Windows 11 can send sound to a monitor when the monitor’s HDMI or DisplayPort audio device is selected as the playback output. To restore sound to your speakers or headset, check Settings > System > Sound > Output and select the device you want. If only one app switches, change that app’s output in Volume mixer instead.
Why does Windows 11 sound keep switching to the monitor?
Windows may have several playback devices available, including audio devices exposed by a monitor connected over HDMI or DisplayPort. If the monitor’s device is selected as the system output, Windows sends sound there. This is a possible explanation, not a universal trigger: check which output is selected on your PC before assuming what caused the change.
Microsoft advises that if an external monitor does not have built-in speakers, it should not be selected as the default output device. Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide explains how to choose an output and check device settings.

How do I stop Windows 11 from switching audio output to my monitor?
Choose the intended output in Settings
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select your preferred speakers, headphones, or headset.
Microsoft says selecting an output there also sets it as the default. If you want to set the default through the classic sound panel, open More sound settings > Playback, select the preferred device, and choose Set as default.

Check mute and device status
Confirm the selected device is not muted and that the desired playback device is enabled. Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting steps include checking device properties and enabling a device that is disabled.
Why does sound switch to the monitor only in one app?
Individual apps can use an output different from the Windows system default. If system sounds play through the right speakers but one app plays through the monitor, inspect that app’s routing in Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. What if the speakers or headset are missing from Output?
If the device you want does not appear in Sound settings, check whether Windows detects or has disabled it before treating this as an output-selection problem.
- Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the audio device appears but is disabled, enable it.
- If it is absent or still does not work, obtain the current audio driver for your Windows version from your PC or sound-card manufacturer.

What else can I try if the output keeps changing?
If selecting the right device and checking app routing do not resolve the issue, run the Windows audio troubleshooter. Microsoft also lists turning off audio enhancements as a troubleshooting step. These are diagnostic options, not guaranteed fixes for every output-switching problem; use the steps in Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guide.
