When a soundbar is silent, the cause is usually a wrong input, muted or misrouted TV audio, an incorrectly connected ARC/eARC or optical cable, or a Bluetooth pairing conflict—not a failed speaker. Work from the TV and soundbar controls outward: confirm playback and volume, select the matching input and TV output, verify the correct ports, then reseat or replace the cable and cross-test with another source. Menu names differ by model, region and software version, so treat the paths below as model-specific examples rather than universal labels.
Start with the checks that take a minute
- Confirm that something is playing. Start a program or video with known audio. If the source device is paused, disconnected or itself muted, the soundbar cannot produce sound.
- Check both volume controls. Clear mute on the TV, soundbar and source device, then raise the soundbar volume. Some remotes show a volume change even when the bar is muted.
- Match the soundbar input to the cable. Choose HDMI ARC/eARC for an ARC/eARC connection, optical for a TOSLINK connection, or Bluetooth for a wireless connection. A bar can be powered and connected while listening to the wrong input.
- Choose the external audio output on the TV. If the TV is still set to its internal speakers, the bar will remain silent even though a cable is plugged in.
- Inspect the connection at both ends. Check that the plug is fully inserted and that the cable is in the labeled audio port, not a nearby ordinary HDMI socket.
These basic checks are the first steps recommended in Samsung’s soundbar troubleshooting guide and LG’s soundbar support guide.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
A few observations can prevent you from changing several settings at once. If the TV speakers work but the soundbar is silent, the TV may still be routing sound internally, or the bar may be on the wrong source. If the bar display remains on a general input such as D.IN instead of changing to TV ARC, concentrate on the HDMI ports, CEC setting and cable before investigating the speakers. If the TV does not list a Bluetooth bar at all, pairing mode or an unwanted connection to a nearby phone is more likely than a failed audio amplifier.
Write down what each device displays before restarting. The exact labels vary, but the pattern is useful when you contact support: TV speakers versus external output, ARC/eARC versus another bar input, and a Bluetooth device listed versus absent. Changing one item at a time also makes it easier to tell which step restored sound.

Identify the connection before changing settings
Look at the cable and the labels on the TV and soundbar. The correct fix depends on whether the audio travels over HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, or Bluetooth. Use this table to avoid applying an HDMI setting to an optical or wireless setup.
| Connection | Required hardware | TV setting | Soundbar setting | Common failure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | TV ARC/eARC port, soundbar ARC/eARC port and a compatible HDMI cable | External speaker or HDMI ARC/eARC output; HDMI-CEC may need to be enabled | ARC/eARC or the model’s matching HDMI input | Cable in a regular HDMI port, CEC disabled, or incompatible endpoint |
| Optical | TV optical/digital-audio output, soundbar optical input and an optical cable | Optical/digital audio output | Optical | Connector not fully seated, wrong orientation or wrong input selected |
| Bluetooth | TV and soundbar with compatible Bluetooth audio support | Paired soundbar selected in the Bluetooth audio list | Bluetooth pairing mode | Bar has reconnected to a nearby phone or tablet, or is not in pairing mode |
No connection is universally best for every television and soundbar. Both endpoints must support the same method, the required ports must be available, and both menus must offer the corresponding output and input. Sony’s ARC/eARC guidance identifies optical or another supported audio cable as the fallback when ARC/eARC compatibility is missing.
Fix HDMI ARC or eARC audio
1. Use the ports labeled ARC or eARC
Connect the cable from the television’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s correspondingly labeled port. A regular HDMI input can carry video into a device but does not provide the television-to-soundbar return-audio function. LG states: “To send audio from the TV to the soundbar through an HDMI cable, you must use an HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC port.” This wording appears in LG USA Support’s external-device FAQ, dated August 18, 2026 (LG support).
2. Turn on HDMI-CEC when the setup requires it
ARC handshaking commonly depends on HDMI-CEC, the control feature that lets the TV and bar detect and control one another. Manufacturers use different names: Samsung calls it Anynet+; LG calls it SIMPLINK. Enable the relevant CEC option in the TV’s HDMI or general-connection settings, then restart both devices. Do not assume that a setting called CEC on one product has the same menu location on another.
3. Select the TV’s external sound output
Open the TV’s sound-output menu and choose the HDMI ARC/eARC device or external speaker rather than internal TV speakers. On LG webOS, the general path is Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Out; LG warns that the exact menu varies by model and software version (LG external-device instructions). If your menu uses different wording, look for an external, receiver, HDMI ARC or audio-out choice instead of repeatedly selecting the built-in speakers.
4. Select the bar’s ARC input
Change the soundbar source to its ARC/eARC mode. In Samsung’s documented sequence, selecting D.IN starts the digital/ARC flow and the display should change to TV ARC when the return channel succeeds (Samsung support). Other models may show HDMI ARC, eARC or TV Audio instead. A display that never changes is a useful clue that the return connection has not been negotiated.

