If Waze shows “No GPS,” gives no sound, cannot calculate a route, or fails only on your car screen, the right fix depends on where the problem starts. Work through the seven symptoms below, testing Waze on the phone by itself when needed to distinguish an app or phone issue from a car-display issue.
1. “No GPS” or Waze shows the wrong location
Start by checking whether Waze can access the phone’s location, then restart the phone. If the warning remains, test the phone’s GPS outdoors with a GPS-status utility. Waze’s GPS help uses the test reading to point you to the next step: 0 m/0 ft or more than 35 m/115 ft means the phone’s GPS is not working properly, so contact the phone manufacturer. A reading under 35 m/115 ft indicates GPS is working; if Waze still reports an error, contact Waze.
For Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, disconnect the phone and open Waze directly on it. If the phone also reports a GPS problem, troubleshoot the phone and Waze. If Waze works on the phone but not on the car display, investigate the car system or contact Waze support. For Android Automotive, allow the car’s location access; the setting path varies by vehicle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf GPS loss happens repeatedly, check whether other GPS apps have the same problem. If only Waze is affected, restarting or reinstalling it may help. Phone placement and the view of the sky can also matter; a windshield or dashboard mount is one optional way to position the phone, not a fix for faulty GPS hardware. The community-maintained Waze GPS FAQ discusses these checks.

2. Waze directions or alerts are silent or use the wrong speaker
Check Waze’s sound mode first. Normal includes spoken guidance and alerts; Less chatty limits spoken guidance; Only alerts suppresses spoken turn directions; Off mutes Waze. Then raise Guidance volume under Voice and sound. Menu names and locations can vary by app version and platform.
For Android Auto or CarPlay, adjust Waze’s sound preferences on the phone; they apply in the car. The car interface also has its own in-drive sound controls. If Bluetooth is connected and you want directions through that device, Waze’s Android guidance says to turn off “Play sound to phone speaker.” Check both the phone and car audio routing if sound still does not come through.
If the settings and output route look right, try Waze’s documented voice-cache and voice-reset steps in its sound troubleshooting guide. If the problem continues, report it through Waze Help.
3. Waze cannot calculate a route or says there is no network connection
Check that mobile data or Wi-Fi is connected and actually usable. Waze requires an active data connection to find and navigate a route. Intermittent service can also make traffic alerts and hazard reporting unreliable; see Waze’s connectivity guidance.

Weak cellular coverage or slow data may trigger network errors. The community-maintained FAQ also suggests checking whether “Avoid toll roads” is enabled when route-server errors occur, since the setting may affect available route choices in some areas. Treat that as a troubleshooting lead, not a universal cause. If service is strong and the error persists, restart the phone; reinstalling Waze is a further step suggested by the community FAQ.
4. Waze sends you to the wrong place or the map is wrong
First determine whether the destination pin is misplaced or the pin is right but the route uses a bad or unsuitable road. Those are different problems: a wrong place or address needs a correction to the place data, while a missing, misdrawn, or incorrectly connected road calls for a map correction.
GPS positioning and map information are separate. GPS establishes the device’s position; it does not supply the roads or addresses shown on the map. GPS.gov explains this distinction and notes that map corrections can take weeks or months to be reviewed and issued. Waze’s community FAQ says address and point-of-interest coordinates may come from third-party providers, which vary by country and search result. Report the bad address or place to the provider responsible for that data, or report an error in Waze’s road map when the road itself is wrong. GPS.gov’s explanation is at GPS.gov: GPS and maps.
5. Waze works on the phone but fails on Android Auto or CarPlay
Disconnect the phone from the car and reproduce the issue in Waze on the phone. If the problem remains, follow the relevant phone-side steps above. If Waze works on the phone and fails only in the car, focus on the projection connection, car console, or head unit rather than changing unrelated phone settings.

When you contact Waze, say that the issue occurs only on the in-car system and identify whether you use Android Auto, CarPlay, or another system. Waze also instructs users to disconnect Android Auto or CarPlay before using its in-app help workflow.

Waze is designed to use an active data connection. Without internet, Waze says it cannot locate or navigate a route. With intermittent connectivity, live traffic and hazard information may be unreliable. Do not rely on Waze to provide offline turn-by-turn navigation or to queue hazard or map reports for later submission.
7. First-line fixes did not work: contact Waze
Submit a report from Waze on the phone:
- Open Menu > Help and feedback > Report an issue. Menu wording may differ by platform or app version.
- Select the topic and subtopic that match the problem.
- Describe what happens and attach screenshots if available. If the issue occurs in a car, identify the in-car system and say whether Waze works on the disconnected phone.
If the common solutions do not resolve the issue, use the support-ticket option in Waze Help. See Waze’s instructions for reporting an issue.
Check whether your device is supported
Waze’s availability page listed iOS 16 or later and Android 10 or later when checked, and said the device needs GPS and GSM/3G/4G/5G connectivity. Requirements can change; verify the current list on Waze’s availability page before relying on an older device.
