logs to decide whether comparing host or VM details is warranted rather than changing virtualization settings speculatively.
Check the known-issue list without overreading it
Microsoft’s KB5120233 article lists a WSUS issue: after KB5070881 or later, WSUS does not display synchronization error details. It does not list the quoted installation message as a known issue. That omission does not prove there is no other issue; it means the published known-issue entry does not explain this VM’s failure.

When to escalate
If the servicing evidence does not reveal a safe, specific resolution, provide Microsoft or VMware support with the package and guest build, complete numeric error code, relevant log excerpts around the failure, installation route, and the VM and host versions. Preserve the logs before retrying or making changes so the failure context remains available.