5. Re-establish the handshake
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends and reconnect it firmly to the two ARC/eARC ports.
- Power the soundbar and TV back on, then reselect the external audio output and ARC input.
- If the bar still does not switch from its idle or D.IN state to TV ARC, test a known-good HDMI cable. Samsung specifically recommends trying another cable when the source does not transition.
If either endpoint lacks ARC/eARC support, an ARC setting cannot create that capability. Use optical or another audio connection supported by both products instead, as described by Sony. Check the specifications for both model numbers rather than relying on the fact that each product has an HDMI socket.

Fix optical (TOSLINK) audio
- Connect the TV’s port labeled Optical, Digital Audio Out or similar to the soundbar’s Optical In. Do not connect the cable to an optical output on the bar.
- Remove any protective caps, align the square connector with the socket and push it straight in until it is fully seated. Optical plugs only fit one way; forcing an angled plug can leave the connection incomplete.
- Set the TV’s sound output to optical/digital audio and change the soundbar source to Optical.
- Play audio and raise the volume on the bar. If the TV offers a digital-audio format choice and one format produces silence, consult both devices’ manuals for a mutually supported setting.
Optical is a practical fallback when ARC/eARC is unavailable, but both devices must have the necessary optical ports. LG’s external-device instructions cover connector seating and output selection; Sony also lists optical as an alternative when ARC/eARC compatibility is absent (LG; Sony).
Fix Bluetooth soundbar audio
Put the bar in pairing mode
Use the soundbar’s Bluetooth or pairing control until its indicator shows that it is discoverable. On the TV, open the Bluetooth audio-device list, select the soundbar and confirm the connection. The exact webOS and TV menu path differs across software generations, so follow the model’s on-screen labels.
Prevent an unwanted reconnection
If the bar does not appear, temporarily switch off Bluetooth on nearby phones and tablets or move them away. A soundbar can automatically reconnect to a device it paired with previously, making it unavailable to the TV. Put it back into pairing mode after disconnecting that device.
Verify the active output
After pairing, choose the soundbar as the TV’s active audio output rather than leaving internal speakers selected. If the TV reports a connection but no sound, disconnect and pair again, then check the bar’s source indicator. A remembered pairing is not necessarily the same as an active audio route.

Power-cycle and reseat the system
A fresh startup can clear a failed HDMI or Bluetooth handshake. Turn off the TV, soundbar and source device, unplug them briefly, then reconnect power. With the devices off, unplug and reseat the HDMI or optical cable; LG recommends reconnecting the cable before turning both devices back on (LG soundbar guide). Recheck the selected output and input after startup because some models revert to their last non-TV source.
Power-cycling is a reset of the connection, not proof that a component is defective. If sound returns only after every restart, note that behavior and tell support which device was powered first, what the displays showed and whether the issue returns after changing sources.
Isolate the failed part instead of buying accessories blindly
Test another source through the soundbar
Connect or select a different known-working audio source that the soundbar supports. If that source plays, the bar’s speakers and amplifier are functioning; focus on the original TV, source device, TV setting or cable. If no source plays, the soundbar or its power and input circuitry is more likely at fault.
Test ARC with another compatible TV
When HDMI ARC is the suspected path, test the soundbar on another TV that explicitly supports ARC/eARC. A successful second-TV test points back to the original television, its CEC setting, its port or the original cable. Failure on the test TV as well suggests a soundbar, cable or compatibility problem. Samsung recommends this type of cross-test in its troubleshooting flow (Samsung support).
Interpret the result
| Test result | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Another source plays through the bar | Investigate the original TV/source output, selected input or connection. |
| No source plays through the bar | Check power and input once more, then contact the soundbar manufacturer or arrange service. |
| ARC works on another compatible TV | Investigate the original TV’s ARC port, CEC setting, software or cable. |
| ARC fails on multiple compatible TVs | Suspect the bar, cable or an incompatibility and seek manufacturer support. |
Cross-testing is more informative than repeatedly purchasing cables. Use a replacement HDMI cable only after confirming that both endpoints support ARC/eARC, the ports are correct, the cable is seated and the settings are right. An optical cable is a diagnostic or fallback option only when both products provide optical connections; the support pages do not establish a particular cable brand, length, certification or price. In other words, there is no evidence-based reason to pay more for a named cable before the compatibility and routing checks are complete.
When the problem is compatibility, not a defect
- ARC/eARC mismatch: If either endpoint does not support the required return-audio standard, use a supported optical or other connection.
- Port mismatch: A television may have several HDMI sockets but only one ARC/eARC socket. The same restriction can apply to the soundbar.
- CEC naming: Anynet+, SIMPLINK and other names refer to manufacturer-specific implementations; instructions for one brand may not match another.
- Software and region differences: Menu wording and locations can change by model, region and firmware. Use the television and soundbar manuals when the example paths do not appear.
Do not infer a hardware failure solely because a cable is connected or a TV detects a device. Audio still depends on supported standards, selected outputs and successful device negotiation. Cross-brand combinations can also expose control or ARC behavior that differs from a same-brand setup, so record the exact models when requesting help.

