If you mean the pop-up that appears when an AirTag is brought close to an iPhone, the hint is an AirTag setup animation—not a universal Bluetooth-accessory prompt. Hold the AirTag near the iPhone or iPad and tap Connect. When the animation is missing or disappeared, check software compatibility, Bluetooth, Location Services, Apple Account and iCloud setup, Find My network, and Wi-Fi or cellular service. Other accessories use different setup routes.
First identify which “nearby accessory” hint you expected
Apple does not show one standard setup card for every nearby Bluetooth product. The documented proximity animation is for AirTag. A compatible third-party Find My network accessory is normally connected according to its manufacturer’s instructions and then added manually in Find My. AirPods use their own pairing and Find My enrollment flow. Home accessories can be discovered through the Home app, but a single accessory manual does not establish a universal Apple prompt.
If you are unsure, note the accessory model and the app in which you expected the message. That distinction determines which troubleshooting path applies.

Set up an AirTag when the animation is available
- Make sure the iPhone or iPad is unlocked and nearby.
- Bring only one AirTag close to the device. Keeping several unconfigured AirTags in range can prevent you from getting the expected single-item flow.
- Follow Apple’s instruction: “Hold your AirTag near your iPhone or iPad, then tap Connect.”
- Choose a name for the AirTag, associate it with your Apple Account, and finish the on-screen steps.
Apple published this procedure on September 14, 2026. The minimum operating system is iOS or iPadOS 14.5 for the original AirTag. Apple says AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later, so an older device release can block setup even when the hardware is close enough.
What to check when the AirTag hint does not appear
1. Update the iPhone or iPad
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install an available release that meets the requirement for your AirTag generation. Restart after updating if the setup card still does not appear. An AirTag 2 requires the newer 26.2.1-or-later baseline specified by Apple; do not treat the original AirTag’s 14.5 requirement as sufficient for that model.
2. Confirm Bluetooth and Location Services
In Settings > Bluetooth, make sure Bluetooth is enabled. Then open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and turn Location Services on. These are separate controls: an iPhone can have one enabled while the other is disabled, preventing the proximity setup from completing.
3. Complete Apple Account and iCloud prerequisites
AirTag setup depends on more than radio range. Check that the iPhone has completed Apple Account setup, iCloud Keychain is enabled, and the Find My network is on. If iCloud data synchronization is paused or an account-settings alert is waiting, complete that prompt before trying again. Apple lists these account and Find My conditions as part of the AirTag setup checks.

4. Restore a reliable network connection
Connect to a strong Wi-Fi network or verify cellular data. A weak or unavailable connection can interrupt account registration and Find My enrollment even if the AirTag is detected locally. If the connection looks normal but the card remains absent, restart the iPhone or iPad and try again.
5. Retry a disappeared animation correctly
If the setup animation appeared and then vanished, Apple’s retry sequence is specific:
- Put the iPhone or iPad to sleep with the side button (or Sleep/Wake button on an applicable iPad).
- Wake it and unlock it.
- Wait 15 seconds with the AirTag nearby.
Do not move several AirTags into range during this retry. Bring one item close, complete or cancel its setup, and only then start another.
6. Inspect the AirTag itself
Check that the AirTag’s battery is installed correctly and has charge. If setup still fails, use Apple’s AirTag reset instructions linked from its support guidance, then repeat the single-item setup attempt. Resetting is a later step; it does not replace the software, account and connectivity checks above.

Check whether Find My has reached its item limit
Apple says Find My supports up to 32 items, counting shared items and accessories. AirPods also count under Apple’s model-specific counting rules. When the account has reached that limit, a new AirTag or other item cannot be added, so the missing result may look like a proximity problem even though detection is working.
Review existing entries in Find My > Items and remove an item you no longer use before trying to add another. Because AirPods can contribute to the total, count those entries as well rather than counting only visible AirTags.
When the accessory is a third-party Find My item
Do not wait indefinitely for an AirTag-style animation. Apple’s documented route is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Open Find My and select Items.
- Tap Add, then choose Other Item.
- Complete the identification and account steps shown by Find My.
The accessory must be compatible with the Find My network. A generic Bluetooth tracker that is not supported by Find My will not become an item through this menu, and the AirTag animation procedure does not make it compatible.

The locator's slim, durable design makes it the perfect companion for wallets, keys, backpacks, suitcases, luggage and laptop bags
AirPods use a separate incomplete-setup workflow
For AirPods, a missing or partial pairing card is not evidence that the AirTag process is broken. Apple’s incomplete-setup guidance recommends waiting a few minutes first, because enrollment can finish after the initial pairing.
AirPods checks
- Update iOS or iPadOS.
- Verify the device passcode and required Apple Account security setup.
- Complete any alert in Settings requesting account changes.
- Enable iCloud Keychain and Find My.
- In Bluetooth settings, confirm Bluetooth is on and that the AirPods’ Find My network option is enabled where available.
- Close the AirPods case, wait briefly, and open it again near the unlocked iPhone.
If the AirPods appear partially configured, Apple advises removing them from Find My and reconnecting them. Use the full procedure in Apple’s incomplete AirPods setup support page rather than trying to force the AirTag animation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the difference between Control Centre and Settings
On current iPhone software, tapping the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth controls in Control Centre does not necessarily turn those radios completely off. Apple says those controls disconnect accessories while leaving some wireless services available. To switch Wi-Fi or Bluetooth fully off, open Settings > Wi-Fi or Settings > Bluetooth and use the setting there.
This distinction is useful while diagnosing a missing prompt: check the actual Settings switches rather than assuming a Control Centre tap changed the radio state. It does not, by itself, explain every missing setup card. Apple’s explanation is available at Use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in Control Centre.

Home accessories and app-mediated discovery
A Home-compatible product may be discovered from the Home app instead of through Find My. One soundbar manual, for example, demonstrates a nearby add flow, but that single manufacturer document cannot be generalized to every Home accessory or used as Apple-wide troubleshooting guidance. Start with the product’s documented Home setup path and verify that the iPhone is signed in to the intended Apple Account.
Apple’s NINearbyAccessoryConfiguration documentation describes interaction mediated by an app. It should not be interpreted as proof that iOS displays a system-wide hint whenever any nearby accessory is detected.
Decision checklist before contacting support
- AirTag: Confirm the generation, required iOS/iPadOS version, Bluetooth, Location Services, Apple Account, iCloud Keychain, Find My network and network connection.
- Animation disappeared: Sleep the iPhone, wake and unlock it, then wait 15 seconds with only one AirTag nearby.
- Several AirTags: Separate them and configure one at a time.
- New item rejected: Check the Find My total of up to 32 items, including shared items and applicable AirPods counts.
- Third-party Find My accessory: Use the manufacturer’s pairing instructions, then Find My > Items > Add > Other Item.
- AirPods: Follow the incomplete-setup workflow, including account security, iCloud Keychain, Find My and case-close/reopen steps.
- Home accessory: Use the Home app and the product’s own instructions; do not expect the AirTag card.
- Still unresolved: Record the accessory model, iPhone model, iOS/iPadOS version, the app involved and any exact alert text. Those details identify whether the problem is compatibility, account enrollment, item limits or hardware.
Bottom line
The nearby hint is not a general iPhone feature for every Bluetooth accessory. Treat it as an AirTag setup animation unless the accessory’s documentation says otherwise. For an AirTag, update the operating system, enable the required wireless, location, account and Find My services, retry the 15-second wake-and-unlock sequence with one AirTag, and check the 32-item Find My limit. Route compatible third-party items through manual Find My addition, and use Apple’s separate pairing guidance for AirPods.