When to contact support
Contact the soundbar manufacturer or an authorized technician after you have confirmed power, volume, playback, matching input and output, correct labeled ports, a firmly seated cable or a fresh Bluetooth pairing, and the bar still fails with more than one compatible source. Include the TV and soundbar model numbers, connection type, port labels, what each display or indicator shows, and the results of your cross-tests. That information lets support distinguish a TV-setting problem from a cable, compatibility or hardware fault.

Why is there no sound from my external device?
First verify that the TV and soundbar are on, neither is muted, a source is actually playing, and the bar is set to the input used by the cable or wireless connection. Then choose the soundbar or corresponding external output in the TV’s sound menu. If the connection is HDMI, confirm that both ends use ports labeled ARC or eARC.
I connected my soundbar with an HDMI cable, but there’s still no audio. What should I do?
Check that the cable runs between the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port; an ordinary HDMI socket will not provide return audio. Enable the required HDMI-CEC feature (Anynet+ on Samsung or SIMPLINK on LG), select the external TV output, and choose the bar’s ARC input. Samsung’s sequence uses D.IN and should change to TV ARC when the link succeeds.
Can any HDMI port send TV sound to a soundbar?
No. The television and soundbar must have compatible ARC/eARC support, and the cable must be connected to the specifically labeled ARC or eARC ports. A regular HDMI input may accept video but does not perform the television-to-soundbar return-audio function.

Why does my soundbar show D.IN but remain silent?
On Samsung’s documented flow, D.IN is the starting source and the display should change to TV ARC after a successful return-channel connection. If it does not, verify the two labeled ARC/eARC ports, HDMI-CEC, the TV’s external output selection and cable seating. A known-good HDMI cable or a test with another compatible TV can help isolate the fault.
Why is my optical cable connected but there is still no sound?
Confirm that the cable runs from the TV’s optical or digital-audio output to the soundbar’s optical input. Remove protective caps, align and fully seat both connectors, select optical output on the TV and Optical on the bar, then test with audio playing and the bar volume raised.
Why cannot my TV find my Bluetooth soundbar?
Put the soundbar into Bluetooth pairing mode and open the TV’s Bluetooth audio-device list. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones and tablets because the bar may have automatically reconnected to one of them. After pairing, select the soundbar as the active TV output.

Play a different known-working source through the bar. If it works, investigate the original TV, source, output setting or cable. For ARC, test the bar on another compatible TV. Success on the second TV points to the original TV or its connection; failure on multiple compatible setups warrants manufacturer support.
Should I buy a new HDMI cable immediately?
Not immediately. First confirm ARC/eARC compatibility, the labeled ports, CEC and output/input selections, and firm cable seating. If the bar still does not transition to TV ARC, Samsung recommends trying another cable. The support guidance does not establish a required brand, length, certification or price.
Do TV sound menus use the same names on every model?
No. LG gives Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Out as a general webOS path but warns that menus vary by model and software version. Samsung, Sony and other brands use different labels and locations. Use the model’s manual when the example path is absent.
When should I stop troubleshooting and contact support?
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized technician after checking power, playback, mute, matching input and output, correct ports, cable seating or fresh Bluetooth pairing, and testing more than one compatible source. Provide model numbers, connection type, port labels, display messages and cross-test results.
The Bottom Line
Start with power, playback, mute, volume and the selected input. Then route the TV to the external soundbar, use the correctly labeled ARC/eARC ports with HDMI-CEC when required, or match optical and Bluetooth settings to their connections. Reseat cables and power-cycle before trying a replacement. A second source or compatible TV is the fastest way to separate a TV-setting problem from a cable, compatibility or soundbar fault.
